-Can be Diurnal or Nocturnal
-Wings are used for attracting mates
-Cannot fly
-Males have smaller wings than females
-Have a strip of fluff that runs from their neck, down the spine, to their tails
-Have small claws on their feet to help them climb
-Fur is surprisingly thin, but insulates well in cold weather
-Live in cold rocky places. Ex: Mountains
-When fighting for a mate, males assert their dominance through a battle of wills. To others, it seems like a staring contest, but what is actually taking place is they are sending out frequencies that only other male Dalirs can hear, that are painful to the ones on the receiving end. The first to look away must step down.
-Females CAN reject the male, even if he wins the battle of wills.
-Penises are dual colors, using colors from the markings, or eyes
-Can have same sex mates, but can only reproduce via male-female intercourse, with the female becoming pregnant.
Culture:
Matriarchal society. Males are treated well by the females, and are actually fairly equal, but females hold more power and sway than males do, and are governed by a matriarch.
They hunt and scavenge, traveling into areas just off their mountains to get what food and supplies they cannot get on the mountain. Dalir are omnivores, but have a heavy preference for meat. Dalir favor bow and arrow for hunting, and hammers for combat.
Polytheistic, primarily worshipping a Goddess of the Hunt, whom they believe created the world by hunting the darkness until there was space for life to form.
Live in packs in their own territories. Rarely have issues with other Dalir packs, and in fact prefer to be on good terms so that trading is possible. There can be up to 5 Dalir packs on one mountain. More if it's a whole mountain range.
There are Tundra Dalir which are even fluffier, and can be on the plump side, due to a diet that can consist of blubber. Tundra Dalir believe that they are near the edge of the world, on the border of the spirit world, and unlike their mountain brethren, are nomads, as they are trying to discover that border. Tundra Dalir came to be centuries past when a handful of Dalir decided they wanted to find the spirit world to be closer to their Goddess, and began exploring the world, and eventually ended up in the Tundra. They believe this means they are near the spirit world due to the harsh conditions- a deterrent to keep anything that did not belong, out before its time. In short, Tundra Dalir are highly spiritual.
When a male is wanting to attract a female, his wings play a huge part. Pheremones release from glands in the wings, and males, while their wings are smaller, tend to be a lot prettier than female wings. Though most of the old customs for attracting a mate have been dropped over the years, some males will still perform dances that showcase their wings, and that will fan pheremones in their desired mate's direction. A still common tradition is Na Imur, a challenge of endurance.
Most packs have a Soothsayer or Oracle, but not all. For this reason, there are exceptions to the nomad rule, aside from Tundra Dalir, being a wandering Soothsayer/Oracle. They travel all over and through the mountains, visiting packs, and assisting the ones without their own Oracle or Soothsayer. They cannot remain with any one pack however. There are very few wandering Oracles/Soothsayers, and usually once they are chosen for that path, they are never seen by their pack again.
Pack Roles:
Scavenger- scavenges materials and food that can't be gotten by regular hunting or gathering. Might sneak into people's food stores if their pack is desperate for food/supplies.
Hunter- Hunts/fishes wild game so the pack has meat to eat. Double as the βsoldiersβ.
Gatherers- Gathers herbs, berries and other non-meat foods and materials that can be used. A job often done by children and the parent rearing the child.
Bowyers/Hammersmiths- Makes/repairs the bows, arrows, hammers and other favored weapons of the pack
Craftsmen- any other skill or craft that is useful to the pack, like sewing, tanning, skinning, carpentry, etc. Usually raised into their trade by their family, and may have multiple trades, especially if the pack is small.
Healers- has skill in healing and medicine. Might be able to heal using βaurasβ (Very rare).
Oracle/Soothsayer- Conducts the religious ceremonies of the pack, is consulted on important matters that will effect the whole tribe, and often on matters of justice. Is 2nd in command to the Chieftess. Are born into their role, which is discovered when they are a child, and then they are taken in under their predecessor to learn their duties.
Chieftess- The head of the pack. Makes all the important pack decisions, and is the LAW of the pack. Chieftesses are elected. They are the ones who conduct business with other packs.
Breeders: UNCOMMON. But not unheard of. More common among Tundra Dalir.
Many Dalir inhabit multiple roles within their pack, as packs vary in size, some being very small. Their Oracle may be a healer. Their bowyer may also be a scavenger. Their hunter may also be a seamstress and tanner. The possibilities are endless.
Some information will be updated as time goes on.
