Totem Paws on the move in the FHL Season 3 Veteran Draft
Posted 12 years agoContinuing
Victoria welcome back the Didjeri Roo, F Brodie Hampton (26G, 30A in 46 games), for a second season with the Totem Paws. As our first pick (1st round, 12th overall) in the veteran draft, he'll be continue to be a regular on the squad, along with our "draft protected" mainstays D
Ricky Thicke, G
PichuPal, C
Coutzy and F
Paskhowl.
Additions
With the Totem Paws second pick (3rd round, 40th overall), we selected versatile F/D Sable Manumala (7G, 16A in 17 games with Jacksonville last season). Manumala's balanced and well-rounded game should help steady Victoria.
After being redrafted by Victoria with their third pick (3rd round, 42nd overall), F Nathan Tamurello (13G, 14A in 24 games) has been traded to Helena for D Antero Ansikorpi (11G, 23A in 31 games last season) and an exchange of 3rd round rookie draft picks (VCT getting 38th, HVG receiving 46th).
Ansikorpi had been drafted by Helena in the third round, 35th overall, before making a transfer request after the draft. Victoria have long valued the offensive exploits of the big Finnish defender, singling him out as "one to watch" (see http://www.furaffinity.net/journals.....s/#jid:3013184) after he was selected as the #2 overall pick in the first ever FHL draft. Ansikorpi even made it a condition of the trade that he keep his #10 on his jersey, a request which Victoria happily obliged. The stadium announcers at the Victoria WigWam will surely be calling it out this season!
Another lion joins the Totems ranks in F/C Simba Sefu, Victoria's fourth pick (4th round, 53rd overall) of the veteran draft. A former FHL runner-up with Portland in season 1, Sefu's 3 goals and 5 assists from 25 games last season for Houston were a steep drop from his first season stats. Sefu's experience and faceoff specialty will be important for the Totem Paws as the league introduces more secondary line playing time this season.
Having gambled - and lost - that G Fin Aurelius would fall to free agency, Victoria fought hard to secure the signature of free agent G
Jonathan Sparks (9W, 18L in 31 games) to backup Lord Pichupal. By the time Colorado Springs had made their run for the cup in FHL season 1, Sparks had beat out Rowan DeKatherine for the starting job, posting 11 wins, 7 losses and a shutout and continued to lead the Pioneers in net in season 2.
Departures
The organisation would like to thank some of our big contributors, G
Fin Aurelius and C
Rain (19G, 23A in 43 games), who have been with us since the Victoria franchise started two seasons ago. Rain was drafted by Bridgeport and Fin by the St. Louis Spirits. Alfonz Jakopin (14G, 17A, 5PPG in 36 games) will be taking his powerplay heroics to Baltimore after being snapped up in the second round of the draft. Good luck next year fellas, and thanks for not giving us any divisional headaches!
Manny LeLis (13G, 22A in 29 games) announced his retirement after enforcing the blueline for the Totem Paws last year.

Totem Paws roll on, move to 4-0
Posted 13 years agoVictoria has maintained their perfect start to the season with wins over Lexington and Houston.
Coutzy scored a double, Brodie Hampton scored in his first start in the red and white, and Paskhowl scored three points, including a third period tally. Ricky Thicke also featured on the scoresheet, with Victoria's first, to square the game after the Stallions scored first via the dangerous Jacques St. Francois. Victoria never trailed after that point, cruising to a 5-2 victory.

Fin Aurelius shone in his first game of the season, saving 36 shots on the way to a 3-1 win over the Houston Cosmonauts. Coutzy continued his scoring streak with a goal and an assist, complemented by Ricky Thicke and Brodie Hampton's contributions.

Victoria face a stern challenge next, against the Western Conference leading Salt Lake City Killer Bees (4-0-1), before a home-and-home against the surprisingly winless Colorado Springs Pioneers.

Victoria chalk up two Ws to start season 2
Posted 13 years agoThe Totem Paws kicked off their season in style, earning victories over Colorado Springs and Seattle and sitting atop the Northwest Division.
Victoria defeated the Colorado Springs Pioneers, last season's Western Conference top seed, in a tight 3-2 tussle. Goals from rookie Coutzy and captain Paskhowl got the ball rolling and the Totems led 2-0 at the second interval. After the Pioneers squared it at 2-2, a game winning shorthanded goal from new acquisition Manny LeLis, plus a strong showing in net from PichuPal (39 saves from 41 shots), ensured Victoria held on to open the season on a high note.
Two days later, Victoria played the first game in new franchise Seattle's home, the DC Watchtower, earning a 4-2 win. Ricky Thicke's goal, assist and 4/4 PK effort featured him in the FHL's three stars of the round. Rain and Coutzy also featured amongst the goal scorers, as well as Alfonz Jakopin's power play effort that turned out to be the game winner.
Stay tuned for Victoria's first home game of the season against Lexington Stallions on August 22nd.

Victoria sign ex-Green Bay captain Jakopin
Posted 13 years agoVictoria has secured the services of former Green Bay Thunder captain Alfonz Jakopin via free agency on a one-season contract. The Totems had hoped that the sole defender left in the draft pool would be available, and graciously snapped him up as their third defender.
Jakopin arrives with notable street cred, posting 9 goals and 6 assists in 12 games last season and is likely to be used in attacking power play situations.
Victoria would also like to thank longtime Totem starters Bedtime Bear and Kurt Weaver for their services to the hockey club last season. Bedtime Bear was selected in the third round by Erie and Kurt Weaver will join Helena. We wish them all the best.

Totems draft Tamurello, LeLis, Hampton
Posted 13 years agoThe
Furry Hockey League Season 2 draft completed overnight, with Victoria adding three players that didn't fully hit their stride last year, but have a lot of upside.
Before the puck hit the ice last season, I rated Nathan Tamurello as the #1 player in the league. After bouncing from Bridgeport to Hamilton, Tamurello never quite lived up to his skills on paper, but was still a contributing factor to the Wanderers' Cup run. Victoria drafted him in the third round, 36th overall, hoping his experience and potential will produce plenty of goals in red and white this season.
Manny LeLis will bring a big, beary presence to the Totems blueline, after being drafted with the first pick of the fourth round, 49th overall. The draft report describes him as "a confident two-way defenceman. Quick for his size. Has skills to quarterback the team's power play unit."
Brodie Hampton comes to Victoria with the 77th overall pick of the draft, despite being a first round selection for the Las Vegas Highrollers last season. The Red Kangaroo is expected to form a strong partnership with his fellow Australian marsupial, Paskhowl, on offense.
The lineups will be completed in the coming days as free agency opens.

Victoria welcomes back enforcer Ricky Thicke
Posted 13 years agoThe entire Victoria organisation is delighted to announce that Ricky Thicke has been picked up as the 11th pick of the second round of the FHL draft, 27th overall.
Ricky was a rough and commanding presence on the Totems blueline last season, winning the Best Enforcer award at the FHL end-of-season Awards Night. With the expansion to 16 teams, all rosters could only hold onto four players, but we're glad that we were able to bring the rugged Raichu back into the fold.
Stay tuned for the results of Victoria's next pick, 36th overall.

Totems select Coutzy with their first round pick
Posted 13 years agoThe Season 2 FHL draft has begun. Star goalie Raz Yoshi went #1 overall to new outfit Salt Lake City, and several other players with FHL experience followed, but Victoria have selected the rookie Coutzy. Coutzy impressed at the World Championships with 4 goals and 5 assists over 7 games, and helped take Asia Pacific through to the semi-finals.
While listed as a center, it is expected he will be moved to left wing, leaving Rain to take the first draws of the season.
I'm looking forward to adding some defensemen to our roster next.

Victoria Totem PawsSeason 1 Review
Posted 13 years agoIt was a tough first season for the Totem Paws in the league. Despite scrapping our way to some memorable wins, particularly over divisional rivals Saskatoon and Portland, we missed out on the playoffs by a single point.
Our goalies, PichuPal and Fin Aurelius, were first class all the way, and I'm pleased to report they'll be sticking with the team next year. Surely one of them would've won Goalie of the Year honours if they hadn't split so much time with each other! Your professionalism and enthusiasm for fellow teammates is to be highly applauded.
In the meantime, I'll be working with the league on rule improvements, plus recruiting and scouting players to see how we can improve the Victoria lineup, and on-ice results, for next season.

Rounds 1-6
Posted 14 years agoThe first full FHL season has well and truly kicked into gear, with three weeks of games going by in a flash. Here in Victoria, we're still getting to grips with the new league and playing together. Starting 2-4 obviously wasn't what we were looking for, but the playoffs still await us.
The Totem Paws have shown an ability to generate scoring up front and from the blue line, both goaltenders are making plenty of saves and, after being shutout against divisional leader Portland, we rebounded strongly to win 3-2 in round 6.
This week, we have two home games coming up against Saskatoon and Lexington. The match against Saskatoon will be a pivotal one. We're competing against the Prairie Dogs for a playoff spot and we were only just edged out 4-5 in round 4. I trust the Victoria fans will give our Northwest Division rivals a loud welcome when they roll into town for Monday's game!

Preseason Round 1: Victoria vs Hamilton
Posted 14 years agoHAMILTON 4 - 2 VICTORIA
Sasada (W) - 28 Saves
PichuPal (L) - 39 Saves
First Period
(no scoring)
Second Period
HAMILTON GOAL: Demidov (1) - Assisted by Paul Shepherd (1), Bisallion (1)
Third Period
HAMILTON GOAL: Rentonen (1) - Assisted by Demidov (1)
HAMILTON GOAL: Demidov (2) - unassisted
VICTORIA GOAL: Rain (1) - Assisted by Weaver (1), Bedtime Bear (1)
HAMILTON GOAL: Bisallion (1) - Assisted by Paul Shepherd (2)
VICTORIA GOAL: Weaver (1) - Unassisted
It wasn't the start to the season we were looking for, but we shouldn't feel too disappointed. It's only the preseason; it wasn't our day. G Lord Pichupal played a terrific game under pressure, saving 39 of 43 shots. D Kurt Weaver contributed with a goal and an assist. We'll aim to generate more offence and cut down the shot count come the season.
I'll keep an eye on Hamilton's next game to see whether we were up against a big-time player or a mid-table team.

Draft and Free Agency Pickups
Posted 14 years agoThe
fhl draft and free agency signings have completed over the past week and I'm pleased to report that the Victoria Totems are ready to hit the ice and make a big impact this season.
Rain was selected with the 8th overall pick of the first round, filling our need for a quality centreman. His faceoff skills are second to none in the league. I expect this wolf will be setting up a lot of goals right from the get-go.
Lord Pichupal was selected with the second pick of the seoond round (14th overall). Pichupal will be manning the pipes for the Totems. He impressed me with his quick reflexes and ability to hold onto pucks, starving the opposition of scoring chances off rebounds. He's a modest, humble guy and I think this Raichu is a terrific fit for the team.
Bedtime Bear was selected with the first pick of the third round (25th overall). He's a strong, accurate shooter with good defensive tendencies for a forward. I think we'll do well with the puck in his capable paws.
Fin Aurelius was acquired through free agency. Fin will also be appearing in net for the Totems. He's great down low and knows how to flash the pads. Fin looks like a very sturdy presence in goal and at just 22 years of age, this wolf/husky will only get better.
I eagerly await this Monday's pre-season tournament so we can watch these stars strut their stuff!
