Just some final notes on the step by step.If you wish to see the step by step of how I painted this picture go check out my scraps and see 20 in progress shots as well as chatter about how I paint.
Once I finished up the details on the masque I spent some time going over the entire painting to make sure it all flows together. More glazing with the ultramarine blue and burnt umber, deepening some shadow areas, paying particular attention to thrown shadows. Final whites added with opaque acrylic ink to punch up the highlights. And then comes knowing when to stop and say "it's done!". It can be very easy to keep fussing with a painting and then realize you've overworked it. Take a breath and step back!
14 x 20 acrylic on illustration board. Original will be in the Anthrocon art show (most likely matted and framed). Prints are available. Regular 8 1/2 x11 are $10. 11x17 high quality on illford lustor paper are $30. Hope you guys have enjoyed watching how I produce a painting. If you wish to see any of the details blown up and posted here just ask:)

It was so fun to watch this develop ^___^! And I love the final choice of colors, it makes my mouth water...and Im not sure why. The contrast of subdued pale tones against bright bold ochres and warm emerald hues...mingled with warmer blues...oh I think it just works sublimely well.
Practice, mostly. There's this wonderful modelling material that's essentially powdered paper. Makes a nice, light mask that you can add detail and paint to- gorgeous stuff... I'm experimenting with it to see what I can come up with it- gonna use it for the base for some dragon-masks I want to make. *grins* Your work is so gorgeous, by the way. Thank you so much for posting how you go through a painting- very informative and will go a long way toward improving my own work. Thank you!
Not only is this a beautiful piece, it's been thoroughly enjoyable (not to mention very informative) to watch you talk about your process along the way. I learned a lot from seeing how you use your paints, in what order, watching what color choices you make, and so on. I'm just starting to dabble in those watercolor-style acrylics for coloring and it's been awesome to see how you use yours. It gives me a lot of ideas, and a lot more confidence in my ability to actually paint things. Some of my practice things look a lot like some of your earlier steps. :)
Kudos!
Kudos!
You know? i will have to start inventing new words, "Wonderful" and "Fantastic" and "Superb" just don't cut it anymore.
This piece is great, i spent at least 20 minutes admiring this one (would have stayed more time, but had to head for work ) The jewelry, the mask which makes you wonder why is she wearing/carrying it, the peacock feathers carved from the rock.
I can't get out of my head she is a priestess or shamaness of some sort.
And you could try making the mask papier mache style i guess. you just have to remember your elementary school days when you covered the ballon with newspaper sheets soaked in a mix of flour, some glue and water.

Holy fark. The detail in this is amazing, from the stuff I'd usually comment on like the fur/hair/face&eyes to the stuff I usually wouldn't have thought about like the jewelry and clothing decorations. That mask looks really nifty as well, nice shading/lighting effects & design (the gold/turquoise/whatever the white material is theme makes it look really delicate and heavy, very ornamental, and complements the outfit and fur so nicely)... I also really like the embossed, grey ostrich feathers in the background - it's almost like an extension of the outfit because of its natural ornateness, but the lack of vivid color helps provide distinct contrast nonetheless.
