I seem to have a nack for shedding light on lesser known one shot characters. And this guy is no exception. For those of you who don't know who this is, this is Monster Mutt, a character who appeared in a single episode of the 1984 spin off series "The New Scooby Doo Mysteries". His first and only appearance was in the episode titled "A Scary Duel with a Cartoon Ghoul". Ordinarily, Monster Mutt was a fictional cartoon character who appeared in Scrappy Doo's favorite TV series "Hero Hound" (this is in the show by the way). And as you guessed, Monster Mutt was the villain, and an arch-enemy to the main protagonist so originally called "Hero Hound". And you can probably guess why I chose to make fanart of this character; mainly for his general design and for his skimpy and revealing fashion sense that was common in cartoons around that era. Now, since this is Scooby Doo we're talking about, it should come as no surprise that Monster Mutt was just another guy in a costume, which is typical of most Scooby Doo cartoons. Not that this is surprising because well let's face it; while Mystery Inc. has faced a few real monsters in the past, there's no denying that almost every single time, the monster was just a guy in a costume.
But nevertheless, I found Monster Mutt's design to be rather interesting. Mainly because well, he closely resembled the canomutants from Road Rovers in terms of being a feral anthro dog in revealing fashion. Although he came a decade before Road Rovers even existed. Still though, I mean he looks like a classic supervillain. Now I know I didn't color this in. But Monster Mutt had gray fur with a skin tonned snout and a black nose. His leotard and boots were kind of a lavender color with green accents. And on his leotard he wore a belt with a yellow buckle. He also had a green cape, a lavender TMNT inspired mask, and his leotard had a green capital "M" for his name (like most superheroes and supervillains). Monster Mutt only had two lines of dialogue. At the beginning of the episode as the heroes and the studio were viewing their cartoon in the screening room, Monster Mutt said "You won't catch me, Hero Hound!" while running from the main protagonist of the said show. And towards the end of the episode, he said "At last I got what I want!" as he was stealing a roll of film from the studio. But throughout most of the episode, Monster Mutt just made feral sounds like growling and snarling. When Mystery Inc. finally captured him and removed his mask, he was revealed to be a security guard by the name of Dimwittie (Hey, I didn't name him). And well, that's basically his whole story. Now, I didn't know about this character until my friend David on DA introduced him to me. And I looked everywhere for screen shots and videos for this episode. But the information regarding this character is very scarce. That is until recently when I watched the episode on KissCartoon.com.
In our fanfiction, Monster Mutt is not a guy in a costume, but a real anthropomorphic dog with a dark and tragic backstory to better explain why he is the way he is. And in my redesign of him, he remains true to his 80s counterpart, except for some minor differences. For instance, his legs are more humanlike, he has a more defined body, the M on his chest is exaggerated, and I gave him gloves. He speaks clear English, and I gave him some special powers to make him a more formidable foe. Because in his one appearance, he didn't have any powers. And in my fanfictions, he is a disciple of Daemon the Hellhound.
