I wear fingerless gloves. You can't work well with regular gloves on since you can't grip the envelopes properly :p

They do, though the ones barking at me were either labs, or small pooches that bark all the time. :p

Congratulations on having a job! I served in Canada Post during the Xmas rush once and both my brothers were letter carriers once. (One should be retiring from it soon.) It's an honourable position, good luck!

...are people just not maintaining their letter boxes?

One of the streets on my course in an oldish city street, high in traffic but with oooold buildings. They have annoying letter boxes at times, most of them having a slot in the door instead of a box. Add to the fact that some of those are about 10cm above ground level, and you're in for a thrill. X3
The job would be even better if we didn't need to carry around commercial flyers etc.

They're a bit pricey, but Oakley makes a decent pair of gloves that you can still grip paper and other stuff with. I used them quite a bit in Iraq
