I agree with this alot.. and decided to re-post it, both on DA and here, if you want to re-post it, please contact
DarkDyami here and on Deviant Art for permission!
Such a touchy subject I will be talking about and may it be taboo "Copying and Resemblance to Characters and Artistic Skill Character"
This subject has had it rounds about, it has been bugging me for sometime now actually. People seem to be WAY over reacting about things even if its just a "Resemblance" of their Character you need to know theirs a HUGE difference between Resemblance and Copying.
-Artistic Skill-
Some people Own white wolves with blue/red/or even purple eyes which is fine easy to do no artistic thought needed, but with you doing that, you can't exactly go around to every page Flame/Troll etc; others about them copying you because ya know what? Your Character has "No Ground" Sitting there with someone so simple no artistic skill to make them different from anything else anyone has ever seen. Anyone and everyone can own a white wolf with blue eyes/red or which ever you please.
Now another breed that seem to be popping up everywhere is what I can the "Ebola" Wolf not saying I don't enjoy some of them, some have more features to them instead of bleeding every where from their body than their Ass (lmao!) Their is some people out there who have characters them say in Example "Tears of blood when they cry" but they have a Whole wide range of design to that character beside being one color and only having that Blood part too it. People get so wound up about Claiming something that probably around the world 50,000 other people have Identical, plus the fact you can not really claim something as simple of two features.
-Copying Resemblance-
Copying for some artist out there is very touchy and very taboo! I have seen people's hard earned work/characters copied down to a "T" Several artist here on devi can relate to this subject. Think of this you worked really hard on a character that other people have never seen before like a Dragon Wolf mix lets just throw in there, of course you would be proud of something like it and would get angry to see anything like it, Its only human.
Now say you did find something that looked like it Not ENTIRELY like it, Having the Dragon Wolf Features but not the design of your character at all. Its just a Resemblance picture only, flipping out flaming/trolling this person only makes you look bad in the end. You should Sit back and think "Wow this is So-and-so this is a good picture but it is not my character-
I have seen this happen so many times its unbelievable, and I usually do not step in very often but more offer advice to the person who getting flamed. "Just put those people on ignore and laugh about it, cause their immaturity is just crying for attention"
Here is a Good example of Resemblance

Very top picture is a Character of Neltie and below is mine, Neltie was the first person who drew the first picture of Marddrix which was some time ago now. Now if you look both characters have "horns and a Mane" but their nothing of the same its just a Resemblance "ONLY" I have no Images of people's characters Copied as they are very quickly Removed from deivanart from the staff when reported.
Next time when you think of making a character and don't want it to be so common think about it for a bit don't rush into making something, and when you see something that looks like your sit back for a minute and see if it is "Your Character" or just a "Resemblance" only.
:new: Two Subjects "Tracing and Claiming a Pose and Reference"
-Tracing-
Now if anyone has the right amount of brain cells in their so called brain Tracing is wrong not only Wrong but if their Copy Written it is Illegal to copy/trace someones work, which could end up with a Minimal 50,000 dollar fine the MINIMAL! and the Max is 1,000,000 Now if you think mom and daddy will pay that I think your sorely mistaken. You have two choices to pay in cash or jail time. It does not Always result in such hostility because some people either don't know their art work is being sold/traced/copied or if they do know they have Already given Written Consent to the person who is doing the work.
Their is no smart Copy cat out there I have seen them all "I have written consent from so-so" but really they don't and the copy of their artwork will continue, now I am not saying double check with people but if something does seem to be uneasy than I would make sure the artist is aware of the slander action that is happening to his/her work.
Tracing is the lowest of the low sport of artwork, when people spend COUNTLESS hours in their work just to have a low life to trace it, seems kinda unkind and not respectful and if you really thinking copying/tracing peoples work that your still being respectful, Hunie you need to wake up and smell the damn coffee. Their is not ONE artist out there who does not in some way get angry to see their hard work traced, plus if it is copy written work you do trace than you will be a sorry soul when you are asked to go to court.
Copy written is not there for the fun of it, it is there so people can keep their art to themselves, have something that they have cherished etc. So Please think before you act upon jealousy/or/envy.
-Claiming a Pose-
Me and a couple fellow artist have been talking about this most of them you would probably know too, their even finding this outrageous that people your claiming a Pose? Can I ask you one thing "What the hell are you thinking!?" You can not claim a pose in anything, it is not Artistic Design of something. Now think of a Wolf, which pose should you put him in? Lets say standing and looking at you. There is a picture of a wolf in a pose, now that being said you can't have him in that pose because of some law children today and maybe even adults are getting confused with it.
Now think this EVERY POSE you see with ANY artwork has been seen before in a Magazine/Art Work etc, now that being said you might think but it is Copy Written. That maybe so but the only thing that is copy written is the picture itself meaning like if you aint Joe and selling his work, you will be in BIG trouble. Now if you still not Joe and you make your own wolf picture in the Similar pose, that is fine because your not grabbing Joe's work Copying it and selling it.
Here is another example if you look at a National Geographic, you will see wolves etc, and most of the photos in there are copy written to the Photographers now that means tracing/coping that is Illegal but you would have to copy it down to a "T" that means everything that man or woman has caught in that photo, now if you get inspired and use it as a Reference Par-say that is alright, I do suggest saying where you used it though. (that's just me)
-Reference-
Using a Reference Everybody use's them even the very Talented artist like Goldie (goldenwolfen) Dark Natasha and others, using a Reference is very helpful to people who are stuck in a bit of anatomy, or some part of the body of an animal they may have difficulty with. Like me I look at many peoples work of paws and how they do them and practice of some scrap paper, some people might confuse Referencing with tracing I have seen this happen WAY to often.
People will grab a photo or picture from a not so popular person and technically trace it, literally which they would call Heavy Referencing. Here is A prime Example of what I mean [link] this artist would say she was Heavily Referencing this picture but if you were to compare the two their exactly the same, plus she would not post it on devi. Which just proves my point of that would be tracing, Big Difference between the two.
