I sympathize with you on the shitty laptop gaming aspect. I too own a laptop that is incapable of playing a game made in the last 5 years.

I've got Half-Life 1, Quake and Deus Ex loaded up. Also, Dwarf Fortress, but that might be kind of iffy in the late game.

Seriously, you can handle df but not tf2?

DF is what killed my laptop.
... Well, accidentally covering up the heat vent thingy probably contributed, but the computer wouldn't have been working so hard on any other game!

Well, I've got a shitty Intel integrated graphics card that can only handle DirectX 8. Did Valve stop support DX8 or something? I can't force it anymore. Even with -dxlevel 80 it defaults to DX9.

The best I've been able to without unplayable lag is L4D at the lowest possible graphics settings.

UPDATE: I actually tried running Half-Life. Runs fine until I turn my flashlight on, at which point the framerate plummets.

I am so embarrassed.

You should try alien swarm that on steam.. fun to play and can run on laptop *squee*
and and.. it free!!!!

I kinda doubt that. I can barely run Torchlight on the lowest settings, and any recent Source game just crashes outright.

And besides that I've been playing it pretty much nonstop since it came out. I'm kind of sick of it, ha.

Actually Alien Swarm is based on Source engine that... can be pretty much explained as a inbetween of L4D2 and Portal 2 Source engine.

It's probably rather lightweight for being a new game but even then, if you're unable to play TF2 then Alien Swarm would be worse <<

I've never understood why anyone would want to even try playing games on a laptop, anyways. :I I mean, if a person is away from their actual PC for long enough that they need a laptop with them, shouldn't they be more focussed on enjoying all the away-from-home stuff than... you know... attempting to do exactly what they'd have been doing if they were still at home?

I'm an introvert. I don't particularly LIKE traveling. My ideal vacation involves a cool quiet room with good books, a sketchpad and no interruptions.

Since the "no interruptions" part isn't going to happen for the next week and a half, I'd rather have a laptop around to blot the world out. Heheh.

Trust me, you don't really want a laptop that can play games. Mine can, but I can't use it on my lap cos it gets so hot I get the wonderful aroma of roasted nuts when doing anything as simple as word processing. And battery life takes a massive hit too :/

All of my computers are old and/or shitty, so I can relate.
A friend recently 'acquired' a computer from someone that he's letting me have, and with a little work, it might almost resemble an up-to-date system.
