I actually cancelled my pre-order after playing in the FFXIV Beta. The game is honestly just not that well made. Aesthetically it's the best MMORPG out there, game-play and interface-wise, after so many years of FFXI, they couldn't improve it and in fact went backwards in some respects?!
World design appears to be many, many, many corridors despite it being seamless with no loading now (I guess all the corridors are to make up for lack of open areas?). It takes how many buttons to get to friends' list? The interface is bugging on many levels as well, including one I suffered all the way until last day of beta: lack of minimap.
Honestly speaking, in roughly a week's time before launch, I highly doubt many of the issues will be fixed. The major gameplay and interface decisions are set in stone as well.
Having been a long time FFXI player, I had hoped FFXIV would've improved but using nearly the same character 'races', same style cities... I dunno, it just seemed more like a cheap 'let's just upgrade the graphics and re-sell with a modified gameplay system' instead of a brand new game. The number of people playing together also makes starting areas extremely crowded, resulting in a lot of waiting to find a mob to kill - this is due to lack of mobs because of world/level design (again, corridors - they can only fit so many).
After saying all this though, the story appears to be pretty well thought out, cutscenes are gorgeous and near-seamless, the world is PRETTY (although you need a good computer or PS3 to run it), it's cheaper than FFXI (subscription wise), the online system is somewhat better, and the game does draw you into the world if you can ignore all the annoying aspects of it.
I hope you guys were in beta to try it or at least are able to take a trial run of it before buying it. Personally, I think FFXIV will semi-flop. The only thing that will keep it going is name alone and die-hard FF fans.
I havent played the beta or the predeccesor, but to be honest I am just looking for some shiny lights and immersive world not neccesarilly a seamless game. Hell, world of warcraft is what, 5 or 6 years old now and theyre still balancing/fixing bugs. I imagine most blaringly obvious flaws would get ironed out, but then, I am a fairly lenient person when it comes to games. Unless theyre outright a pain in the ass to play or boring 90% of the time I tend to enjoy them for what they are.
I'm in the open beta. It's a good lookin game, just hard to level in because theres not enough mobs/quests around but hey that could get ironed out before beta ends. lol
After reading CWolfCW's post, i gotta agree with them. The game does need a lot of work in terms of progression. When i get it, i;ll probably be a mithra or a taru taru. yea i still call them by the FFXI names. I can't pronounce the new ones lol.
OMG YES SOMEONE THAT IS JUST AS EXCITED AS ME! I didn't get to play in the beta either, but looking at all of the footage from others people's games makes it look like a lot of fun. Maybe not for a hardcore gamer, but I still think I will enjoy it.
Again,
I'M SO EXCITED~
hope it arrives soon damn you amazon >_>
