Twin Forum for Starting a Furcon in Boston, now on Google
14 years ago
Nevar has been corresponding with me in private. Amongst many other things, he has been recommending that we use Google as the platform for our discussions. He has given me a ton of arguments in favor of Google. I agreed for there to be a twin forum on Google, as long as he founded it and ran it. He did found such a forum, and here it is: http://groups.google.com/group/boston-fur-party
Until we can decide which forum is superior, I'm afraid we'll have to cross-post on both, or, perhaps we will find it best to divide tasks between the two forums.
Please note that you will have to wait for approval to join the Google forum.
As my own argument in favor of Google: if Nevar is as much an asset as I think he will be, then we should let him work in a forum where he'd be most powerful, and that is Google.
Here are Nevar's arguments, to me, in favor of using Google:

I'm more familiar with Google's setup, and probably could put together a questionnaire through Google Docs once we know what information we need.

My preference is for Google, but that’s because what I know and love. It also looks like Google has made some major updates to their groups feature as well. I also know that using resources like Google Docs is one of the easiest ways for a group to work on a document, and has some great versioning options now built in.
I did find a great site for comparing boards, but the only trouble I have with it is seeing when things were reviewed, so I don’t know how accurate they are. http://www.forum-software.org/forum.....s-vs-proboards. There aren’t any review dates from what I’ve seen, and I just checked Google groups and they seem to be bragging about new features.
The only thing I’m currently unsure of, and I’d have to look into is if you’d have to get a Google account, or be able to use another account (such as LiveJournal or FaceBook) if you didn’t have a Google account. I wouldn’t want anyone having to sign up for more services then they need to. The other choice I’d like would be the Google apps, but I don’t believe we’d be able to get that for free.

I think why I like Google so much is the the Data Liberation Front (http://www.dataliberation.org/) about how Google tries to allow you to come and go as you please. I've also followed tech for a long time, and Google is one of the fastest to fix issues with security (among other things) and tends to do a lot of testing beforehand so those issues showing up are few and far between anyway. I agree on getting this behind us as well, the sooner the better.
