Over the past couple of days, I've gotten a few notes about the issue of FA banning Sonic art from the site. So, like any normal, calm, clear-minded person, I looked into it. So here's my Rumor Control, starting with the rumors, and the facts.
RUMOR: The admins have always hated fan artists, so this is their way of trying to purge FA of fan art. It'll become like Yerf.
FACT: Most of the admins fav, comment on, or even draw fan art themselves. I highly doubt they'd ban it all, since they seem to like it as well. And trust me, FA is a LOOOOONG ways away from Yerf. (Also, props to any old school furry who REMEMBERS Yerf. XD) Sonic art makes up a LARGE part of FA's community, so why would you want to remove your largest user base from your own site?
RUMOR: Ever since they banned cub porn, the admins have looked for an excuse to link Sonic art to that same genre.
FACT: Actually, it's the butt-hurt cubbies who are looking for that link, not the admins. That being said, yes, there are similarities between cub art and Sonic art. Both depict underage characters, for example. But the reason Dragoneer and the staff banned cub art was from a FINANCIAL standpoint, not a personal vendetta one. No one likes restrictions, but sometimes, there's no choice.

FACT: No, they're not. The problem is that the Sonic characters are, for the most part, underage. They LOOK underage. And when you draw underage characters in sexual situations, that causes eyebrows to be raised by other people. They've given us an easy solution: age up the characters in your porn drawings. It's not THAT hard to do it, and still keep them Sonic styled.
Bottom line is this, people. FA is NOT trying to ban Sonic artists. They simply don't want their financial backers to point to a picture of Sonic and Amy having sex, and say 'We don't support this. Remove it'. They're trying to AVOID banning adult Sonic art. The simple solution is to age up your Sonic characters. But if you choose to be stubborn, and keep drawing them as underage because 'it's official looking', then chances are, the admins are going to target you.
Sonic fans have had a bad reputation given to them as being a bunch of immature recolors who whine and complain about anything they don't like. Can we PLEASE at least TRY to show some maturity? Don't jump to conclusions, read the facts first, and for god's sake, THINK BEFORE YOU TYPE.

But I have a question for you about another issue going on with a friend of mine who is into Hypnosis along with others on FA. He's getting a bunch of spammers and flamers who hate his artwork just because he doesn't draw Pokemon how they normally should be drawn.
I've been seeing this more often around FA the past year. IDK why people target those who draw well but don't draw things canon. I don't think that's a problem since my friend's artwork is awesome and so does a bunch of other people but just like the other instances he's getting bashed for his work by a few others who when they bash they bash hard.
I've seen that all over FA the past year like I said and it's starting to tick me off to the point I told someone who says they are 15 "Respect those who clearly has more experience than you do." Never got a reply from him/her but this is the worst instance I've seen going on for one person here on FA. (on DA it was something worse but that doesn't matter.)
btw his name is Talisment. I wouldn't be surprised if you haven't since you're into hypnosis as well if I'm right.
but all in all I'm ticked off at seeing this happen so much lately.
Plus, at this point, if they want to really go through with this, they have to crack down on EVERYTHING. They've lit the fuse.
And I honestly don't understand the 'no official Sonic porn thing because financial blah blah blah.' Because.. really? Are possible funders going to look at FA and be disgusted by Sonic porn, or are they going to be disgusted by all the dogs fucking? Actually The Other Half said it best - "FA mods said one of the reasons for this rule on Sonic and cub porn was because they were worried of what business people/professionals would think of the site when they saw it. Let me ask you this: A grown business owner comes across this site and starts looking through all the pics of cartoon animals fucking, while wearing diapers, and eating eachother...do you really think the first thing on their mind will be "Hey, are they over 18?"?"
The way the Is situation was handled by Sciggles was pretty deplorable, especially after seeing screenshots of some of the PMs. It honestly didn't make much sense.
Plus, there's also been evidence that while not going directly after Sonic fan art outside of the Is incident, there's been evidence of going after OTHER sub-genres in the furry fandom. So of course people have gotten all excited and frightened.
The whole 'this is how you should be drawing Sonic' artwork also did not help. There's nothing wrong with Sonic style artwork, but everything done in the last few days has just about screamed that yes there is.
Which is pretty amazing, considering that the main cast of MLp characters get a pass, but Sonic doesn't.
Which is to say that Sonic, Knuckles, nearly the entire cast are adults. There's no reason for this to be THAT big of a problem.
It's a valid point you're making, but I'm saying that a similar thought can be applied to the Sonic cast as well. But we can talk more later on about it.
It is kind of a slippery slope though. I know FA is under a lot of pressure and if they're found hosting what someone may deem as being illegal, they're the ones who will receive the brunt of any legal battles or fines. At the same time, it's hard not to get butt-hurt, as when something of yours is pulled or deleted, there's really no way to contest it, and (in my experience) the reasons tend to be vague at best.
Either way, I doubt we'll degrade to another SheezyArt yet, and I'll keep posting my stuff here. And if it get's pulled, I'll thank my collection of 90's music for building my internal apathy. ^_^
To me, it's completely unoriginal to use someone else' style and call yourself an artist.
If you draw Sonic Art, and you use your own style, that's one thing. Lots of great artists have their own style of drawing the canon characters, and that sits fine with me.
Just because you can draw Sonic Style doesn't make you an artist. It makes you a copycat, and we all know how people feel about copycatters.
You're asking the Sonic Community to not act like a bunch of children over certain issues?
To be fair the community seems to be reworking itself to be more positive again, which is an excellent thing, but considering they've been in the pit of hell for the last eight years, what you're asking for may still be a tall order. Sonic fans are surprisingly defensive over what they see as 'their' IP. This includes their own artwork and taking personal ownership (And loathing) over games or details that don't even matter (HIS EYES ARE GREEN!!!???). Hopefully, with community events improving to incorporate more of the community at large, the number of defensive Sonic fans will continue to decrease. However realistically this is a trend that will take another 2 or 3 years to set in stone.
