C'mon guys! This is ridiculous,.you wouldn't believe the things that are illegal in this state..and i draw the line at charging a 8 year-old with misdemeanor for owning a gerbil.
That's right..Gerbils are illegal to own. They're seen as exotic animals. But all animals were wild once... should we count horses too? They also exist in the wild.
Gerbils are illegal to own, as well as perakeets and a ton of reptiles.
My first pet ever was a Gerbil named Keeker. We didnt have the space for a cat or dog, so my mom got me a little brown ball of fluff who was my companion for most of elementary school. He was my mothers way of teaching me responsibility, and honestly..i ran home every day because i felt like he was waiting for me.
She tought me what was alright for them to eat, to always keep water available..to make sure the bedding was clean, etc. I was an 'only child' in the sense that my two older brothers were 15,16 years older and no longer lived at home.
Rodents don't live very long and he did eventually pass away, but he was my best friend during his short little life and he brought me a lot of joy and happiness.
Lets give California's children their pets back.

there are tons more..feel free to look for more and be on the look out for things that might make a difference in the lives of California's kids.

If California is protecting local wildlife then I'm sorry but the kids can deal with it, just like the kids in Florida, Hawaii, and Louisiana to name a few other states that have several bans and laws on pets and animals.
Though I don't particularly know the letter of the law, I'd have to assume the CA ban is due to concerns that a population of gerbils might be established in the wild. The climate is certainly pretty perfect for such a thing. This would pose a direct threat to both native animal species as well as CA's agricultural industry. Though no example of this happening has been documented, I don't blame them for playing on the safe side after seeing what's happening with exotic reptile species in Florida.
Again, not saying I agree with the lawmakers on this, but they have pretty clear reasoning behind it. Also, while gerbils are great pets, I think fixing CA's budget and improving education both state and nationwide would make a bigger difference in kids' lives.
