To get there, you can catch the route 51A bus from the downtown stop in front of Trinity Cathedral at 6th and Smithfield Street. That's about a three block walk from the Westin and Doubletree and a block and a half walk from the Omni. Bus fares are $2.00 and a transfer is $.50. Check the schedule and catch the route 51A bus on the other side of Carson Street and it will bring you right on back.
Bus Route 51A Schedule.
When you get on the bus, tell the driver you need to get off at 20th and Carson Street and they will usually be helpful and announce your stop. The street numbers count up going outbound from the city and down when you're on your way back "downtown."
You can drive over as well if you like. There's metered parking on Carson Street and on the side streets for the first block. The Southside is laid out in a grid pattern but a few of the numbered streets may be one-way.
If you're just looking for a pen, sketchbook or other incidentals, there's an Office Depot that has opened up downtown on Smithfield Street between 6th and 7th Avenues. They're open Monday – Thursday 7am – 7pm; Friday from 7am – 8pm; Saturday from 9am -6pm and Sunday from Noon – 5pm
(623 Smithfield Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15222; Phone (412) 261-1110)
Hope that helps!

FA+

but i started in 90 in the fall and got my Associates Degree in commercial art. later turned to graphic design. back then there was Adobe Photoshop. and Aldus Page maker and Corel draw all with no numbers :) and we did not get to touch them til my last two quarters since they were that new :)
did they make you cut Keys by hand still. Oh i hated amberlith!
I had forgotten about the AIP Art Supply store. The school has since moved from Penn Avenue across town to the Blvd of the Allies between Grant & Smithfield.
I stopped in over lunch today and the Art Store is open M-F 8am - 4pm. They have no weekend hours, but the worst thing is, it's not open to the public anymore.
If you have an ID from one of the other Art Institutes around the country, you can get in though...just flash your ID.
Thanks for reminding me!

I haven't been to the new building yet. But purrhaps they'll let me in with my ancient AIP ID. I still carry it. ^^
It'll have to be next year, though, 'cause I ain't going to any cons this year.
