It happens for a few people. Someone either falls in love with a character design, wants the popularity, so on so forth. A bunch of reasons really.

Thought I heard it all in this fandom but the first reason is most disturbing. And slightly sad. xD

One I've heard told to me is for roleplay reasons...this tends to happen on instant-hookup sites and sites dedicated to social networking with sexual intent like, well, F-List, and its precedessors.

Someone will pick someone they are not and pose as them all for the sake of giving the fantasy of interacting with them. "Got a crush on ZigZag? Have your friend pretend they're ZigZag and run a series of roleplay scenarios or chat-fsckings involving her. Who's gonna find out? And if they do, who'd care? It's a chat-hookup site and lotsa people would come if I were ZigZag! Yay!" This is how some of them get started and justify themselves as harmless.

It's just something people think to do, irrespective of the fact they're basically playing with someone's identity. Due to past impostors it's why, on the more noteworthy and used ones, I at least try to name-squat and/or verify myself before someone else tries to...

I just find it funny when I run into doppelgangers of people. It must be a sad lonely existence.
