Atheism...does it have a point?
To those of you who don't know me, I am one of those ass-holish atheists who try to get others to believe (Or disbelieve) what I do for reasons seemingly justifiable only to me. However, upon greater scrutiny from my painfully Christian girlfriend, it actually got me thinking.....WHY do I try to get others (At least those close to me anyways) to think the same way I do? At first I'd told her I'd rather have her thinking rationally and follow nothing that I felt had been scientifically disproven. I thought that if I got her in the same theoretical boat as me that she'd be better off for it, meaning I felt that she'd be a much more thoroughly thinking and logical person. Yet looking back on it, I had a ridiculously hard time justifying to her over the phone WHY I really was trying to do it, not to mention there've been quite a few religious scientists sprinkled quite generously throughout history.
I've always told myself I should respect the beliefs of others, and though I respect them it just irks me that the beliefs of those close to me differ so radically that I end up trying to convert them. Why do I do it I wonder? Perhaps, as Lin Chi said, I am still bobbing in the sea of delusion...

Just stop caring about religion or lack thereof. Consider the idea of god(s) and/or faith to be irrelevant to your life.
^^
But tell me, what is the logic to so throughly believe something does not exist when there is no proof either way? Does not science teach us that till an event is observed it is both true and untrue?
And yeah...I have been called a control freak on a number of accounts :P Although it still only really pertains to one or two people :P
This is one reason I can agree with religious people when they say everything happens because of God's will. Though, it isn't so much the will of a single being but both the combined wills of everyone, conscious or subconscious, and the natural courses nature takes.
Also....during High School me and some friends often used to live under the guise of Modern LaVeyan Satanists. It was more for shits and giggles but we did love to accuse people of religious intolerance whenever they said we were evil or something to that effect :P Also.....garnered a little more respect for all religions after learning that Modern Satanism really wasn't that bad.
I used to be very Atheist in my ways of thought at a younger age, though some experiences over the years kind of got me away from that mindset. Not to say I'm any kind of proper religious man now. I guess, to a lesser extent, sorta like Satosuke said, I've gained an apathy about it. Though I have a fairly positive outlook on things. *Shrug*
I'd say just do whatever you think is best. It's good that you're thinking about this though, which is something most people on the subject, religious or atheist, don't think about when the subject of converting others comes up.
Don't know what to really make of all this, and I'm not so sure I'm really ready for apathy seeing as religion has been with mankind since he first stood up right (Or at least a few ten thousand years soon after), though I do appreciate the comments...I still think the Buddha would be very disappointed with me :)
Anyways, I don't mind other people with their own beliefs, it only irks me when they try to force their views upon me. I won't believe in an all-powerful creator. If one did exist, I can only imagine that they created this world so they can have something to watch when bored.

MILITANT AGNOSTIC - I DON'T KNOW AND NEITHER DO YOU!!!
As for me, I'm an ordained minister in both the Universal Life Church and the Church of the SubGenius. Praise "Bob"! :7
I do think i'm pretty good about repecting other people's beliefs, too, though I like respectfully arguing about religion and philosophy a lot. x3
As for Atheism, the recently made popular type of Atheism in America acts in a way a lot like a religion and not so much as a philosophical statement like classic Atheism of the Old World.
Christians...
Muslims...
Agnostics...
Buddhists...
Wiccans...
...etc...
They're all just words, a connection to justify a belief with or without proof based upon perspective and understanding. So, as Satosuke said, you might be happier being an Apatheist but only if you think inwardly. To believe that religion has no impact on your life is just... preposterous. Your girlfriend is a Christian and you're an Atheist. That already makes becoming an Apatheist impossible. Not to insult Mr. Satosuke but Apatheism is a way for Atheists to cut corners and require little to no reason to advance themselves or others around them.
I'm at my core an Agnostic, but even I realize there is a flawed thinking in being Agnostic as well. I wont go into that any further unless asked of course.
I think you should stay Atheist because that is where your comfort zone is, but don't become apathetic in any shape or form. Instead you should become somewhat empathetic and understanding. Learn to tolerate it rather than to ignore it. You'll find it will not only prolong your relationship with this said girlfriend of yours but it might actually improve the health of the relationship to where it's actually feasible. If you love your girlfriend, you'll have to understand that God exists in her perspective and trying to alter that belief will only throw your relationship in discord.
