Personally I would say each league would be about a year, with the battle frontier and orange isles being half a year a piece. By that token I'd say like 16

yeah him being eternally 10 gets stale/frustrating after a while, made all the worse by the fact that he seems to regress each time he enters a new league (no way Trip should have beat him when he first came to Unova)

Ash is 10. Which means Gary is 10 as well. Gary moved on and became a professor. In pokemon world you can become a honored professor when you're 10.

I thought we all recognized that this was the Simpsons sliding time scale. In that no one ages or changes unless we absolutely need them to.

I thought about that as well. The Simpsons clearly talks about different things that have happened in the series that have taken place years ago, they even actively talk about what year it is in certain episodes. It's pretty much become a running gag.

In Pokémon characters go through a period of growth and change through triumphs and hardships. Like the above comments mentioning Gary becoming a professor. Unless they're rebooting every series, which they don't.

They also do that thing where other characters grow older around Ash.

I have a theory on this. Remember Ash died in the first movie. After that the pokemon brought him back to life. Maybe those magic tears had a negative effect on his body. Maybe he is trapped in an eternally youthful body. Maybe the air-headedness is a mask for his pain when he realized that he will never age the same as his friends.

And just think of all the legendaries that owe him a favor. Maybe they need him alive and will it to be so. Maybe they blessed/cursed him with eternal youth for a greater purpose. In the meanwhile his friends secretly know this. That's why the girls shove him into the friend zone (except Misty and May, but they have their own stories in my head), and he has man servants (except Tracy. He was just a fanboy looking for Oak's attention and is currently in a budding relationship with Gary).

Actually most of the time it's because they leave him for various regions. Misty had to go be the gym leader since her sisters were incompetent at it, May was... I forgot but, she left for a reason, Dawn is a Pokemon Coordinator and the Pokemon Contests only happen in one particular region at any given time, Ash is just retardadly lucky to be in the right one at that point. Now, Iris... I have no clue haven't really watched the anime much during the B/W seasons.

Not really from what was shown, it was obvious he was hesitant to part from them each time they left, honestly I think his mental regression is just a way for his childish mind to cope with the pain of all these people who he's risked life and limb with going on with their lives.

Though the explanation made about Pokemon the first movie's climax causing him to be ageless (Immortals cannot die Ageless are people cannot age but, are still mortal.) Doesn't help matters either. I think in all honesty Ash is in fact an extremely sensitive kid and because of the fact that he can't handle his friends leaving when he leaves a region he reverts knowledge wise back to a fresh start with some heavy mental blocks.
