Don't Trace, Create.

I think that sometimes the truth just hurts, other times it can get you killed depending who it's about.

I pulled down my last posting because I struck a nerve with someone who has been a distant friend for quite a while, I think that in his mind he is Punishing me by not watching me anymore. I told him to do what he thinks he has to do. Personally I think it's childish, nor am I going to loose any sleep because of it. Am I disappointed? Yep, because I think everyone has a right to their opinions. As for why I think it struck a nerve? Well lets just say that thinks went real sour for a while.

Now I guess he thought that I was bent out of shape that I wasn't so popular. The truth is that I draw furry art, and is part of furry fandom because I enjoy it, not for a popularity contest. Many of us might have our differences, opinions and believes, but I have met many wonderful people threw out the years, and I have met many new ones just recently. You guys put the fuel into me to make me want to improve, and explore new possibilities when it comes to my art. If you guys have an issue with me, about something that I have drawn or posted talk to me about it. If we disagree, than we disagree, I'm not going to do any name calling if we do disagree.

What ever the case is, I feel real good. . .mentally with resent events and artwork that I have done. The pain in my right arm, and shoulder, well that keeps on getting worse, and I'm waiting for my insurance company to get back with me for my MRI.

BTW I really need to get a listing of my Commission slots up on who is in what order because they are going fast which something that I wasn't expecting, because I really haven't open them since it got out by word of mouth at TFF.

Yeah... I have a similar thing with commissions. I don't advertise, but I get them anyway. Part of the feedback I've been getting is that I do the work & it doesn't take six months (or six years) like it does with other artist. I also have a five-deep cutoff so I don't get so backlogged that it takes forever.

Last November or so, I got a note from a friend who said the artist he commissioned in 1997 was finally getting around to doing the work he paid her for. Checked in with him a couple of weeks ago & she still hasn't delivered it.

At least he is getting his, I still haven't got my $600 one from 91.

I'm guilty of dragging on for months, and I really have no excuse other than I went threw a bad artist block because of some personal crap that happened.

Heh... yeah. I had a big block between 2001 and 2010, but that was the result of "outside forces" interfering with my career as an artist.

Part of my big issue was job related. From 09 my art productivity was very much in the toilet do to problems of being short staff at work causing me to have to spend a lot of time in the bay's, and then the fire department. So the pores in my hands always had grease and oils in them. Now that we are staffed, and hung up my hat, I've been getting a lot more done. It also help taking a backwards step by going back more to an improved traditionally style. I'm still going to do digital images but not till I can take care of some health issues. I think by lowering my monitors it will help out with the neck pains.

My latest 2 sculpts have gone over 2 years now and they are still in the paint stage. In my defense, I don't take any money up front since I know I can take a long time and it's not fair to the commissioner. I also keep them up to date with progress Emails and always offer them to back out if they are not ok with the timeline. I am just finding in my older age, doing work for others is more work than fun. In the case of these sculpts it is just motivation and not being mentally drained form work since I am actually liking how they are coming out.

Personally I don't mind artists taking a long time SO LONG as this is communicated up front and the buyers are knowing what they are getting into. And if you know it will take a long time, don't take al the money up front. that's jut not right in my books anyway.

If I get behind, usually will let them know along with throwing in some extra goodies.

Your sculptures are very impressive, and I can see how they can take a very long time.

It's not that the sculpts are taking a long time, it's just a long time between the times I work on them. I have to be motivated or I make mistakes. I think I only have about 20 - 25 hours in each figure so far.

I was trying to explain that to a friend if mine the other day, I was calling it the zone. He finally got it after I compared it to one of his creations and how he would be hammering to the wee hours in the morning keeping me awake.

Me, I sometimes get so lost on a project because I made it to complicated, you could say I got lost in the layers in Photoshop.

So much this! I used to be able to churn out art when I was in my teens and twenties, but once you get past 40, it becomes more of a chore than a joy. I don't like (and usually refuse) to take any money up front now, since I had stupidly taken on several sketch slots years back, and gotten myself severely bogged down by them, leading to art block, depression and guilt, which in turn made me take even longer on them, because I felt obligated then to make each sketch into a super-detailed, fully-shaded image to make up for the wait. And of course, that quickly developed into a catch-22, with each subsequent image getting increasingly more detailed, and thus taking longer and longer to finish them. So what started out as $25 "sketches" (that had been paid up-front) ended-up being detailed graphite works that I would have charged $100-200 or more for, simply because I felt so guilty for the wait. Never ever again; I learned my lesson the hard way with all that, and now I tell up-front anyone who wants to commission me to expect a long wait, but with an awesome result, and if they aren't ok with the wait, they should go elsewhere (and that I don't do deadlines). :P

Yeah, you need to get organized on who got what commission when. I suggest either using something like a spreadsheet in google docs, or trello.com I see some artist use now that any can view to see how busy an artist is or where their commission is in the queue. Hell *I* may even use Trello to sort out what am I commissioning folks to do since I loose track easily.

I have it written down on paper in my studio. The reason why it's not up was because I'm still learning some of the commands.

Thanks and I feel great. I had a blast at TFF even though some question mark man was creeping me out a little. I was trying to catch up with way to many people on that I was cutting others short. It's been years since I have seen many of them/ I do hope to start making it to more meets out in the D/FW area.
