It's not mine, why should I care?

Question of the day came to me after my visit to my therapists, and brought to you by the letters K, Y, the number 3.
Do you think that people have better respect and care for things if they own it? Also do you think that there is a differences on whether they have to work for something, vs just being given to them?
What made me think about this was yesterday when I was at physical therapy, I kept on hearing this loud crashing noise and every time it happened, I noticed my therapist would roll back his eyes. Then he tells me that it's a couple of guys working out in the front room doing Olympic weightlifting. He told me that he wanted to kick them out but couldn't because he was not the main manager. I told him that I would go over there and tell him hey don't you have respect for anybody else is equipment? He just told me that's worth not starting trouble and getting kicked out myself. Then I told the therapist well I wonder if they would do the same thing if that weight bench and equipment was in the back of his $50,000 pickup truck which was sitting in the parking lot.
The problem with today's time, people feel that it's not theirs why care about it.

Smokers are constantly using public beaches and parks for their ashtrays. You'll see discarded trash along most highways. The people who do these things are usually not tossing their crap on their own property.
I have over 500 DVDs. All are in like new condition. People ask to borrow them all the time, but I learned very quickly to always say no. Some people beg and plead, and I still say no. Why? Because every single time in the past that I loaned one out, it came back scratched, or so dirty that it had to be cleaned. I've received them back with pizza, peanut butter, jelly, and other stuff on them. I've received them back with the covers broken, or the paper stained with beer or coffee, or torn. I'd have to say that most people have zero respect for other people's property, and they simply don't care. Sure, there are exceptions, but the respectful people seem to be very rare.
For example: so many people walk on the flag because they never knew anyone who died defending it.
So many people treat fast food workers like shit because they never worked the job themselves.
I can go on and on. Some people never developed enough empathy foe their fellow human being to respect their things
They have to be shown how their assholes.
It's like they always say; you can't buy integrity from somebody who has none to sell.
