Alternatives?

Alright, so the project is held up due to technical issues that are beyond my power. it was initially planned to be made in stencyl since the program was flexible and cross platform, however; nobody knew how to program in haxe at all and that has left me on my own, and since my own programming skills are more or less nonexistent, I had to move on.
I wanted to do it in game maker since more people are familiar with it in programming. but then came the issue of being cross platform. I own a mac with an old copy of windows XP as a side partition, and I'm not sure if I can effectively collaborate with others without having to use a gangly and potentially unstable setup just to use the program itself. and with it wanting to run through steam, that only complicated matters further.
So then, are there any other engines out there that I could possibly use for the project? my coding knowledge is extremely limited so I cannot really craft the game without an engine of some kind. Still, I want to be able to contribute to the programming to some degree however, and not just work on the visual assets for the game though.

You could look into Construct/Construct 2, which was made by disgruntled ex-developers of MMF. I think I've heard good things about it, but I don't know if it would run on a Mac. You'd need to do some research.
Some years back there were two Flash-based game-making things, Flashpunk and Flixel. I don't know a lot about them, and don't really know if they're still around, but it could be worth looking into.
And then of course there's Unity, the current frontrunner, which I'm sure you've already looked into. It would require some deeper coding expertise to get anything done.
That's about all I can think of. I don't know if any of those will do the trick, but there are options.

Though by far the best introduction is to get a cheap (as in $5: http://store.steampowered.com/app/220780/) copy of Thomas Was Alone and listen to the dev commentary. It's very articulate and informative for creating this type of game.
