Grunge was very popular at the time, especially with Nirvana.

I remember the big moral panic over the Goth thing after it was unfairly blamed for Columbine.

Alternative/grunge was certainly popular, but there were other styles in pop culture too. Hip-hop culture and style for sure, all throughout the 90's. Rap too, such as SNoop Dog, Tupac, and Biggie. Also, there was kind of a country/line dancing revival in the middle of the decade, like with Garth Brooks, so country was a popular culture for a little bit. And "Spice Girl" style for tweenage girls (platform shoes especially) towards the end of the decade. And I guess general "preppy" boy-band/Brittany Spears style during that period too. OH yeah and the electronica/rave scene!! That was popular and had some distinctive features come from it, like super baggy pants. Not sure if this was big enough to be its own pop culture, and it may be part of the general alternative culture, but it seems there was something surrounding female rock and alternative musicians. Thinking Lilith Fair and "grrl power". Like guitars and folksy girl power. Those are the top ones I can think of right now.

My view of it: Pretty much had SEGA vs Nintendo, the reign of Sonic as a major game mascot and cartoon/comic character, some of the coolest days of rap culture before it became the scum that it is nowadays..., Basketball and those sport jackets that I can't remember the brand name of, Power Rangers and other Americanized Sentai properties (Kamen Rider, VR Troopers), the days of awesome Nickelodeon live action shows, Pokemon, Tamagotchis, Nano-pets, Digimon, Beanie Babies, and the anti-violent gaming rhetoric.

Interesting what people see as pop culture. Television (cartoons such as Pokimon), music (rap or county), or toys (Game Boy, Tickle Me Elmo). They say that a person's values are formed by the time they are 10 year old. I would think that pop culture is formed when you are in your teens and early 20's.

For my generation, my values formed during the equal rights movement, Veitnam. Pop cuture was on science, computers, hippies.

violent gangster rap was pretty big, i just remember playing a lot with my freinds and family, playing outside on swing sets, or playing sega genesis inside.

Video stores and the N64 were big in the 90's.
