Surface Pro 3 or Cintiq Companion 2, i5 or i7. Which one should I shoot for?
I know it's late, but come this September and for the next couple of years, I will be getting a pretty chunky tax return, but the way it came about is not something that I’m not proud to be cheering over, and that battle is yet to be over.
Now with part of the return, I'm going to be investing in a new graphics tablet but I want something on where I can do graphics on the fly. I just not 100% sure if I want to get Wacom Cintig Companion 2, or Microsoft's Surface Pro Three. Even though I like the looks of the surface a lot better, it can't be hooked up to my desktop to be used as a regular Cintig tablet, so I'm leaning more towards the Wacom product. What ever the case is, I know it won't make me a better artist if a get a fancy new toy, but I rather refer it as a tool, and one that can help produce productivity. The main use will be that of art and writing because I'm not much of a computer gamer.
So like usual I have been doing lots of research and watch YouTube videos via the Internet. I've been learning a lot about the systems, but some of the videos were just plain amusing.
Can you say this kid isn’t a little bit on the spoiled rotten side? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFeEh3auyDQ Look at all of them neat goodies in the background. I got a kick on how he said he has to use Mac because of the things that he does, but if you also look, there is a nice size Cintiq leaning against the wall. The his Cintiq Companion he's boasting about is an i7 which is one of the higher end model which is about $2000. What cracks me up is that in the end he commended that he probably won't be using it much as a stand alone tablet. So what was the point of getting it then? Besides he's not living on the normal plane of reality when it comes to the average kid.
The one thing that I was kind of disappointed in is that I could not really find any videos of people using the i3s of either product. I don't know if it has anything to do that people who own them just don't have the extra bucks laying around to get the video equipment to show them off. I did find a few of people showing off the i5s but most have been that of the i7s.
Now it's nothing against the CPU, but the i3 on either of them is out of the question. Even tho it might be pudding it, I know that processor can hand both Painter 11 and Photoshop CS6 and Painter 11. Not even the 4bg of ram scares me, but 64gb of SSD storage, that's not much when it comes to today's standards. I will go thru that way too fast. Yes I can add a Micro-SD card to either system for extra storage it's still a main memory issue, besides I'm also going to be replacing my laptop with this.
Now to talk some about the CPUs in the mid and upper end models of these two beast. Surface Pro 3 are running 3 gen intel core chips, i-5 3400u 1.9GHz with a benchmark rating of 3747, and the i7 chip is the 4650 @ 1.7 GHz with a benchmark of 4123. The Cintig Companion 2 are running either a 4 or 5 gen intel i5 @ 2.7 GHz , and the i7 @ at 3.1. As for the actual chip numbers between two to I can’t give a correct bench marks because when it comes to trying to find the actual CPU model numbers being used in them, it’s like pulling teeth other than from what I have read the i5 on the companion 2 is hitting the same benchmarks as of the i7 in the surface pro 2. Now when it comes to the GPUs the Companion seems to be supporting the better intel graphics. Now there is a loophole for expanding the storage on any of these devices, but that would mean getting a Micro-SD card, and you can get an 128GB for about $80.
Some other thing that I think I will like better when it comes to the Companion 2 are the control keys off to one side, when the surface doesn’t have any. Yea you can hook up an external keyboard, or even get and app that has them one screen, but that will take some getting use to. The other thing is that the Companion doesn’t have a glossy sign.
Now this is something that I really get a kick out of. OK, doing art on my Android tablet has two pressure sensitivities. “Touching or Not”. Microsoft is claiming that theirs has 256, and then Wacom is claiming 2048. Now I have my hand me down Intuos 3 and is it has 2048 pressure sensitivities, and I have a hard time telling if I was pressing down at 1034 or 1033, I probably get in confused at 1037. To tell you the truth, 256 is still a lot.
Some of the things that I like over the Surface Pro 3. The bezels are so huge, it’s flashy, and I can easily hide it into my plastic organizer that I carry with me to work. And for the price that I will be shelling out for the wacom i5 128gb, I can get the top of the line Surface Pro 3 for the same. . .price. Maybe I need to rethink this a little, because I made a disturbing discovery a few minutes ago when it comes to buying the Wacom Product. The only place I only seem to can find it is at the Wacom store, and they only seem to accept debit cards.
So basicly for the next few weeks, I have to decide on which tablet would do the best for me in for what I’m wanting to do with it. Maybe I can get your thoughts on it.

I thought about doing it my self, but I don't have any of the right equipment to do so.

As for the high end electronics, I would be happy with an i5 of either on the Companion or Surface Pro. I was looking at the CPU of my older Dell which is running a 2gen i7-3537U, that over all benchmarks 3857, and then compared it to the 4gen -5 that comes with the Pro 3 i5 which benched 3747, and saw it was only off by 110 on the score which I don't think is all that bad. Also I get a 10% discount off of it if I guy it threw work no matter the model, so is I get one, it probably will be the i5 model, but my roommate says I should get the i7 because he feels I would be disappointed after I get the i5. Either way if I get the i7 Surface pro, vs the i5 companion I'm still looking at a $300 difference. Then again I pointed out to him that I got the small 4.6 V-8 vs the 5.7 and I'm happy with that. The color is what sold me.
Also, check Amazon and eBay. You may be able to order what you want and use bill me later to run monthly payments.

If I go with the Surface Pro 3, I will be doing it thew Walmart.com so I can use my associate discount, and split the payments.
I really do appreciate all your input, you have have been a great help.
