Spring evening
Posted 5 years agoIt is late spring evening - about 10:30PM - air is calm, orange full moon rising above the tree line, small buds on trees & bushes are very light green, sky is crystal clear. Some birds are still singing and calling others in the very slowly darkening nite - only dark twilight available in the middle of the nite anymore as summer approaches quickly.
There's a lonely deer on the field and seems to be interested in something and does not notice me at all. Coming closer towards me and then I see four brown hares running in circles very close to the deer, almost looks like the lonely deer wants to join the playful company of the hares, just like Bambi and Thumper. The encounter lasts for a minute or so and then everybody goes their separate ways.
Luckily we have no skunks here...

My long term weather forecast (for the next 9 months)
Posted 8 years agoCloudy and rainy with darkening skies with a chance of snow flurries with sleet. Short periods of icy conditions for the first two quarters - temperature average falling steadily and quickly below +5C. Chance of clear sunny days less than 4%.
Warning for icy road conditions - unnecessary as nobody cares and notices until you are off road with a broken knee or bloody nose etc. Damage done to your car - minimum of 2000 euros.
Third quarter - chance of snow & sleet with icy conditions rise - temperature average around -5C - occasional snow storms with high winds. Chance of extreme cold (-25C to - 35C) variable between 5 to 10%. Will most likely happen on a Monday morning when you are late for work... kiss you car battery goodby. Chance of clear & sunny days about 8%, but those will be bone chilling cold and windy.
Final quarter - temperature average far below what you think it is - chances of runny nose and a month long flu with high temperature fever about 85%. Mostly cloudy with a small chance of rain and snow flurries - except on the 1st of May when probability of snow flurries is 75%.
Warnings: Do not make long plans for the summer of 2018 vacation - you failure rate in doing so is around 98.96%
Chance of summer of 2018 being cancelled about 66%

Enjoyable moments
Posted 9 years agoSitting on a beach, it is night, clear starry skies, no clouds, all alone and almost quiet. Gentle breeze rustles the remaining autumn leaves, lapping of the small waves, occasional creaking sound from the boat that is left on the waters edge.
An owl shrieks nearby and another replies in the distance, now the owl shrieks a lot nearer and gives me shrills down the spine and a small scare. Some small mammal wanders around behind me, but at night in the darkness I cannot see it - a raccoon or a fox or maybe even a deer - cannot tell.
Then the sounds of "civilization" enter my brain once a gain - camera shutters monotonous open.... close.... open... close rhythm, distant car noises and an occasional emergency vehicle going somewhere, jet & turbo prop engines howling as planes arrive & leave the airport some 40 km away and the regular evening traffic from Europe to Japan flying high above. Even higher above the almost innumerable satellites criss-crossing the skies silently, some so faint that I cannot see but still leaving photons etching on the cameras sensor, some so bright occasionally that they outshine Venus.
I'm hoping for bright Norther lights or a bright shooting star to enter the cameras field of view.
Then I wake to the reality - it is getting a bit too cold so have to leave my beach chair and get inside the car and a more comfier seat and wrap some more blankets around me...

Time lapse photography
Posted 9 years agoI've been practicing a lot of time lapse shooting with my camera.
A whole new ball game in photographing & editing and naturally planning.
Think the hardest is the wait - staying and waiting in one spot for multiple hours and naturally during nite shoot staying up real late.
Here's an all nighter:
Night sky - 09/10 September 2016 between 21:41 and 04:49
From dusk to dawn. 7 hour time lapse
North star (Polaris) on the upper right corner.
Some very faint northern lights in the very beginning.
197 streaks caused mostly by man made satellite traffic and three airplanes race across the field of view.
Taken in Nummela, Vihti, Southern Finland.

Little story (as it happened)
Posted 10 years agoStepping out of my work room to go to the other building - it is cloudy and dull and daylight is weak as the sun is just setting.
A bird has seen its reflection on the electric meter box window and attacks it and then flies to the tree branch right in front of me. What is that? I take couple of steps closer - the bird is just about three meters away from me. Damn! - it is a pygmy owl! First thought - camera where the hell is my camera! Second thought I need the flash too. I rush back in to get the camera - 400mm lens is right there but not attached to the body... get the body - remove the lens - struggle with the big lens – ah, it is attached. Now the flash – a bit more struggle there too. Turn the flash on - I remember that the batteries are at the end of their life so it is going to take a bit more time to charge. Why the hell the flash is not turning on - ouch - I borrowed one AA battery for some other thing a while a go... Where's one that I can put in??? Ah there - which way does it go... more curses and finally the flash is turned on. All this took about a minute at the most – painstakingly long anyway. Stepping back out -where is the owl?
Loads of warning calls made by a dozen tits a bit further away. Walking towards them and I see the owl near an old nest box and the owl goes in it. Ah, perfect time to get closer. Tits are really getting brave and are making a really noisy racket. Now I'm about two meters away from the nest pointing it with my camera and waiting for the owl to come out. There it comes and it sits right in front of me and looking straight me! Need to side step to get a clear view of the owl - oh whoa it fills the whole frame and bzzzzzzz and bzzzzzzz and bzzzzzzzz as the camera tries to focus on the bird.... Damn it is too dark for the auto-focus - where is the manual override... and then the owl is gone. CURSES and more curses and even more unprintable words. I NEED a new camera body and definitely a faster focusing lens!!!!! AAAAARRGGGHHH!
