Moving Forward, and What To Expect!
Posted 6 years agoWow, two weeks to the day. That honestly wasn't planned, but I guess I know myself well enough, huh? ^^;
For those of you concerned about my emotional well being-- I'm better. This is a huge lifestyle change for me, but I'm getting the hang of finding my routine and making sure things get taken care of around here. Financially, it's tight, but I haven't even really opened for commissions yet so I imagine things are only going to improve. I don't regret my choice one bit.
I've already been creating, but the artwork has only been posted to my Patreon. The images will be available in a week, for those of you who aren't interested in becoming a patron. :3
I'll be using this last week of June to play catch-up with commissions and owed art. This is not just for my sake, but I feel it's only fair for my wonderfully patient clients before I take on anymore work. Not only that, it will make it easier for me to keep track of my own productivity, audience interest, and how much money I'm making if I start fresh in July.
Speaking of July, I will be participating in Art Fight! My profile is: https://artfight.net/~Blu_Anubiz and I'll be on Team Nightmare! >:D Anything I do for this month-long challenge will be treated as a warm up, not priority, so keep that in mind.
I'd also like to take a moment to welcome all my new watchers! Carmen's pin-up did shockingly well, and the warm reception has been a huge help in motivating me, artistically!
On a serious note, and for the sake of full transparency: people who are bigoted, support bigoted artists/writers, or are otherwise complicit when around racist/transphobic people are not welcome to participate in my art, my raffles, or my life. What people deem as "politics" is my entire existence and the struggles I deal with day to day. I wish I had the privileged to just 'ignore race' and "identity politics", but I don't. If what I'm saying makes you uncomfortable, or you just can't deal with the fact that I am not quiet about who I am or how I feel, you're free to leave. I completely understand, as it's your right to shape your online experience in anyway you seem fit.
Thank you all for your support, your comments, and your friendship. You are all wonderful, and I can't wait to make it rain with sassy OCs, salacious pin-ups, and more!

What's Going On + June Pin-Up Poll

I quit my part-time job after only 3 months. It was a toxic environment due to the owner's 17 year old daughter being presented as infallible. Fairly usual nepotism, until she saw me as a threat and lied about my quality of work, stole my tips, and falsified negative reviews against me.
The owners of course, "Have never known their daughter to lie."
Blind nepotism aside...
This is why my productivity has not been what it should be. I allowed them to overwork me because I genuinely loved the job and my other, non problematic coworkers.
The entire reason we were understaffed was because of said 17 year old tyrant chasing out several employees before me.
I've since removed myself from that hostile work environment-- it was impacting my mental and physical health. Most importantly, it was hurting my creative drive and leaving me with no time to work on art.
HusBeast and I have discussed the possibility of my working on art full time, and that's just what I'll be doing.
To those who are waiting on commissions, raffle prizes, or art trades, I thank you for your patience. I understand how it looks when every journal I write seems to have a new excuse, but thankfully I will be creating again soon.
I'm going to take a week or two to budget, clean, and make sure my life is in order before throwing myself back into it.
This means, unfortunately, it'll be slightly longer before I'm open for commissions. On the plus side, once I am able to focus solely on art I expect my productivity to skyrocket. <3 It will also give me the opportunity to work on some BIG projects I've got planned. ;D
Once again, thank you to everyone who has shown me support during all of this. Your patience and interest in my art is part of the reason I feel confident I can do this.

Posted 6 years agoHey all! I'm back from Reno, and boy are my thighs tired!
No, seriously... I bowled for like 5 hrs straight, holy shit are my thighs TIRED. X_x
Other than the usual aches n' pains one has after leaving a convention, I can say I'm in pretty great spirits! And probably still working some of those 'spirits' out of my system, haha. ;D
I intend to get back into the swing of things, although there are a few obsticles in my way. Work still refuses to hire anyone and we're in need of like... 3 more bodies. This week I'm working 5 shifts, all closing, which pretty much eats up my entire day and doesn't leave me with much room to draw.
I still have 2 paintings in my May queue left, the monthly pin-up (Carmen was our winner! All hail the pirate vixen!), my patreon reward sketches, and a loooooong overdue art trade.
I can safely say the rest of this month is going to be packed, but it'll be packed with art! Yee!
I'm super inspired (as always) from seeing so many amazing artists at the convention!
OH AND
Jackaloo IS SO FUCKING NICE HOLY SHIT GO READ HIS AMAZING COMIC, SERIOUSLY DO IT DO IT DO IT! He was seriously one of the bigger names I met who was an absolute delight. I would totally hang out with that guy!
Also I got to FINALLY meet one of my art heroes and friend,
Wolfkidd! He gives fantastic hugs! <3 He streams twice a week, on Saturdays and Wednesdays, starting at 7:00PM (19:00 hrs) CST. The broadcast is at http://wolf.tv.macrophile.com/. If you like buxom babes, hyenas, mice, rabbits, gazelleoids and-- oh, just check him out! ;D
Overall it was a fun convention! Still unsure if I'll do it next year, but I'll definitely be heading to FC 2020! >:D

BLFC, Blu Updates, & May Pin-Up Poll!
Posted 6 years ago5 or so days away from my trip to Reno with HusBeast! WOO! So that's still on, and trust me I am looking HELLA forward to the time off...
My new part-time hardly lives up to its name. I've been in 6 days this week because 2 people quit-- one of which was a long time coming due to the owner's daughter being a little manipulative shrew, the other was hired with me but couldn't hack the job.
So that means I am a very, very, VERY tired Blu... and tired Blu's aren't very productive with art. Once I'm back from my trip, they won't be scrambling to shift the schedule around my being gone and I HOPE that I will be able to work less. Like man, at least cut it down to 4 days...
Also, for those of you not in the loop or don't follow me on twitter... I have MADE A PATREON! There's not very much on it, yet (oh hai poorly timed work load and art hiatus) but you do earn an extra vote in my monthly raffles, and get to see my art a week before everyone else. Top tier patrons receive an uncolored sketch every month and commission discounts~ Ooo~
But don't feel obligated to pledge! My art will be released to the public, always.
Now, for the real reason you're all probably here...

So HusBeast and I will be at BLFC in May! YAY! It's his first furry convention and my 2nd. We'll be bowling, lazer tagging, and likely drinkin' our asses off. XD Feel free to say hello if you recognize us, or get in touch so we can meet up and fist-bump or whatever. c: I've been looking forward to this trip all year, and it's finally so tantalizingly CLOSE! 8D
Because of BLFC and in preparation for the trip, I won't be opening May commissions until after I return. Instead, I'll be finishing up April's queue and probably re-opening sometime near the end of the month. I intend to have something of money drive around that time, which means really cheap sketch commissions similar to my Kinktober sale. I'll talk more about that when the time comes. <3
My new job is going well, but things are a little crazy right now. 2 other employees quit, and as someone with fairly open availability... I'm picking up the slack. That's another reason for taking my time with the current commissions, as I have suddenly gone from 3 days of work to 6. X_x
I haven't forgotten about Penelope or Vysh, and will be posting a belated holiday picture either tonight or tomorrow. ;D So keep your eyes peeled!

Happy April! Old Business, New Business, Commissions...
Posted 6 years agoHey folks! Thanks for being so patient with me while I juggled two jobs and tried not to die, haha. ;D So what's up with the Blu?
Well, I've completely transferred over to my new dayjob. It's a bit of a pay cut but I'm already much, much happier working there than at my previous gig. I get to dye my hair, wear comfortable clothes, and despite working in a smaller shop it's an incredibly active job so I'm never bored! My coworkers are nice, the customers are fun... so yeah. Everything's comin' up Bluhause!
I've been taking some time to recover from THE GAUNTLET and it's been really nice. While there has been some guilt about the lack of art, I realized how exhausted I was and that I needed a break. I ultimately decided not to complete the Monthly Pin Up for March because I'd rather you guys get a quality art than something rushed for the sake of meeting a self-imposed deadline.
To make up for it, I'll be doing 2 Monthly Pin Ups during April! One of Vysh, and one of Penelope, since they were neck and neck in the polls. ;D
I will be taking my usual 5 slots. I'm open to discussing prices, options, and to brainstorm before then but please realize that I will not be working on any art until the aforementioned date. Now that I'm going to be home more often, it's important that I have structure between work and rest. I love drawing for all of you, and I don't want to end up burned out from art. <3

The Dealer’s den is open, and I’m hanging with Kilomonster at Table 53B in the West Dealer’s Den! Our neighbor is Fablepaint at Table 54! They’re doing live animations and have some great merch on sale! Kilomonster is also offering traditional badge commissions and chibi-fied muscled characters called “Beefies”!
I’m more here to take in my first furry convention and act like an assistant. I’m having a blast! Everyone is really nice, and the people watching is phenomenal.
I also have business cards out, so HELLO NEW WATCHERS!!! I have only just met you and I already love you~ 😘
If I get a substantial (let’s be real, at least (10-15) watchers/followers, I’ll have an After-Con Raffle! AAAAAAA~
It’s been really awesome being able to just cut loose and not have to hide my art or the NSFW nature of it! 🍆✨
Commissions will be open again January 22nd! I’ll be making journals and taking steps to be more proactive about advertising when I’m open from now on!

Further Confusion, Here I Come!

But that means I'll be there too! Woo!
I'll have business cards and might do some black & white sketches not unlike my kinktober pics. I don't know how much interest there's really going to be in my work, and I'm not looking to make buckets of money. I just sort of wanted to finally experience a Con and meet new folks. <3
This is why my commissions have been closed, for those wondering! I've been doing prep work and just recovering from the holidays. They won't open until after FC, which ends January 21st.
If you have any tips, tricks, or advice, I'd love to hear it!

I'm running a two week gauntlet of work > travel > bullshit inlaws > travel > bullshit family > right back to work. Other than the one or two commissions I owe, along with the raffle prizes, I won't be taking anymore orders this year. Part of it is to help alleviate stress, the other is due to the fact that I'm gearing up for something big in January. Something that may require business cards (that I still need to design x.X). I need to focus on getting my stuff organized and ready before then.

Posted 6 years agoHey all! Sorry this is late, I sort of woke up mid-afternoon and didn't realize the time! <3 I'll cut right to the chase and list the winners, because I know that's why you're here. Afterward, I have a few things I'd like to say! So, drumroll please...
I really can't express how much this milestone means to me. I really enjoy sharing my OCs with people, and drawing to entertain folks. I honestly love drawing FOR people, which is why I tend to do so many raffles in between commissions. <3
On a serious note, and for the sake of full transparency: people who are bigoted, support bigoted artists/writers, or are otherwise complicit when around racist/transphobic people are not welcome to participate in my art, my raffles, or my life. What people deem as "politics" is my entire existence and the struggles I deal with day to day. I wish I had the privileged to just 'ignore race' and "identity politics", but I don't. If what I'm saying makes you uncomfortable, or you just can't deal with the rare moment I'm being open about my identity as a black woman, you're free to leave. I completely understand, as it's your right to shape your online experience in anyway you seem fit.
Thank you all for your support, your comments, and your friendship. I can't wait to start working on these prizes! YEE! <3

Posted 7 years agoOkay, I think I’m finally ready to talk about this and what I’ve been feeling.
It really, really fucking sucks to have to beg people to engage with me and my art. Every creative should do their best to not feel entitled to attention—but when I ask my audience a yes or no question and get 2 responses out of a potential 500, it feels really bad.
Everyone doesn’t have to love what I do. Art and style are very subjective. I can see how my OCs and how I choose to depict them isn’t for everyone.
This isn’t about a lack of attention, despite what it might sound like to some of you. It’s a symptom to an even bigger, worse feeling. That my conscientious, very best efforts aren’t as good as someone else’s terrible behaviors.
I’ve tried really hard to always advocate for Artists, Writers AND Non-Creatives. It’s why I always do my best to make sure that when I’m talking to commissioners, or anyone really, it’s a positive experience. Sure, I can come off as goofy and excitable, but I think it’s preferable to the horror stories I’ve heard about lack of communication, nasty customer service, art that never gets done and bad attitudes in general.
Some of my closest friends, even my Significant Other, have all had horrible experiences with unprofessional creatives. I’ve listened and learned what not to do, and I can’t say as I’ve had any complaints. There’s pride in that. But I’m getting off topic.
The harder subject I want to bring up is “Popularity.” Specifically, what I’ve seen a lot of lately with all of this upsetting news and distasteful personalities who will not be named.
What I hear and see from people pouring their support onto unsavory folk is: This creative person, despite whatever the skill, luck and resources they have, consistently provides terrible service, steals money, is abusive/racist/homophobic and refuses to improve.
And you, Blu, are not as good or as worthy as they are.
Yes, that’s MY issue. Yes, these are my emotions and whether they’re right or wrong, they’ve been gnawing at me for a week and some change. I take full responsibility for them. That isn’t to say that they’re completely invalid, and that outside sources didn’t have a hand in them.
I’ve pulled back from people I care about because maybe I am too focused on engaging with folks. I’ve never been one to “draw for myself”. I’m an entertainer at heart. I love doing art, I enjoy the process, but it also hurts to feel like I’m tossing my heart into a void. Maybe there’s something broken between me and the craft and I have to take this time to fix it.
No, I don’t want to be “Popufur” (god that’s so stupid, we’re all just people). Some will think this is just a cry for attention or whatever. I’m just letting the people who care know what’s up with me, and hopefully giving some folks something to think about.
I like this new trend of “retweet and I’ll follow you if you’re a small artist struggling” on twitter. I think it’s a step in the right direction and that we need more of that. I’d like to take part in it, but I don’t really think I deserve it right now.
Anyway, thanks for reading.

November News
Posted 7 years agoI did it. Lord knows how I survived, but I actually did 31 drawings for Kinktober. This is the first time I've ever completed a monthly art challenge.
I should be happy, and I am, but I'm also absolutely exhausted.
There's also the matter of the monthly pin up. The laptop I use my cintiq with got its screen broken TWICE this month, which seriously hurt my ability to do full painted pieces. I was able to do kinktober sketches on my ipad while the laptop was in the shop and I'm thankful for that-- but it seriously cut into my ability to paint comfortably.
So I'm asking-- should I still bother to do a belated Halloween image for Erika? What do you guys think? Comment down below.
I also have to finish September's raffle winner picture, but that's more because the winner keeps forgetting to fill out my form. =_=;
As for October's Raffle-- everyone who purchased a Kinktober sketch will be included. I'm going to draw the winner's name on November 12th, to give myself some recovery time. I really need to veg out and recharge my artistic batteries.

This year I'll be doing... Kinktober Kinkmissions! Rather than only using my characters for this month's drawing challenge, I thought I'd let other people join in! ;D
To make sure I avoid burnout, I'm going to keep the images really simple. Think messy sketches with possibly a limited palette or white highlights.

Well, I've got some fun ideas brewing for Kinktober next month, and I didn't want to make a super cluttered journal, so I figured we'd get the pin up vote done early.
In order to keep the line up fresh, I've decided to let the past pin-up winners return after 3 months. Vysh will be back on the roster next month (November), and Charlotte will return in December.
I've also added a few more characters, so that's fun. There's even a dude! :O
I think for this month, the pin up is definitely going to be Costume/Halloween themed!
