would anyone like a commission?
Posted a month agohello! my life is finally calming down after a big move and my life totally changing in the span of a month. now that the dust has settled i want to remind people that i'm still around, and that commissions are open. bills ARE coming up so if youve been thinking about it, now would be a really good time. the link to my google forms commission application is in my bio, as always. thank you all for bearing with this unplanned hiatus, i have lots of life stuff to focus on right now but im in a reallllly good place mentally and i think everything's gonna be ok.

Posted 4 months agoto digital artists who yearn to do trad art:
keep trying!!!!
believe me, it can be a rough transition, but even if you have never touched real pencil to real paper before, believe me, it is possible. it will feel like shit and it will probably feel like starting from square one, but i think it's worth it.
of course, there are those who adore digital and really thrive in it, im not talking to them, and i'm not encouraging you to give it up (i actually think being able to do both is a very valuable skill), but if you find yourself really drawn to traditional art or you feel really badly that you'd like to make traditional art but you just DONT for some reason!, please dont get caught up in the fear of messing it up, or not buying the right supplies, or not being consistent enough to fill a sketchbook with beautiful drawings, or not being able to unlearn the undo hotkey or whatever it is,
KEEP DOING IT!!!
i really really implore you. if you want to build a good groundwork for enjoying the act of creation, lose the ego for a second and fuck it up!
it doesn't matter what you do, as long as you do it, but i guess i can give a few pieces of general advice.
it is difficult, genuinely, to produce an image with some concrete idea or vision, in traditional mediums. its just that, a skewed line, a new idea for the pose, a disastrous mistake-turned-genius-creative-decision will shift that picture a lot as it gets made, and if you try to fit it too closely youll never get anything done and it will kill the life in the finished product. my genuine advice would be not to think much about what the end product should look like at all while you work. instead, just focus on what it IS. its a lot more fun that way, and you can get more in tune with what the picture youre making needs at this moment, right now. go in with the intention to make "a painting of x" or "a drawing of x and y smoking 12 packs of cigarettes in an indoor climbing gym" but let that just be the starting point, it doesnt need to "Look like" anything, or look, like, good, even. its not really important. if you wanna get more specific with the aesthetic details, please dont just say "it should look like this artist and this artist and this artist's work", try to understand what it is that makes that art compelling to you and why, write it down with immense detail, pick apart everything you like and dislike, until you can actually tell somebody else what it is you appreciate about art IN GENERAL! what kinds of lines do you like, what kinds of colors do you like? what kind of shapes do you like? do you know? once you have that down (it should only take 2 or 3 years to get it just right), it should be easy, in the course of any drawing youre making, to just attempt those things in art that you like, and avoid those things in art that you don't like, with your new vocabulary at your disposal. research and writing is really really helpful, so don't take it for granted.
this all goes for new artists in general i guess, too. sorry, but you guys can really come up with the most infuriating and mind-numbing reasons to ignore and belittle your genuine, innocent passion, its like a hungry dog inside your heart. you know, if you feed the dog, if you really treat it well, it will love you forever and ever, but youre scared, right? scared that thing will bite you if you come close!
i'm not gonna expand on this any further, but seriously, its just about the most annoying and saddening thing in the world. you need to be responsible for yourself. its not gonna kill you to do the thing you wanna do more than anything in the world. jeez, get a clue!

a winter music roundup!?
Posted 5 months agofor a while i was without headphones, and i was tragically music-less for a long time. now that i have a pair again, thanks to the generosity of a friend, i wanna talk about what ive been listening to on them!
I've always sought music that reflects intense emotions, but my taste in music only gets softer and softer as time goes on. i dont know exactly why. maybe i'm seeking comfort from a season that's been really harsh emotionally for me. this winter opened with MFF, and some of the best time i've ever spent in the company of friends. as the season went on, relationships grew and some soured, i spent a lot of time feeling really lonely, stressing out about all sorts of stuff. i dont want to get into it, but its hard to know if i'll even be emotionally functional for days at a time, and i switch chaotically from intensely hopeful to almost deliriously unhappy and sick with dread. there are great things on the horizon though. i'm going to be moving soon, and spring is coming! i wanna point out a few albums that ive been listening to a lot this winter, with that as the backdrop, here they are. if you have any recommendations based on these picks, let me know!
Ichiko Aoba - Windswept Adan and Luminescent Creatures
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1I.....ZXB0IGFkYW4%3D
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgQ.....cJCX4JAYcqIYzv
i'm listening to windswept adan as i write these words. her music is perfect for fantasizing. it just tends to put me into a whole different world, sometimes without even noticing it, i end up in a dream, looking out on landscapes ive never seen before... i only wish luminescent creatures was longer.
Los Thuthanaka (Chuquimamani-Condori and Joshua Chuquimia Crampton) - Los Thuthanaka
https://losthuthanaka.bandcamp.com/.....om=twittercard
maybe the most important living musicians. i wish them and joshua the best, this album is medicine for my heart.
Ryuichi Sakamoto - Left Handed Dream, The Adventures of Chatran, Thousand Knives, Smoochy, Neo Geo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjEV0kk6qZM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvq.....90byBjaGF0cmFu

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVG.....90byBzbW9vY2h5
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeC.....cJCX4JAYcqIYzv
i always listen to ryuichi sakamoto, so this is just the obligatory roundup of some of my favorites of his. theyre all very wonderful, i'll be a sakamotohead till the day i die.
GEZAN - ANOCHI and NEVER END ROLL
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?li.....ofMbEXZWcJqjB4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmI.....5BGbS4PYQmxw9A
this was a sound i was craving for a long time. that's all.
Joni Mitchell - Hejira
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4K.....xWVUpfh4HbnJ7R
an album i would play in the car, if i owned one. i love joni mitchell, sometimes this album is just what i need in a time of crisis.
Jim O'Rourke - Bad Timing
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4K.....ZCB0aW1pbmc%3D
is anyone else feeling awesome rn?
Look Mexico - This Is Animal Music
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Hh.....n1xqHkx5CLdmPT
the vocals are so quintessentially emo on this one that its almost hard to stomach. but i have to admit... i absolutely love it. i need more music like this, if anyone has a good hookup please let me know. i know there is a wide world out there, ive just been too scared to poke my head in for some reason.
Takagi Masakatsu - Private/Public
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3t6.....JIYF_e5FtGbjbc
really incredibly beautiful, it feels simultaneously expansive and yet constrained, as the title might suggest. i also am just really enamored with that echo-y piano sound, as you can probably see from many tracks in the albums ive mentioned. i've heard the rest of his stuff is really good, so i should probably seek it out. this is a sound i'd be really really interested in finding more of.
a list dominated almost entirely by japanese music, predictably, but i think a pretty wide variety of genres too. i hope ppl will chime in with their thoughts and recommendations. this is only a small slice, but all albums that i've really been loving lately. i hope everyone is as excited for spring to come as i am. remember to eat well also, i hope that times are not so hard for everyone.

im working really hard and thinking a lot
Posted 5 months agoyou might have noticed a general lack of activity from me lately. rest assured, i'm really busily working on art. it's just that the only thing i can really show is the occasional commission right now. i've taken on quite a few projects, and in the midst of this i'm dealing with some intense financial stress, job hunting, commission work, life has been really hectic. all the while, i'm brimming with all these new ideas for projects and pieces that i cant wait to get to work on. time is just what i don't have right now though, i hope things start looking up soon!
as for what you're likely to see in the near future, definitely a lot of commission work. i also wanna remind people that commissions are available through the form linked at the top of my profile.
but as for my personal work, it depends on what i feel like sharing. things are slow-moving, and i like it that way. i've been working on a new short comic, so as soon as i get some more time, it's likely that i'll finish that up and have it available to read somewhere.
i'm perusing new mediums lately, so there might be some interesting new shapes, colors and lines coming soon. can't really say though.
i'm doing fine though, besides the financial issues (hint: commissions help!) and creative energy is running really hot. thats the state of the harper as of now, hope to be able to show you new things soon

just a thought
Posted 6 months agoi think the kind of "bread loaf" snout with the wrinkles on the top that Wolves and Rats get drawn with sometimes might be the single most attractive trait in anthropomorphic design please put your hands up if you feel me
