But...no glomping, please. Seriously, random people tackling me tends to set off a bad reaction. My baseline stress level is still triple its usual level. Makes for a spastic shifter, and spastic shifters tend to kick first and ask questions later.
Yes, I'm still doing NaNo. Over 30,000 words and going! I still haven't found the end. I should probably kick it up a notch and find a climax...

NaNoWriMo and Such
Posted 16 years ago18, 429 words and counting. Still going strong! I have no idea what's going to happen, but that's alright. This works better for me. Keeps me interested in continuing the story.
I can't believe I'm maintaining word count in addition to all the papers I have to write for class. Seriously, I don't know how I"m doing it. But I'm getting A's in all my classes so far. Apparently, I'm better than I thought I was. And it really is amazing how much time you have when you're busy.
As stressed as I've been for the last few weeks, I'm slowly atarting to feel better. A pile of sushi helps. Nothing makes Searska happier than a plate of salmon sushi and a slice of chocolate cake.
Anywho, gotta get back to it. For those watching me and joining in the insanity of NaNoWriMo, good luck and keep writing!

So, lately I've been going through my facebook, FA, and a few other similar sites and removing people from the contacts lists. Most of the time, I just don't talk to or hear from these people any more. The rest of the time, it's either someone who spams my feed or has irritated me to the point of removing them. In all but one case, I was totally ignored. And the ONE person I really wanted to ignore my sudden withdrawl of a friend request notices.
And honestly, I have no idea what to say to her. "I strongly dislike you and your inconsiderate, hurtful, and generally ignorant responses to everything I post, the fact that you've turned a good friend of mine into a pussy-whipped, main-stream douche, and think you need to understand that he world does not revolve around YOUR NEEDS!!" seems awfully harsh. And yet...I want to say it. I want to tell this person to get lost.
I'm trying to take the high road here, but that devil on my shoulder's getting her napalm ready for a flame war...
I've flat ignored it, for now. Hopefully she'll just take a hint and GTFO. But part of me really hopes not...

Started on Yiffstar, actually. I was looking for places to post my writing, and HOLY CRAP WHAT IS THIS?! I like it! ^_^

I have no clue. Half the time, I can't stand the drama, some of the stupidity I've seen makes me want to breathe flame, and I've seen angry bulls with more tact. And yet...the majority of people here are open-minded, funny, and friendly. Some of the best philosophical debates I've seen or had have been with other furries.
*What's Furry to you?
Anyone who identifies with animals more than people, and enjoys anthropomorphic art. It's broad, I know. But it's the best I can do where it encompasses almost everyone.
*If someone found out you're a furry and asked you about it how would you respond?
I've already had to answer this too many times. Most of the time, it's sort of a "lol, furries" response. The few times someone started spewing hate about them, well...it devolved into a creationism/evolution debate. And evolution always wins. ^_^
*What are your favorite aspects of our community?
The crossover between furries, anime, gaming, and a handful of other communities. ^_^

lol, truth is, unless they get abrasive, I don't care. And the one that wanted to pick a fight soon discovered I LIKE fighting. I get off on unfolding others' ignorance for all to see. The one time it came to this, the guy walked away red in the face and nearly crying. It made me giggle. (He was a football player to boot!)

A seven-foot black and red scaled dragonish creature with four glowing red eyes, four tall slender ears, gleaming white fangs, and a barbed tail is a lot to expect out of a costume, though.

Just one, a bearded dragon named Norbert.

There's a furry bowling group out here, but to tell you the truth, I've never looked too hard for meetups. My former community college had their own resident population.

Writing Scraps? Opinions wanted!
Posted 16 years agoAlright, so I have a ton of little scraps of writing for the novel I was working on. These scenes may or may not make it into the final cut, assuming there ever is one. Right now, I'm not sure how much further I'll go with this, but if there's enough interest in the characters and story, I may at least continue it here.

Class Begins!
Posted 16 years ago...well, in two days. Totally looking forward to it too. I have my books, notebooks, an ipod, and my pokemon to keep me going. ^_^
Er, ok, that last one is more of a massive distraction than something to help me study, but it keeps me sane in downtime. And keeps my mind off the fact that it's still August, and it feels like October already.
Seriously, I could count the number of days we had over 90 degrees on one hand. And still have claws leftover. It makes me a sad panda.
Ah, well, onto the last weekend of the summer. ^_^ Time to party like the dragon I am!

He is the stabilizing factor in my life. Every time things start getting a little out of control, he calms me down and centers me again.
2. What's the naughtiest thing you want your mate to do?
Cripes, I'm not posting that here. XD I'll give you a hint, though. It involves latex, rope, and about a gallon of lube.
3. How much do you know about your mate?
Considering that this winter we will have been together for 10 years (that's right folks, 10 YEARS!) there isn't much I *don't* know about him.

He's absolutely an amazing lover. ^_^ And he's got one of the cutest butts I've ever seen on a guy.

Damn, since I first learned? I've been writing random stories since I could first pick up a crayon.
2. First drafts: Handwritten, typed, or some combination?
Tends to be whatever material is on hand at the moment. Poetry and some short story scenes start off hand-written, but almost everything I think has promise for publishing gets transferred to my computer.
3. Do you keep any kind of notebook or writer's journal, and if so, what kinds of things go into it?
I have something like four writing journals at this point. The smaller ones are for when I'm at work and an idea strikes, and the larger ones I bring with my on campus. Anything that pops into my head goes in there, philosophical musings, story ideas, sketch scenes, and occasionally real life notes and rants.
4. Do you set any quotas for your work (number of words per day, number of hours per day, etc.)? Why or why not?
I haven't been able to set a quota for two reasons. One, I feel like my writing becomes a chore rather than an art, and two, I feel limited by it.
5. Are you most comfortable writing short stories, novels, or something else?
Right now, it's short stories. I'm working on getting a novel finished, but that's honestly a tough enterprise for someone who has the attention span of a squirrel on crack. I have to focus in short bursts.
6. What's your favorite kind of story to write?
Hmm, anything that will make a reader think, horror, sci-fi/fantasy, and ok, yeah, yiffy porn.
7. Talk about a story of yours that was easy to write and one that was difficult to write, and why.
Hmm, easy? Hard? I can't really compare one piece to another like that. Most of the writing I've had to do for a creative writing class, where it was very much Fiction with a capital F (think Stuart Dybeck) has been tough for me. I just don't do "real life" very well. Everything I write has an element of the supernatural to it.
8. Which of your characters is closest to your sense of self? In other words, who do you most identify with in your own work to date?
Probably Searska. She's a shifter without a past, who doesn't really fit in anywhere. She drifts from one place to the next, is trying to cope with being a dhampir and all that entails, and despite trying to avoid danger manages to run into it on an alarmingly frequent basis.
I can fit in to almost any major superculture (and a great deal of subcultures), I don't talk about what happened more that 5 years ago, I've made so many changes of address in recent memory that I feel like I'm never really settled down, I'm trying to cope with a whole bunch of random life experiences, and I have this odd tendency to get in trouble no matter how hard I try to avoid it.
9. What work are you most proud of right now?
Anything I actually finished. But of the ones I've finished, I'd say probably Soul's True Form.
10. What do you feel your strengths and weaknesses are as a writer?
Strengths, I love dialogue and setting a scene. Weaknesses, I'm not so good with subtle plot lines.
11. Name a few writers who have influenced you or your work in some way.
Laurell K Hamilton, J K Rowling, Neil Gaiman, Jeff Lindsey, James Maxey, R A Salvatore (best fighting sequence writer ever, imho), Rob Thurman, and Kim Harrison. I know I've left a fair few out, but those are the ones who wrote something that really stayed with me.
12. Talk about something you've written that you later found embarrassing for some reason.
I get that feeling about my poetry fairly often. I'll look at some of it months or even years later and think to myself, Dude, what was on when I wrote this tripe?
13. Talk about the earliest stories you remember writing. What were they about?
My earliest ones were about unicorns. Usually pink ones. Heh, I was probably 8 or 9. Yes, I too was innocent at some point.
14. If you knew you would be successful, what would you most like to write?
The same stuff that I write now, really. I'd want to become famous for what I already am, not something else.
15. What inspires you?
Music. I can't function without it. My writing just lacks something when I try to work without something playing in the background.
16. How many projects do you tend to work on at once?
Several. I usually have at least three going at any given time. Most of them are just sketches and end up getting thrown into the "notes" bin, but I try to always have something on my desktop to work on.
17. Who reads your work before it's released to the public? Do you have beta readers, a critique group, etc.?
I have my other half, Zath, read my stuff, as well as a few friends.
18. When you're not writing, what do you do for fun?
Hoo boy, that's a loaded one. I read. I read a LOT. I listen to music, I game both with consoles and with dice, I go clubbing and to bonfires, I surf the web, and occasionally I pull out a Magic deck and play card games.
19. Advice to other writers?
NEVER GIVE UP! The difference between a hobbyist and an author is that one says Eh, I'll never get published, and the other howls DAMN THE REJECTIONS, FULL SPEED AHEAD!
20. What are you currently working on?
Something yiffy. I wanted to see what would happen if I put all of my favorite fetishes in a single story. I have four pages so far. I've, er...had to take a lot of "breaks."
21. Share the first three sentences of a work in progress.
"In the cities of the drow, anything and everything is available, as long as you don't get caught. And while male nobles are every bit as guilty, it's only the most tactless of female drow who are ever accused of even the most heinous of crimes. Most transgressions go completely unnoticed by the other nobility.
Unless, of course, there is a way to use a noble's indiscretion against them…"

Posted 16 years agoA strange dragon walks into the room and looks around warily. She notices the interviewer, quite a lone, and smiles. Just as she opens her mouth to say something, the door opens again and in walks a human. She is tall and lean, with dark brown hair highlighted with fire-engine red. She runs her hand through her short, boy-cut locks and acknowledges the dragon with a casual salute.
"You're late." The dragon says to the human.
"I am never late. I arrive exactly when I mean to." She replies.
"Well, now that you are both here, may we begin?" The interviewer asks, opening a notebook and tapping a blank page with his pen.
What species are you?
I'm a shifter. I was born a bronze dragon, but...well, that's a long story. Suffice to say that I'm no longer just a dragon.
I'm human. Though I have a number of traits that make me more of a reptile, I am biologically considered a mammal.
Who are you?

Question for Fellow Writers...
Posted 16 years agoWhen someone takes a story you wrote and does their own thing with it, how does that make you guys feel? I'm not talking plagarism, more like they took an aspect of your story and wrote their own? (Kind of like a fanfic, I guess)
See, someone did it to one of my stories, and well, I'm not too happy about it. They never asked permission, and in truth did a poor job of portraying my world in my opinion. I pride myself on doing tons of research before I finish a piece, and the person in question obviously did not. It was one of those horrifying moments when you realize that the story you know and love had been turned into a movie where the only thing in common between them was the title. (And it was directed by the guy who made the movie Bloodrayne)
I won't go into detail of what, exactly, was wrong with the story in question. I'm not even going to name names, because it wasn't on FA. I just want to know, how do you handle something like this?
