TFF was AMAZING!
Posted 10 years agoAfter escaping the colder-than-normal clutches of Dallas with some nimble flight finagling, I'm happy to have the time now to say wow, what a successful weekend it was at TFF! Quite the marathon, but the whole convention was a pleasure to be at to serve as one of the Guests of Honor, and I thank the whole staff of Furry Fiesta, and especially
bauson for his unending support leading up to and throughout the weekend, supported by the wonderful
berrypaws who mad to play "Where did JD run off to??" more times than she bargained for! It was a truly impressive and professional act brought by those two and the staff as a whole - so thank YOU, Furry Fiesta, for showing me a great time! And of course,
dantee (AKA JD's Plus One) was, as always, an incredibly supportive partner in everything I did, whether it was helping to prep stuff for me, or running to get food, or being there to support me - thank you sweetheart ^^
Off the top of my head highlights for me include:
- Opening Ceremonies Guest of Honor Wave. Leave a bunch of creative folks backstage and we're sure to create crazy and funny distractions for ourselves!
- Beyond the Masks We Wear. Thank you to EVERYONE who came to my motivational speech. Remember to take stock of what's on your mask, and what you are doing every day to bring one thing from the back of the mask to the front :)
- Flying Saucer Parties. Thanks to everyone who joined Dantee and me at the Flying Saucer to enjoy one of Dantee's favorite watering holes from St. Louis, but Dallas Style!
- Saturday Panel Marathon. From morning through night, practically, was live on stage, and though it all was a rush, I hope everyone enjoyed everything I had to share during my panels - especially the MacGuyver Fursuit Construction entertainment, where I managed to construct a "complete" "partial" in 90 minutes! X3
- Dance Competition. Thanks to everyone who participated in my group choreography. I believe at the end of the day we had a dozen and change performers join me in the opening number, which is fantastic that so many people want to be able to work together! And of course - Uptown Funk. That is all.
- Charity Pie! So while I didn't "win" the bucket brigade challenge to be pied in the face... the charity auction winner guarded his highest bidder slot up to the amount of $700 for the right to be the pie thrower, and had told me backstage that he paid a lot of money for the opportunity to pie me. SO OF COURSE we'll make sure it happens! As an "honorable mention" for the contest, I took a pie to the face, for the kitties! :D I don't know if there's a youtube up there yet, but here's the vine that has been circulating on twitter quite a bit: https://vine.co/v/OQXImQ66Vu0 - I got a faceful of pie, and no, I didn't break my nose! I'm perfectly fine - just a little coconuttier. XD
One ask for everyone who was at the fursuit dance comp as a spectator or as a competitor. Please fill out our survey to share your thoughts on how we did :) http://bit.ly/TFF2015DanceCompFeedback
And that's it! Being Guest of Honor was truly an honor indeed, and I'm happy to have been as much a part of the convention as I was. And I hope to attend next year, March 11-13, 2016! But for now, ANE this weekend is callin' my name! :D

Texas Furry Fiesta and Anthro New England back to back!
Posted 10 years agoI'm so excited for the next couple of weeks, as it'll be con-mania for me! Texas Furry Fiesta in Dallas graciously as the fursuiting Guest of Honor, immediately followed by Anthro New England in Boston sitting in the dealer's den for the first time in YEARS!
At TFF, if you're headin' down south, be sure to catch me at all the GoH-related stuff, plus doing all sorts of fursuit-y things, like the parade, the construction panel, the performance panel, the improv panel, and the dance competition! Sadly won't have enough time to sit in the artist's alley, but I'll have a ton of fun performing for everyone! And be sure to hit up
dantee's set on Saturday night, too, since I'll for sure be there! :D
At ANE, if you're shackin' up north, come by and say hi to me in the dealer's den and commission me if you're interested! I'm going to be doing artwork as well as some other things (which will be a new venture for me, wish me luck!), so I hope to bring people what they want from a wholly different direction than I'm usually known for!
AND if you're going to either, Toon badges are now available! Badges come laminated with badge clip and lanyard! Discount for pickup at TFF or ANE ($25), or have it shipped to you (US $30 and Int'l $35). Interested in one? Fill out the form here: bit.ly/JDToonBadge
Available styles: Hamtaro, Invader Zim, Powerpuff Girls, and South Park! :D
So, really exciting and active stuff furry-wise the next couple of weeks, and I can't wait! :D

Anthrocon AAAAHHHH!
Posted 11 years agoHey all!
Anthrocon LITERALLY right around the corner, and I'm psyched to be headin' over there tomorrow! Looking forward to a lot of good times, hanging and catching up with folks, suiting and dancing up a storm, and putting on one hell of a show for my last ever AC Fursuit Dance Competition as an organizer! Just finishing up the packing now, then whatever sleep I can muster, and then I will be Pittsburgh-bound by bus from NYC tomorrow morning!
See a bunch of you all there! :)

Furry Fiesta! My times there for 2014... and GoH 2015!
Posted 11 years agoWhile getting into Dallas this weekend for Texas Furry Fiesta were challenging because of the storm front ravaging the East coast, I still had a great experience given the abbreviated time that I had at the convention! The space was really awesome given a hotel layout that had a very nice two-story market square feeling, and plenty of fun programming! The con suite lounge area with plenty of food, pool tables, and hangout space was *incredible* and I wish I got to spend more time in there than I did! Also congratulations to Kou and his team for running a stellar dance competition featuring plenty of different faces involved, both on and off the dance floor - so happy to see continued growing interest in the dance space and seeing people from all different backgrounds and approaches being so engaged!
Closing ceremonies was a hoot - with pies flying everywhere, awesome videos (and lack of video, complete with subtitles), and almost an additional $4000 being generated for charity beyond the original numbers during the ceremonies alone! And I was happy to be a special part of closing ceremonies as being announced the performer Guest of Honor for TFF 2015! I'm really excited to play a role for the convention and supporting its fantastic programming! And I'm super excited for its theme: Toon City! :D
As for upcoming conventions for me, there's FWA next month, and I'm excited to run into a bunch of folks there, in addition to preparing feverishly for their dance competition events! But it will be a blast for sure!
Till next time, all!

Another view on dance comps, and it's been a good run :)
Posted 12 years agoHey everyone, JD here!
Normally I’d have posted a con report journal here at this point, so here is quick summary of non-dance comp stuff: every dinner was super special to me <3, best con parade experience ever, and I FINALLY got to suit during the con and at dances and have fun walking around as other critters (thank you to those who gave me the opportunity!) and all that jazz!
But I know talk is abuzz around the dance competition, about people’s feelings and opinions on the dance community in general. It’s no question this is all near and dear to my heart, and I’m always happy to discuss more detail in a more private forum (some of you have reached out to me already). But I wanted to share some facts about the dance competitions and dance community that I hope will echo and resonate well with those who wish to read through.
Many ways to showcase dance
The first fact I want to share is conventions offer many avenues for dance and performance that individuals can take advantage of, whether it be showcase competitions, freestyle battles, free-for-all dance circles and cyphers, group choreographies and videos, dance workshops and panels, and incredible evening- and late-night dances. If there is something that you don’t see that you wish to see, the best way to get it to happen is to go to the convention’s panel/programming registration site and make it! I know that’s what Theome and I did when we wanted to have a dance competition very similar to So You Think You Can Dance or America’s Got Talent at AC 2008, and the show has grown in interest over the years. Those that wish to see a dance exhibition show can surely do the same thing at any convention by going to their website and looking up how to get their event on the schedule!
Different cons, different comps
The second fact I want to share is that different convention competitions elect to use different systems for judging during prelims and/or finals, and that variety is intentional for those that favor one style over another. As long as the judging system is consistent across all performers and enables judges do accurately compare competitors against each other, whether they are side by side or hours/days apart, and the system isn’t inherently flawed, then it is a fair system. The judges themselves may have their personal opinions and have them reflected in their marks/placements, but it is an organizer’s responsibility to get a diverse and competent panel of judges to level out any biases, and many conventions seek to establish a rotation of the panel, be it a GOH, convention staff, organization team, or dancers themselves. This ability is dependent on the pool of individuals that are available and willing to take on the role of a judge, and every convention team tries their best to get a system that works for them.
Celebrating dancer achievements
The third fact I want to share is that there has been a variety of finalists in 2013 alone, including people who have seen a finals floor before as well as those who are new to the scene. Members of the community were gracious enough to assist me in putting together a (hopefully) accurate history of those who have placed in previous competitions: http://en.wikifur.com/wiki/List_of_.....tition_results . Organization teams have certainly requested the help and assistance from those who have been consistently strong performers to make room for others to earn the title, but many leave the option to compete for those who haven’t won that convention’s competition in the previous year. There is a lot of talent in the community that deserves to be showcased and celebrated.
Always trying something new
The fourth fact is that competition organization teams are consistently striving to improve their competition experience for everyone involved, the competitors, the audiences, and their own team members, some of which will work, some of which won’t, but they’re all out-of-the-box ideas to try to improve the event. At FC, the freestyle division was implemented in 2012 to support those who do seek a separate competition for that avenue of dance. At FWA, after an attempt to run it in 2013, there will be a group act competition in 2014 separate from the solo act competition to differentiate the two approaches to dance, since they did not allow groups to compete previously. At AC, the audience text vote was implemented in 2012 two years ago to help get the audience involved and to play a role in the results. At RF, the notion of not holding preliminaries for everyone to participate was exercised since its inception in 2011. At MWFF, the Novice category was introduced in 2013 to make the competition accessible again to beginning and growing dancers, and to promote a community of growth and support. Please continue to offer your feedback and practical ways to implement the ideas, and I’m sure that you will see different conventions trying out more and different things!
Time to pass the torch
The last fact that I want to share is that after 2014, I will be resigning as one of the co-leads of Anthrocon’s dance competition, and that a resignation for Midwest Furfest’s competition is also impending, date TBA (being a younger comp). It’s been an incredibly exhilarating ride to have been there from the dance comp’s inception year, and I’m happy to have been able to help shape and grow the competitions I support with new additions and features that I hope keep the shows fresh and the events accessible to all who wish to participate. A lot of great feedback has been shared over the years, and I’ve tried to balance the considerations of the different points of view to enhance the competition experience. At this point, I’ve brought everything I could to the table and it’s time for me to pass the torch.
I’ll always be more than happy to support any convention’s competition and dance events, and offer my insight or assistance where requested, as backstage manager, as MC, as judge, as a coach for the overall lead, as a panelist, or as a competitor, as I’ve played all of these roles. As always, I’m up for chatting about this kinda stuff since I care about it a lot, so feel free to reach out. With some people already raising their hands to say are eager to help, the stage is set for me (and others if they wish) to spend the next year sharing valuable knowledge and experience, and then to sit back and enjoy seeing where else the show will go and grow. It could be a continuation and evolution of existing themes, or it can be a complete overhaul of the event to something entirely new and different. Either way, let’s give them one hell of a show - I can’t wait to watch! :)
Much love to all,
~JD

Much love to all,
~JD

AC Recap - SO MUCH DANCE
Posted 12 years agoHey everyone!
Wanted to get a post-AC journal up before it got too late! Crazy to think it was less than 2 weeks ago - I feel like I haven't seen everyone in FOREVER already!
AC has always been a bit of a work-con for me, though by choice. I get a lot of pleasure from helping with the main stage fursuit dance competition, as stressful and emotionally draining it can be to through it sometimes. Prelims was definitely a tough go-around this time, despite advances in the technology supporting the system - and despite initial inclinations to bend the rules to be able to end sooner, I knew it was important to stay true to what was communicated and provide a truly fair shot in the context of what we set out to do. The fact that it ran so long is testament to the system's call to remove individual judge favor and hold everyone to top standards. There will be changes going forward to make the prelims experience a more palatable one for all, and all of that will be announced in due time. It means a lot to me that this competition and this community has grown so much since its inaugural appearance on the schedule 5 years ago. And my hopes are that we can continue to evolve and improve it so that it becomes an enjoyable experience for all who are (or who want to be but haven't been yet) a part of it.
Finals have run more smoothly than I ever could've imagined, and it couldn't have happened without the whole team. Shout out to my partner in crime in pulling all this together from the start, and winner of the fursuit division of Floor Wars, Theome - look at what we've done XD. HUGE thanks to my planning, judging, and behind-the-scenes team, Codex, Foxworth, Tzup, Dantee, NEo, Nichole, Koebi, Recca, Kodi, Dex - your efforts in each of your pieces in the process were critical in making sure things ran smoothly onstage and behind the scenes. And Atsu - was a blast having you helping out, and I hope that once you're done tearing it up on the floor, you and others can take on major playing roles behind the tables, because you were awesome. AND was awesome building and performing choreo with you! Crazy to think that we put this together in a week's time in prep for the showcase!
The dinner that happened afterwards took over half that top floor, I imagine, and we gave that poor staff quite the impressive feat to overcome! Next time, we should definitely look to call ahead, but I'm afraid with how much this group is expanding, we might not be able to fit! Having said that, I loved seeing wave upon wave of people climb those stairs to join us in sharing a meal, in celebrating everyone's successes, and in supporting and encouraging each other to keep it all up. This family has seen incredible growth in the size and quality of its population, and it is a true honor to play a role in it all!
Outside of that, I participated in Floor Wars, for the first time. Leading into the con, it was always an idea of mine to try to use up some of the spare JD fur I had and attempt to make a partial, and in June, with some help from Greyloch and my mom, I was able to make it happen in the span of a couple weekend days! It was hard keeping him in hiding until the event, but I knew it was going to be worth it. Walking in for roll call, I loved some of the stares that happened, and some of the murmurs "Who is that... is that JD??" and then daring to respond and surprising everyone with the new look! But apparently people were more surprised when I finally stepped on the floor XD I suppose I just haven't danced a lot anymore, at least in front of the current crew, but that was the first time a lot of people have seen me dance outside of ballroom-ish/swing-ish stuff I suppose, and certainly the first time I had danced all-out like that in a very long time! Watching the videos, I can see why everyone said I had a lot of energy XD Who would've thought JD would be energetic? Hehe... Anyway, was a lot of fun, and huge shout outs to Gale, Ty, and Stevie (who had certainly earned his win against me to proceed to finals versus Theome) - it was a blast battling you!
Aside from that, maybe just a little bit of suiting, not much arting (but got AWESOME badges from Blitzy and Fitzroy!), and when not crazy with working out stuff for the competition, trying to hang out with friends and having a good time.
Looking forward, I've got Megaplex (birthday con!), FurFright (always a fave!), and MFF (more dance competition craziness!) to round out the year for me. Perhaps I'll see a good lot of ya then! Till next time!
~JD
P.S. I'm looking for any good shots that people got of the new JD too! Feel free to link me in a comment here or a note, and I'll be SO grateful! :)

Looking forward to AC and Commissions open!
Posted 12 years agoHey everyone!
I'm looking forward to AC coming up in one short month!
theomeraccoon and I will be returning this year to run the AC fursuit dance competition, and we're excited to see a lot of the dancerfur family coming out and putting their best out on the floor and the stage! Information on rules and signups are here: http://t.co/syEKj8Z3OP . Also, the two of us are going to be competing in the LFO Floor Wars as well! It's crazy to be stepping back onto the competitive floor in the furry arena more and more, but totally loving being a part of it! :)
Also, I have been trying to draw more lately, and it's about time I open up for some general commisisons! I figure it might be good to open up for a handful of AC Badge Pre-orders, for pickup at the con at any of the dance events. And then I can open up for a handful of non-badge commissions too to work on! Information on pricing is posted here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/9054385/

NY AIDS Walk this Sunday - support me by making a donation!
Posted 12 years agoHi everyone!
I have registered for AIDS Walk New York and am so excited about the event! I want to do as much as I can to make a difference in the lives of people living with HIV and AIDS. I have set an ambitious fundraising goal and I need your help reaching it!
AIDS Walk New York, the world’s largest single-day AIDS fundraising event, benefits GMHC and more than 40 other AIDS service organizations in the tri-state area. GMHC is the nation’s oldest and most comprehensive AIDS service organization, serving approximately 15,000 people living with HIV and AIDS each year. The organization reaches countless more locally and nationally, through its prevention and advocacy work.
Although there has been some success with drug treatments and their ability to prolong the lives of those living with HIV/AIDS, they do not work for everyone, nor are they accessible to everyone. These treatments can take their toll physically, mentally, and financially. I am also concerned by the alarming rate of new HIV infections in the New York City youth. There remains an urgent need for comprehensive prevention programs that serve youth with diverse language and cultural backgrounds. The money we raise at AIDS Walk New York will help those in need living with the disease while supporting vital prevention efforts in New York City and beyond.
I would be so grateful your help. Please sponsor me for AIDS Walk New York. Just click on the link below to visit my personal fundraising web page. It’s quick, easy, and safe to make a donation online with a credit card, debit card, or PayPal. After making your donation, you may be able to double your donation with a matching gift! Please consult your human resources department, or use the matching gift search engine on the AIDS Walk New York website, to find out if your company has a matching gift program!

If you can help, thank you for supporting AIDS Walk New York and for helping put an end to this epidemic.

FCN Recap!
Posted 12 years agoSaying FCN was awesome is definitely an understatement, but will give it as much justice as I can! HUGE thanks to
theomeraccoon and
matrixcodex for assemling the most awesome of room blocks together! So many fantastic laughs shared by everyone and all the time! For
dingoroo's pleasure:
So many LEMONS!
Thursday night last-minute choreo pow wow with
sadariuswolf hangin' outside
dantee's DJ set was a ton of fun (huge thanks to
floe for cautionary tips!). Then Friday, was able to run around in suit and have fun with peoples, in addition to havin' a frightening dance prelims experience - my head bandana falling in front of my eyes at the beginning of the prelims XD
Saturday was a blast hangin' with Dingoroo at the most awesome Artist's Alley table ever :) I even got a fully unexpected visit from
himynameisbuddy and his new toy... Perhaps this is a good way to keep him quiet for a bit ;)
Of course, Saturday was capped with a truly awesome Fursuit Dance Competition, run by
huscoon! Big thanks to Dantee,
coyotesnack, and
camo_husky for being awesome judges, and HUGE props to
atsufawx and
spazz ;) for taking 3rd and 2nd, respectively. And of course, to Sadie, really awesome job partnering up again to pull off an awesome comeback performance this year! ^^ I also enjoyed seeing Theome's and
madius's duo routine and am excited to see what's in store for group choreos in the future! Was always my big thing to bring into the dance world for our community!
And Sunday, was sad to star tseein' a buncha people go, but there was plenty of awesomeness performin' around outside my own suit, as it'd been a while since I tried another character out! Major thanks to Dantee and
G0lDchymera for lettin' me romp around! :) And of course, can't forget awesome the Blindfold Drawing Party for
thedoggygal in our room! So many people showcased their artistic prowress!!
So all in all, tons of goodness at the con, and it was awesome to do as much as I did - and to see
greyloch havin' a great time hangin' with everyone and starting to do his own things! ^^ Looking forward to the next time for everyone!

Posted 12 years agoHey everyone!
Just wanted to give a quick update here since I haven't posted much here save for stream commissions and such!
So glad that everyone seemed to have fun at FWA on the whole - wanted to go, but watching my money a bit more and balancing with the ballroom competition schedule (had a dance competition of my own that weekend too). So impressed with the dance routines I was able to catch on YouTube! HUGE props to
kwik on amazing work with the group choreo - it's everything I've ever wished a group choreography to be!
For updates for me, I'll be heading to USA Dance Nationals in Los Angeles next weekend - been training all year for it, and although we'll be competing against very stiff competition in our events, my ballroom partner and I are happy with the progression of our dancing and are going to cap the season with a bang!
greyloch and I will have some extra time while in LA and will look to enjoy the sights when I'm not dancing!
Con-wise, I'll be headin' to FCN next, and super excited to see everyone there! Nervous about stepping onto the dance competition floor again - the talent out there is astonishing! Outside of that, hope to do a good amount of hanging out, drawing, and dancing for fun while out there!
After that, I've got a few trips for work taking me here and there, but will also be going to Wild Nights at Robber's Cave State Park in Oklahoma! I haven't been to a camping con since Camp Feral in 2007, so I'm really psyched to try something like that again! One day, I definitely gotta make my way back up to Canada for Camp Feral again, too! One trip at a time...
Anyway - that's my update today! Take care everybody!
HUGE props to
kwik on amazing work with the group choreo - it's everything I've ever wished a group choreography to be!For updates for me, I'll be heading to USA Dance Nationals in Los Angeles next weekend - been training all year for it, and although we'll be competing against very stiff competition in our events, my ballroom partner and I are happy with the progression of our dancing and are going to cap the season with a bang!

Midwest FurFest 2012 was AMAZING
Posted 13 years agoWas an awesome weekend, highlighted by some good times shared with good friends and the most amazing fursuit dance competition I have seen to date!
Arrived Thursday, but without JD in tow since the bags didn't make the plane, but still had a nice time going down to the dance and hanging out with folks! Hopefully next year I can arrive a bit earlier and with everything on hand so that I can enjoy the day more fully!
Most of Friday was spending a nice day in Downtown Chicago with
greyloch walking through Millennium Park, all the way down to the planetarium to get a nice view of the Chicago skyline, capping the trip with a fantastic dinner at Bin36. Then it was time to hop on the rails to get back to the Fursuit Dance Competition preliminaries, which had a record-breaking 50+ competitors participate. To narrow down to 21 acts (1 over the original 20) was an incredibly difficult process for each of our judges, needing to cut 3 out of every 5 individuals. Ouch. Really crazy how far this community has come along and grown and improved! Spent the night hanging out with some cool folks - and for those in
alshline's room, we must get that Cards Against Humanity white card written in: Fatal Menstruation.
Saturday was highlighted by a fun 3rd floor view of the fursuit parade with snacks and drinks at hand (thank you,
dantee!), a nice dessert outing to a delicious creperie (thank you,
kalendil!), an incredible display of floor wars (thank you,
last-fur-one!), and a fantastic group of individuals who stepped up to do the group choreography for the opening number of the dance competition! Pizza party in the room was fun - had a few good groups come in and out, but by the time that it was over, I was SO ready to crash in prep for the next day - apparently I was asleep shortly after everyone had left!
Sunday was our rush day - had to leave shortly after closing ceremonies, so didn't get to say proper bye's to everyone... but to focus in on the super positives of the day, I cannot believe how incredible the dance competitions have become. The community's talent growth in size and quality is astounding, and I wish I could've seen the showcase performance of everyone that had participated and prepared, because I know it would have been just as breathtaking as our finalists in the competition. Everyone did such an amazing job, and many congratulations to
doryuu for his stellar 3rd place performance,
ikato and
atsufawx for their mind-blowing duo piece earning 2nd place, and
skyryd3r for wowing the crowd and achieving a well-deserved 1st place! And of course, thank you for everyone who had participated in the group choreography - an fantastic video here!
Following that, it was pack up and pack the car, and popping by closing ceremonies - many thanks,
kodipup for the wonderful plaque of recognition - and then hitting the road to head out to Minnesota!
Will be spending some nice relaxing days off up w/ my partner and to celebrate Thanksgiving tomorrow night before heading back to NYC to celebrate the holiday at home. All in all, an amazing time - wish it would never end, never enough time to see everyone or do everything, but can't wait to see what's in store for next time! :D

See you all at MWFF!
Posted 13 years agoJust getting ready for work on my end - it's been a busy week to try to prep for the vacation coming up, and will continue to be so today! But just wanted to give a holler out on the journals here as a final word before heading off into the office!
Thanks to all who commissioned me and for supporting me! If you'll be at MFF, and I drew a South Park badge for you, I'll have it at the con, just come by any dance competition timeslot and pick it up! :)
Looking forward to the dance competition, to hanging out with a lot of friends, and having a good time! :)
