What's Stopping You?
Posted 9 years agohappy early morning coffee talk (and wb to FA, lol). I've been feeling really great and motivated lately, and I just wanted to have a bit of a serious discussion with you guys. I always seem to get great feedback when I talk about things like this so I'm really curious to see where you're all at.
Where are you at in your life right now, emotionally? Do you feel like you're on the right path and like you've got a purpose? I know 'purpose' is one of those things people roll their eyes at, but personally I think it's very real. I'm not a religious person but I do believe that everyone has a 'thing' that they were meant to do. It doesn't need to revolutionize the world, it can be anything. What are you passionate about? What excites you when you think about it? If money were no object, what would you be doing? You don't necessarily need to answer in the comments, but I think these are really important questions to ponder.
I see a lot of videos and books and articles about how to pursue your passion and how to be successful with it, but I think that a bigger issue is that a lot of people don't even know what that passion is. There are so many doors and (for me, at least) it's terrifying to have to choose just one, knowing that the rest will inevitably close behind you. But it's important to remember that if we don't choose, then none of them are explored.
I've had two doors that I've been eyeing for a long time: art and fitness. For a couple years I've been peeking into one with my foot in the other, trying to get the best of both worlds. Art was my first passion and something I do currently full time, and I'm really grateful and I love what I do. But I've always flirted with health and fitness. I'm sure if you are even reading this then you've read similar journals I've written before about my trouble choosing. But then I remembered that quote (from Johnny Depp I believe?) "If you love two people at the same time, choose the second. Because if you really loved the first one, you wouldn't have fallen for the second.” So I pretty spontaneously applied to university for Kinesiology, and now that I'm accepted and I've made that commitment, I've discovered more focus than I've had in my entire life. I understand you can have multiple passions, like I don't need to cut out art or anything now that I've made my decision, but there's been such a huge paradigm shift now that I know which I'm going to committedly pursue.
I know everyone's situation is different. Some people don't even have two passions to choose between. But personally I believe there's something everyone has flirted with at one point or another. It might sound a little reckless, but I honestly think you should just do that thing. Even if you're uncertain if it's right for you, stop trying to plan everything and be 100% before you commit and just jump into it. You might end up realizing it wasn't right for you, but at least you'd know. And I almost guarantee you'd find your true purpose in the process. I understand it's more complicated then that, but if you're unhappy, then honestly what is the point of staying where you're at?
I'm a problem solver by nature, so when I became unhappy, I made a list of everything that was making me feel that way. Then beside each problem I wrote as many solutions as I could think of. It made me realize that all of my issues stemmed from the same problem. I really recommend you guys trying this if you're unhappy.
ANYWAY goodness I could talk about this forever. I just finished a very short book from John. C. Maxwell "How Successful People Grow" and I definitely recommend it. It's got questions at the end of each chapter that really engage you and make you apply it to your life rather than just mindlessly skim through the pages. SO YEAH. Check that out.

University Update
Posted 9 years agoSo remember a month ago when I made a journal talking about how I was considering university? Well I thought I had until June to apply, so I did some research, talked about it, weighed out my options, and then realized that I only had a week to submit my application before the deadline. So I basically just said 'fuck it' and submitted my application for the Kinesiology program without driving myself crazy with the details. It's such a huge commitment, a huge load of debt, and there's not even a guarantee that I'll find the type of job I'm looking for, but I was just sick of debating it back and forth in my head. The reality is that I want to pursue this health and fitness thing and bogging my mind down with 'what ifs' was only going to keep me in my comfort zone.
I literally just found out that I was accepted. o__o
The whole month I've been very calm about it, not wanting to get my hopes up just incase, and now it's kind of... well, it IS official. Holy shit. I'm going to university again. I literally never thought I would be saying that after my experience a few years ago, but... geez. I've got so many mixed emotions.
So this fall I'll be attending university full time. I haven't quite worked everything out yet (I really just wanted to take things one step at a time), but I'll probably wind up getting a part time job this summer to help gather some money. I plan on continuing to take commissions until then, and then I'm sure my art will slow down quite a bit. I'll still be drawing and creating art because I'm passionate about it, but I'm excited to pursue another passion and let art become a hobby again.

University?!
Posted 9 years agoOh man. So, I've always wanted a particular lifestyle for myself. I want to be able to afford to raise a family, buy a home, yatta yatta. While I know art could get me there eventually, I've realized that I really need to not only put myself in an environment where I'm around other people, but I need to pursue something related to health/fitness otherwise I know I'm going to regret it later.
Going back to school is always something that has been appealing to me. I've looked at all of the 1-2 year college programs in my area and unfortunately all the ones that look remotely appealing don't really give me anything in the way of qualifications, or at least not the qualifications that I wanted. University has just been totally something out of my league, so I never really considered it because of the price and the fact a bachelor's takes FOUR YEARS. I went to university for one year in 2013 (dropped out because it was hella expensive and I didn't like the program) and I've hardly put a dent in my student loan and I have zero to show for it, so I've been extremely intimidated ever since.
That being said, right now, not finishing university is my biggest regret. Every time I think about it I get a knot in my stomach because it's something I wish I pursued when I was just out of high school. I'm 22 years old now and most everyone from my senior year are graduating this summer. I feel like I'm so behind. I won't be finished until I'm 26 which is really scary for me. Not only that, but since my boyfriend and I have been together, I've only ever worked from home so I've been able to work around his schedule very easily. I know committing to university for 4 years plus fitting in any commissions I can to help pay for it would be really hard on the both of us and something that we're not used to, but I think each of us gaining some independence would be a good thing. I couldn't afford university before because of my family's income at the time (even though they didn't assist me at all, I still couldn't get the full amount for my loan), but now that I would be considered an independent as I live on my own, I think I would be able to get enough to support myself.
I really love the idea of working for a health and fitness magazine or company of some sort, so I've been heavily considering a Business degree with a minor in Exercise Science. I figure that with that degree I'd be able to apply it to either another company or if I wanted to grow my own business, which gives me the kind of flexibility that the college programs didn't.
I'm both excited and terrified at the prospect of starting all over. I literally haven't been able to sleep for days since I've talked to my boyfriend about it. GAH.
ANYWAY YEAH just had to talk it out because ahhhhh so anxious!!

Sketchin (early mornin arttalk)
Posted 9 years agogooood morning lovelies!
I've been FINALLY trying to get into the habit of sketching every day. Like I really don't draw nearly as much as I should which is a total shame. Literally what I upload here is p much all I do (except for some gesture drawing a couple times a week maybe), and I know that contributes to some of the stiffness in my work and the lack of creativity I've been feeling. In my year of university we needed to fill our sketchbook by the end of the year, and I got really good at sketching every morning, and I remember how loose and creative I felt by the end of it. I just see some of my favourite artists post sketch dumps and I'm like "holy shit how do you manage all this between commissions/also how do you even have the ideas to draw this stuff" so I think to get to a more professional level I need to stop worrying so much about theory and fundamentals and just focus on practical skills that will be literally translated into my day to day work.
I think I'm going to try improving from the ground up, meaning I'm going to spend a month or so really focused on sketching, another really focused on line art, another really focused on shading, and then another for backgrounds.
So I actually think I might make a commission theme out of it, like after my current queue only take sketches, then only lined/flat coloured pics, etc.
how often do you guys sketch? Is it a habit you made yourself acquire or have you just always done it?

- A customized game plan of what activities you should be doing to get closer to your specific art goals.
- I answer any of your questions relating to art and techniques.
If you're interested, it's $20 and we communicate via notes, email, Skype messaging or whatever else works for you for an hour or so (however long it takes). I'm available to do some right now, but can also schedule them for a later date/time. If you want a slot, comment here or note me so we can arrange something. :)

ANNOYED + fb or tumblr?
Posted 9 years agoEDIT: THANKS based on all your feedback I'm going to go with tumblr. :)
God I've been trying to be very productive with art but my Cintiq has been lagging an absolute ridiculous amount. I've been gritting my teeth and trying to draw slowly but I'm honestly about to lose my shit and smash it. v_________v
I'm sure it's my laptops fault because it's fairly old, but my Cintiq doesn't work with my desktop computer so I might have to say fuck it and go back to my Intuos 3. It's just been really slowing down my process and I can't have any tabs open or god forbid have a video running to watch while I draw. Even when all of my tabs are closed there's still lag, just... slightly.. less. So I'm sorry for the lack of art, I'm trying!
On another note, I'm in the middle of creating/reviving an art challenge page! I'm not sure whether to do it on tumblr or make a Facebook page, but I've got a lot of really cool ideas that I'm really excited about. I made a really comprehensive guide for studying so I feel really motivated and organized finally.
SO would you guys rather me revive my tumblr blog where I create art challenges, share tips, create tutorials etc. or would you prefer a Facebook page? (I think Facebook would be easier for followers to keep tabs on because you can get notifications whenever I add content to the page, and it might be easy to lose track of posts on a tumblr dashboard) BUT YEAH let me know what you think!

Posted 9 years agoHI I'm in a good mood because I'm wrapped up in the coziest blanket ever with a delish coffee ahh~ life is good. None of this is really important so don't feel obligated to read!
Just wanted to have a little conversation with you lovely people! How are you??
DIET STUFF
I've been feeling pretty excited about life lately. I've been following a "IIFYM" (if it fits your macros/flexible dieting) plan for the past week, which means I count my calories and track the macronutrients of the foods I eat. For those curious, I'm eating around 1300 at 30f/40c/30p. I've been seriously enjoying the flexibility and I haven't found it even slightly difficult. Definitely a sustainable plan, and I'd recommend it to anyone trying to change their body composition. I've been tracking everything on My Fitness Pal (add me! http://www.myfitnesspal.com/profile/motivatekait) and to figure out how many cals/macros you should be eating, try http://www.iifym.com/iifym-calculator/
It really helps change my mindset about 'clean eating', and I realize now that the whole aspect of clean eating was what made my relationship with food a poor one. Labeling some food as 'clean' means the rest is considered 'dirty', and I had that mentality where if I had any amount of 'dirty' food I had completely ruined my day. But with IIFYM, if I'm craving chocolate or pizza, I can find a way to fit it into my macros. It's really helped give me balance and stopped me from demonizing certain foods. That being said, it's still important to try to hit your micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) so I avoid filling up my macros with Poptarts. ;) With healthy food you get a much bigger bang for your buck anyway. SO YEAH TRY THAT. Also just picked up a bunch of equipment yesterday so I'm gonna try lifting today yeaaaa!
ART STUFF
I got a $25 gift certificate to a local art shop for Christmas and I just bought a nice tan papered sketchbook, a really vibrant white pencil crayon and a set of coloured ones. I realized how much I MISSED using coloured pencils omg. I absolutely love them. I feel like I have so much control and forgot how much more immersive it feels compared to digital art. I really love the way the white looks on tan paper, too... I've done some figure studies and added a lil hint of white for highlights and it looks great.
I'm trying to get back into doing more studies and experiments, too. I have been REALLY wanting to try 'sketch lifting', which if where you paint your pic in greyscale and then you can make it transparent, add colour underneath so it's like already shaded, and then you can lock opacity and colour the shadows/lines easily. (google KNKL sketch lifting for the vid tutorial). I think it can only be done with Photoshop though, which means I need to get a VGI cord to try and hook up my laptop a as a monitor and then see if my comp even still works and THEN buy a monitor ~__~ But once I've got that figured out I'll be able to livestream, make youtube vids, make cool things with Photoshop... ahh <3
/rambles
Have you guys tried/do you follow IIFYM stuff? Have you made any awesome art discoveries recently that you'd like to share? I really want to experiment with my style and maybe go a more painterly route... HMMM~

POLL... please vote!
Posted 9 years agoHey guys!! I'm interested in different ways I can incorporate both health/fitness and art into a living. I'm considering getting an education in nutrition/exercise where I can coach people to lose weight, gain weight, or simply be healthier.
I'm also in the midst of seeing if my desktop computer works, then hopefully I can finally set up a youtube channel for art education and also find a better more interactive way to host classes for you guys (including livestreams where I can talk with you guys and you can watch me draw/study alongside you).
>> HERE IS THE POLL: http://goo.gl/sn3iha <<
If you want, I would love to hear how much you would be willing to spend on a health coach. I'd create a meal plans, exercise routines, and have weekly check-ins with me to see what progress you've made for the week, as well as offer support for difficulties you may be facing during the transformation.
Thank you so much for voting, I really appreciate it!

2016 Resolutions!
Posted 9 years agoAs always I am super excited about the new year. There's just so much positive, hopeful energy that totally fuels me. I'm absolutely confident that my life is going to take huge leaps in 2016!
In regards to my health/fitness journey, I plan on making regular updates to my fitblr: http://motivatekait.tumblr.com/
Health/Fitness:
- Lose between 10-15lbs. Drink 2L of water a day, at least one green tea a day, a cup of hot lemonwater as soon as I wake up, create weekly meal plans, follow my 80/20 system (here)
- Do the splits
- Complete 10 Day Sugar Detox (here)
- Workout 5 days a week (20min hiit/cardio, 40min strength)
- Try one new recipe from my Whole Foods cookbook every week.
Art:
- Attempt 10 different styles in an attempt to refine my own.
- Complete one personal piece of art a month.
- Complete every activity assigned in all three of my classes (Anatomy, Colour/Value, & Backgrounds/Composition)
- Create new characters to draw and experiment with.
- Create more thorough backstories and plots for existing characters.
Everything Else:
- Finish getting my damn license. (I should have had it this year but damn out-of-province ID prevented me from taking the test)
- Get my passport renewed.
- Get a fulltime job at a gym.
- Complete NaNoWriMo
- Read every night before bed.
In addition to these, I'll be creating monthly and daily goals that correspond to my yearly ones.
Tell me what your resolutions are! :) Cheers!!

life n such!
Posted 10 years agoHELLO ALL
so little life update because I like sharing my revelations and such with you guys! I've just moved into a new apartment which I am loving. Picked a terrible time to move with that hit to the wallet and christmas coming up but I think I'll be okay ~____~ Otherwise I'm going to take my drivers test on Wednesday (kill meeeeee) and I've also been trying really really hard to get a job at a gym (specifically Goodlife).
For those of you who know me, you'll know I'm a total stressball but I think I've found a solution. I'm incredibly passionate about both art and health and fitness, but I've been a little lost in regards to what I specifically want to do with either of them. I've done art fulltime for 2+ years and part-time for like 4 years, so I think I want to step away from art for a little while. I had a revelation a couple weeks ago when I realized a job at the gym might be perfect (I'm surrounded with that environment, free membership, more stable income, chance to meet new people, I'm great at sales, doesn't require school, etc) so I'm going to try and pursue that and see if I can work my way up. If I get this job, not only will it help me to satisfy my passion for health and fitness but it'll allow me to have the opportunity to draw personal art without any real intense pressure to focus on humans or even kill myself studying. I'm really excited over the prospect of drawing cool pics of all my cutiepies and trying cool lighting and playing with styles and being able to take commissions for supplemental income.
ANYWAY it just seems like it'd be awesome. I'm sure it wouldn't all be perfect, I'd have to adjust to someone elses schedule instead of my own for once and to try and fit art in between work and my boyfriend might be tricky, but I'm pretty excited about it anyway.
hope your guys' holidays are going swell!!

Commissions CLOSED
Posted 10 years agoHIYA! so not doing commissions is wreaking havoc on my bank account so I'm gonna open back up for commissions earlier than anticipated.
I'm ONLY ACCEPTING HUMAN/HUMAN-ESQUE CHARACTERS. This includes humans, 'nekomimi'(human faced characters with ears and tail), elves, orcs, demons, etc. So long as the character has relatively human features (even if monster-like), I'll accept it. :) I can also make your furry character into a nekomimi!
FULL BODY, FULL SHADE (example) $50
WAIST UP, FULL SHADE $35
COLOURED SKETCH (example) $15
if you want another character, bg or any variation, I'll give you a price quote :)
(as you can see these are way cheaper than my normal commissions!! I'm really in a desperate spot for money but I really don't want to give up on my human art, so I'm really appreciative of all support <333 )
if you're interested in a spot, note me or comment here!

CAREER HELP
Posted 10 years agoEDIT: I thank I have an idea, thanks for your input guys!
HELLO hope u all are doing well
I'm still on "personal hiatus" currently and I've been really enjoying myself, finally getting an opportunity to make art for myself and spend more time on studies.
BUT, I'm not going to lie, I'm worried about the lack of income. I'll have to return to furry commissions if I can't figure out a direction (which obviously isn't the worst thing in the world, I love working with you guys). I've been working on stuff but the lack of direction is terrifying to me. I'm creating art, sure, but what am I going to do with this? I have a certain lifestyle I want (and I'm going to achieve), but I need to find the stepping stones between point A (current) and point B.
I have a lot of different things I am passionate about, but I have no clear path and without that I'm only delaying my ideal lifestyle because I don't have a set goal to work towards. Art is my main thing of course, but I'm willing to explore different options and see if/how I can integrate art into them. I'd like to try and mix a few of my passions together if I could. Of course I've got basic ideas like "art teacher", or "graphic novel illustrator", and of course all the basic careers I've heard consistently, but I've been trying endlessly to find something that ~speaks to me~.
A few things I enjoy: Art(duh), teaching, health/fitness, writing, environment preservation, animal welfare, gaming/mmorpgs
If you have any suggestions I really appreciate it! Especially if you have specific companys or people I should contact. <3 I'm willing to go to school or move locations!
HIATUS -- PLEASE READ
Posted 10 years agoHello!
Those of you who have read my recent journals will know I've been having some issues with art lately and I've really been wanting to get back into drawing humans. So, I've finally took the initiative and created various profiles under my alias "Koyt".
I'm going to take a break from commissions all of November and focus really intensely on studies and personal work. When I return, I will be greatly limiting my furry commissions and instead offer mostly human/human-esque commissions (for a discounted price). I obviously need a steady income so I'm not sure how long I'll be able to sustain offering human commissions on a furry site, but I'm going to try really really hard to make a living drawing what I'm really passionate about.
I'm SO grateful for those of you who have been (and will be) supportive. Any sharing, reblogging, following, commissioning, etc. is extremely appreciated. <3
