Fizzle
Posted 17 years agoThis can be so frustrating sometimes. My brain works faster than the rest of me can keep up with, There are times I find myself scrambling to get my thoughts on paper as they pour out of me.
But the real kick in the butt comes later, when I try to organize those thoughts and start weaving them out into a proper story. I have the stories all up here *taps teh noggin* but apparently I'm not a very good story-teller. I know, I know, I haven't posted any samples for any of you to try and give me pointers on. I'm working on it, give me some time.
I think I might use my GI bill to take a few college writing courses. Maybe that will help. I have a hard time finding that balance where there's enough detail to be captivating and draw in my reader, yet not so much as to leave him begging me to get on with the story.
And then of course there's my single greatest enemy. Names. *pulls out teh cross and hisses!!* I'll churn out all kinds of ideas for original people, places, cities, technologies, magics, creatures/species, etc etc all day long or until all my pens run out of ink, as indepth and detailed as you could ask for. Until you ask me what they're called. Ask me that and I'll continually cycle back and forth for hours between staring at you like a deer in the headlights, and beating you for throwing my in the name cage.
For all my creativity, thinking up appropriate, fitting and yet unique and original words... just escapes me. I often find myself looking to outside sources for names. Books, movies, video games, name generators (they all suck tho, just a bunch of random nonsense). This might sound kind of creepy and freakish, but I've found one truly incredible source for names is graveyards. Just walk around with a pen and a pad reading headstones. You'd be amazed how many people have truly excellent names. Phonebooks work too I suppose, but the whole alphabetical order thing really takes away from the randomess of it all. Graveyards are better.
Anyway, I'm sitting here fizzling for names to use for a few places and people in Juno's story, so I figured I'd go ahead and make my first FA journal to rant about it. Thanks for listening! Hope to have some bits and pieces of Juno's story thrown up here soon so I can start getting some good advice from more experienced writers out there.
