So as of yesterday, A friend and I decided to quit our job. We had contemplated quitting for awhile due to this continuous harassment by our boss but yesterdays "talk" if you could even call it that, hit the nail on the head.
A bit of backstory about our boss: Our boss was a short, beta male who had a title of "Alpha" and would use it as a weapon against young girls in a way of having control. Now the workplace was mainly female. We noticed this as we watched his interactions and found that he is much more submissive to the older women who worked with us. He would become overly sensitive to the women's teasing and would occasionally do things to please them. He would also try to make everyone happy by ignoring times where he should be a boss and allows people to get away with it. This is where my friend and I come in, we were the ones cleaning up after everybody and being scolded for small things forgotten.
I believe this harassment started long before I started working there, he didn't really have much an issue with me but my friend instead. But because I worked along side her and she was my friend, I was targeted on multiple occasions too.
My friend was the type to speak up when things weren't right and wouldn't hesitate to stand up for herself or others. He absolutely hated that because in his mind, she had threatened his title as boss. We had an incident a couple months ago involving a lazy coworker who we have repeatedly expressed to this so called boss and every time, nothing was done. My friend being the person she is, took it upon herself(with consent from the coworkers around her) to write a note to this coworker to clean up after themselves and had left it on the fridge for him the next morning. When our boss saw it, he blew a fuse and took to email aggressively writing how "unprofessional" it was and how it was disrespectful to the coworkers and somehow his own work ethic. Pretty much, he works good so he gets a pass at having people clean up after them. I also have to note that this coworker is in no way special, they have the same title as my friend and I so there should not be any title making them so. My friend has expressed to him straight up that she had taken the initiative to tell the coworker since she had seen nothing was being done. In the end there was nothing that came out of it other than her getting written up for "Posting it on the fridge"
After this he would passively aggressively bully us into doing really unnecessary jobs and we found ourselves carrying allot of weight for the job title we had. My friend was already talking about putting her two weeks in and me being me, I like plans. We are starting our new job for summer soon so I wanted to wait till then to quit. However that never happened because as of yesterday, It was the last straw.
We were pulled aside after dinner and we were asked about what had happened during Saturdays lunch which was a completely fine thing to ask. We had a couple of hiccups due to few staff and majority of the issues were just waiting on other people to do their job so we could do ours. Well we explained this to him and he began going "I heard some other things happened" and he starts telling us "what he heard" and of course, this was okay too because it not unusual for someone to hear something happened and ask about it. Well..This wasn't the case at all. This wasn't an ask. This was a accusation. He never intended to let us answer his question but instead this was yet again bullying covered in passive aggressiveness. Your probably saying "Well how does that end up being bullying?" Well it didn't end there. As we were trying to explain ourselves, surprised at the sudden aggression and calling mainly my friend a liar even though he was not present in the moment and only "heard" these things, My friend mistakenly comments about the mentioned coworker's uniform not being correct uniform. She mentioned this because our boss had given us shit for wearing a clothing that was similar to the dress code but wasn't long sleeved or black jeans. This was a mistake because this boss had a knack for sticking up for this coworker. That's when he broke more. He began commenting on the clothing we were wearing at that very moment and how wrong it was. Now he has never mentioned anything about my shirt until that very moment and I had worn it multiple times to work so I assumed it was okay. In that moment I was like "Ok well let's try to simmer this down. If he doesn't like my shirt then maybe he would provide another shirt for me to wear" Of course, this was ridiculous cus he in a heart beat told me no. All the month I've been working at this place, I was only given one shirt. This man expected me to wear the same dirty shirt practically everyday to work. I expressed that to him that we didn't have a washing machine at home and we had done laundry at a laundry mat once a month. This man literally looked at us and ridiculed us for washing our clothes once a month as if it was disgusting. Now us as girls have accumulated enough clothing to last us that long until we take everything to wash so it wasn't like we were gross. We were advocates for cleanliness at work and anyone could tell by the amount of bullshit we clean up after him.
At this time the conversation is going nowhere. My friend has a mental disorder where under extreme stress, it becomes unbearable. And this situation pressed into that fact. She had walked outside for a moment to collect herself and calm down and I was stayed inside continuously arguing with this grown man. I realized soon this wasn't going anywhere and decided to let him have it since I just wanted the situation to stop. I worried about my friend and he knew that. That's why he threatened that if I had gone out there with her, I would be terminated. Apparently I have exceeded the amount of call offs and the next time would be automatic termination. Which by the way was just a bluff and that wasn't an actual thing. Me being me, If I was gonna leave this place, I didn't want him to feel superior by knowing he had fired me. So I waited. I finished my job and that night, I quit via email to all bosses. Of course I kept it short. However we did explain a bit more to the other bosses since they deserved a better explanation. Our other bosses apologized and wished us well while assuring us that they would make sure we get paid for the days we worked.
So yeah that happened lmao. I'm not sure when I'll start my new job so I'll be opening infinite commissions till then.
