GO FOLLOW MONSTERELLA
Posted 7 years agoI've made a second account, where I plan to focus more on the developing story I'm slowly writing.
I am adapting current and older characters to fit that world, including Max and Hertz who are currently being redesigned to fit the original species I am developing.
So Pokemon and other fandom stuff will stay here, and new stuff will go there.
I am also going to be hardcore diving into ACTUALLY LEARNING TO DRAW, so hopefully, assuming that I'm still capable of learning, we should be seeing some improvements in my consistency, anatomy, and painting skills.
This account isn't being abandoned. There will still be updates, but I highly encourage my followers to go follow my new account!!
That's Monsterella here on FA!

Ok, I'm done.
Ok, I'm done.
It's not that I haven't been drawing lately...
Posted 7 years agoI actually have been, here and there, buts it's mostly been sketches, and honestly I can't decide which to post here as scraps or w/e so I think I'm going to end up doing a sketch dump.
Otherwise, you can keep up here: https://twitter.com/@0ptimissed

Please go easy on me. I'd like folks to read them if interested (they're all pretty short), but I'm not looking for criticism. I'm not a writer. I haven't written anything else since I was 12 (I used to write entire shitty books).
If you're interested in my characters, give this shit a read, so you can follow along. I know it probably isn't very good, but it's context.
My hope is that, if I spend time writing about something inconsequential like Pokemon OCs, then maybe I'll be able to write my own story one day, when I have ll my ideas in order.

TFWO - A Synopsis
Posted 8 years ago...Totally Fuckin Weirded Out
This is my overview of the Pokemon ranch life AU I'm starting. I have multiple AUs for roughly the same group of characters, and for whatever reason, this one is my latest. Be gentle. It's an outline, so it doesn't exactly read like a story or a script, and is highly subject to change at my whim.
Max has an ex-mate in this one (in the previous she was dead, and the one before that Jolt was created in vitro, so no mate was needed). The two of them got together young, and ultimately grew apart. They split up about 2 years after Jolt was born, with Max going to live with Stern on her ranch, as a ranch hand and electrical wrangler. The two electabuzz no longer really get along and are always tense around each other. She thinks of him as lazy and noncommittal, and he thinks of her as demanding and reactive.
Stern the human owns a ranch in a dry, volcanic region resembling eastern Oregon (somewhere in Alola?). In her fields are many wind turbines and a couple large banks of solar cells. Sharing the fields are livestock that she raises, utilizing the local breeding center for reproduction (much easier and only a little more expensive than natural breeding). She is also a small-time moisture farmer (using fog fences and an evap/compressor unit over the stock pond), mostly providing for her ranch, but selling back any excess to the water district. She hires Max to help with the electricity specifically, and other ranch chores in general.
Max grew up in a rural area (another constant across AUs thus far) and knows a bit about farm life. His first job was in his neighbors’ stables, but the ability to work with electricity was the main reason he applied to work for Stern, as it is just intuitive for him. He and Jolt live in a cozy shack on Stern’s land, just down the dirt road from the main house, near the machine shop and barn.
Jolt spends part of her time with Max and part of it with her mother, who lives in the nearby city. Her birth was unplanned, as Max and his former mate had a tendency to get wasted and had an incident during one of her heat cycles (normally very easily avoidable, but they didn’t have the best judgement at the time). They both quit partying upon learning that she was pregnant and put their focus into raising Jolt. However, with the added stress, their difficulties with each other were magnified, and they broke up when Jolt was only two years old.
Roughly a year after moving to the ranch Max meets Hertz, who lives in town and works for the local power company (as in the first AU). Both are instantly fascinated by one another, as they often don’t see a lot of their kind out in the world. After running into each other a couple times, they get to talking at the bar one night, and eventually begin dating. Max is attracted to her warm, steady demeanor and is fascinated by her past (he would never want to be a fighter himself, but nonetheless he is impressed by her abilities).
A typical day on the ranch starts with feeding the stock. Max rides in the back of Stern’s truck, bucking hay, while she drives the pastures, and her growlithe helps spread the feed that Max throws. After that, there are stalls to muck, machines to tend, repairs to be made, and of course, the generators. Jolt loves to watch Max work with electricity, and the two of them often spend their afternoons together in the machine shop, or even out at the turbines or solar cells assessing flow rates and absorptive efficiencies (Max does the measuring and Stern does the math).
Before working for the power company, Hertz was part of a competitive battling team (as in all AUs - especially the Thunderdome one), but ultimately gave it up after an injury, having decided that she needed a slower pace of life. However, small town life had left her somewhat bored, which is part of why she was initially drawn to Max (and the local bar). She hadn’t had time for relationships before, and now realized that such a thing might be just what she needed to try. When she meets Jolt, and gets to know Max’s paternal nature, she falls in love with him.
While talking about his ex to Hertz, Max reveals that he would have liked to have had more children, and that it was a shame that his relationship with his daughter’s mother had ended. This is when Hertz first begins giving any serious thought to having a family, as she had been focused on her work for her entire adult life thus far, and hadn’t considered it beyond donating DNA the breeding centers.
After a year together, Hertz moves in with Max, although she continues working in town. After some time, they talk again about elekids and plan to make one during her next heat, thus producing Volt. A couple years later, Bolt is also born.
Other characters: Aska the infernape is also a former member of Hertz’s old team, and lives in the city. Ingot the lucario works at the town library. Zuckerman (emboar), Makana (human), Omar (human), and Stoney (machoke) are other town residents.

Might take a drawing break
Posted 8 years agoIDK but if y'all don't see anything from me for a while, I'm probably taking another break. My mental health hasn't been well lately, and I am considering starting to post the story I'm working on, but I've failed at drawing something for each chapter, nor do I have the mental energy to proofread/rewrite stuff. If I do that, I'll probably end up scrapping the entire project. So IDK IDK y'all might or might not see that story some time (is anyone going to even read it? I'm scared either way), and I might or might not stop drawing again for a little while. We'll see how things go with my sick brain.
Welcome to the Machine
Posted 8 years agoSo ok I'm writing this story. It's a post-apocalyptic pokemon AU.
Any interest in that? Should I post it here??
Does anyone read these things?
Is there anybody out there?

I fell into a bush
Posted 8 years agoAnd no, unfortunately, that's not some kind of euphemism. I really did slip on an embankment and tumble face-first into a bush.
So I'm all sliced up, my fat ass broke a stump on the way down, and I'm still finding thorns embedded in my skin.
This would be a great time for whiskey.

Who wants to buy me a second monitor?
Posted 8 years agoI need to be able to watch Brickleberry while I write sad crybaby shit. I am a complex individual.
Not Around ATM
Posted 8 years agoSorry guys, I haven't been around for a while, and I don't know when I'll be back, but I'm not planning to leave. I just haven't had time to draw lately. I'm working full time with a 45 min commute each way, and raising a malinois puppy. Any free time I have is being devoted to chores, my photography business, and napping.
I'm hoping to draw again soon, but I went likely be able to keep up the pace I had when I was unemployed with only one dog.
Just figured some folk may appreciate an update.

Headcanons for elekid/electabuzz/electivire biology:
Posted 9 years agoBecause I can't just leave something I love alone. I have to go and redesign it...
So, to start with… I’ve got this sort of headcanon that the Pokemon breeding facilities use high tech, egg-like incubators to grow new Pokemon from fetuses or w/e. That’d explain why you’ve got placental mammals hatching from eggs… whereas the wild types maybe still do it.. uh… the discovery channel way? The electabuzz family only makes sense as therians (esp. placental mammals), and thus would do the whole mammalian pregnancy thing, as the normal means of reproduction. The breeding centers would use the reproductive materials of compatible Pokemon to create new ones in vitro. This allows pokemon to breed without extended downtime for female fighters, etc. The egg-incubators also accelerate the growth and development of the baby pokemon, allowing them to get a head start upon hatching (this is where Jolt came from – using Max's DNA and that of an anonymous maternal donor). Elekids are the baby form of course, with evolution to electabuzz being more akin to simply growing up and would be a gradual process taking place at puberty (before that point, they'd be elekids but would grow in size as they age). A fully developed electabuzz is considered an adult. Additional note: like most mammals, females do not normally have breasts, unless they are pregnant or nursing.
Evolution to electivire is based on a combination of age and experience. So generally, the 'mon at their highest evolutions will be older than those not there yet. But there will be those who evolve young just because they’ve been working toward it or otherwise have accrued a lot of experience (ie the gladiator types). I also see evolution as a more gradual process than depicted by the games and show, because why the hell not. Otherwise, they’d get the worst rickets and organ failure and just what about the laws of conservation of mass and energy, anyway?? OK so, take Mad Max the electabuzz and Hertz the electivire. She’s older than him, but she’s not OLD. She's just spent so much time training and fighting that it didn't take long for her to evolve, whereas if Max ever gets around to it, he'll probably be kinda old, at the rate he's going. He's healthy and strong but also very lazy.
Electrical abilities would, of course, involve the use of electrical organs. They would have these throughout the body (including the genitals, for added fun), but the horns on their heads would contain especially powerful electricity-generating organs (these are not fully developed in the elekid). They also have specialized glands throughout the lymphatic system for absorbing and converting electricity, such that the more powerful individuals can withstand and even benefit from a lightning strike. Elekids are born able to absorb and process some electricity but unable to produce any. They learn to do this as they learn anything else like walking or talking (as their proprioceptive abilities develop, basically). Parents will stimulate the growth of their electrical systems by administering mild shocks and eventually teaching them to move that electricity through their bodies. There is also something of a communications aspect to their electrical abilities in that they can be used to communicate proximity (similar to echolocation) and/or feelings (often used in battle, between mates, or between parent/offspring). This is often done using the combination of electricity-generating and receiving organs on the sides of the head (the main reason for the odd head shape - other than just fluff, or even a mane in the case of the electivire). The reason being that it enhances hearing (ears being more or less hidden under fur), and because of close proximity to the brain (allowing signals to be translated quickly). There are electrical nodes in the tail(s) but this is not fully developed until the electivire stage, at which point tails can be used as additional weaponry (or wrapped around a mate hehe).
Diet: Omnivorous. Basically can eat anything a human can, with similar nutritional needs, but with the addition of craving electricity. Electricity can be used to provide an energy boost, or to charge the organs on the head for storage or use in an attack. Technically, energy can be absorbed through almost any part of the body, but due to the number and sensitivity of electrical organs in the head, it is often most fulfilling for them to chew on wires or otherwise "eat" the electricity (it can be routed through the sinuses to the electrical organs). This can get young elekids in trouble (or Max, who is just a douchebag) if they damage someone else's property in seeking power. Parents will supplement their diets with some of their own energy. Females have electrical organs along with the mammary glands (as with the entire lymphatic system) for just this reason.
My thoughts about the spurs on their heels is that they evolved (in the Darwinian sense this time) to help with balance and control on uneven terrain or even climbing trees to find prey or get closer to a thunderstorm. Probably originated as a modified toe, similar to the dewclaws on a cat.
As far as my redesigns go, ie. Elekids with tails, electivires with tusks, etc... I see them all as being different morphs of the same species, thus it makes more sense for them to be born with tails than to grow them later, or for the tusks to just get bigger as they age.
Updates will be added as I think more...

Posted 9 years agoI draw elekids with tails because I like them better that way, and it makes more biological sense. Bite me.
