Writing update
Posted 15 years agoJust a small status update to let you know that I'm still around. I've made a few more attempts at writing something, and it is fun at times, even though I usually get hopelessly stuck. The current story shows some more promise, even though it is very far from a complete story. It's more like fragments and ideas right now.
I'm currently trying to follow a recommendation of just working on whatever part of the story I feel like at the moment, instead of writing it from start to finish. At least it is better than not writing at all...

Bad writing
Posted 16 years agoSo, I've been trying to write a story. I actually managed to write a draft of the first chapter, and even better, came up with some ideas for how it could continue in the next few chapters. I even decided on an end, although much of what will happen before the end is very unclear. However, the more I think about it and reread the thing, the less I like it. The plot and characters simply aren't good enough and it will be hard to make anything interesting out of it. This is of course not surprising given my lack of experience in this area, but still disappointing. If the writing would have been bad but the plot promising, then I would just have to rewrite it. Now it feels more like forget it all and come up with something brand new, or go back to playing games.
For some reason, this got me thinking of The Dark Tower series by Stephen King, which I read a few years ago. 7 books. 4000 or so pages. Written over many years. Good start, interesting world and characters, but complicated. However, you know what Mr Big Author does in the last few books? He writes himself into the story in a complicated mess also involving some other of his books or some shit like that. Even worse, before the last few pages of the last book, he warns the readers they might not like the end and that it could be better to stop reading there. Apart from the fact that he was right - I did not like the "end" at all - how could any respected author do that to his/her readers? If you realize the ending isn't that good, shouldn't you try to rewrite it then so there is a good chance the readers will like it?
Grumble, grumble...

Getting back on track
Posted 16 years agoIt appears it's been 100 days since I last submitted anything here, and I'm ashamed to admit a lot of my free time since then has been wasted on nonproductive things. Now it's a fresh new year and maybe the possibility to change things. To get things started, I will try my best to write and submit one chapter of a story before the end of this week.
I have a half-written first chapter of a terrible, terrible short story called "Unwilling Author", and as a backup plan, I could clean that up, but I'll try to spend my time on something better.
I have lots of ideas for stories, or at least beginnings, but actually getting any work done is really hard. I procrastinate too much.

Favorite artists - mostly favorite authors
Posted 16 years agoThe "Favorite Artist" profile field is so limited in length, so I felt I had to do this little writeup to do my favorite authors justice. Please note that all of these authors write a lot of stuff that are marked as adult, and may contain violence, blood, sex and other things that can make stories more interesting, but also not suitable for everyone.
Jackal_Hound,
Strategist and
Boiken get the first spot. All those accounts belong to the same guy. He is amazingly productive and often posts several chapters per day. I would describe his works as enjoyable action stories. Some of my favorite stories of his are
Haunting, Extreme Ways (sequel to haunting) and Daylight (these are links to the first chapter/prologue).
As of the moment I'm writing this, there are three stories in progress that are also well worth to start following: School Supremacy, Gate Jumper and Alliance
Be sure to look also in the Scraps section, for he hides many good stories there.
jeevestheroo is next. He has a very commendable always-happy, ever-enthusiastic attitude. Most of his works are erotic stories, or as his profile currently mentions a few times: "I write porn." Just go to his gallery and see if you don't find anything you like.
Some other writers you'd might be interested in:

Coracleboat I'd like to mention for her desire to avoid stereotypes and thinking about how you can make furry characters less "blatantly human".
ookamkasumi has posted a lot of advice for authors, which looks interesting (but it's very unlikely that I will submit any works in the foreseeable future).
If you're looking for visual art, try some of these:

If anyone is actually reading this thing and want me to add more elaborate descriptions of the authors or to add more, feel free to add a comment.

WANTED: Buffalo Mouse a.k.a. Buffalo Bunny (character)
Posted 16 years agoThis is a character that came up in a discussion with
coracleboat. I half-jokingly said this to try to spice up a very bland possible character/fursona of mine:
octo4ever wrote:A crime-fighting male rabbit-breed cook with sharp knives and a witty personality.
To which she promptly suggested in reply:
coracleboat wrote:A mouse who murders and skins rabbits, using their sewn-together pelts to appear as a male rabbit-breed cook with sharp knives and a witty personality!
Everyone knows that it's a mouse in a rabbit skin-suit, but everyone is too afraid to say anything about it.
Inspired by Silence of the Lambs, I added the name Buffalo Mouse for the character, but Buffalo Bunny may be better.
This actually might have some potential in a story, as an adversary or something. It is not a good representation of myself. I try to be a nice guy.
Coracleboat, would it be okay with you if I or someone else wanted to actually use this character in a story or some art?

Happy 400th chapter, Tales of MU!
Posted 16 years agoI just noted that the 400th chapter in the online story Tales of MU was posted. Congratulations!
It can perhaps be described as an online fantasy novel about a magic university with a very compelling mixture of fantasy, college life, and some really adult situations (meaning F/F, M/F sex, M/M at least in the side story, some BDSM, some violence, some magical fights, good stuff) but also character development and interesting descriptions of the universe and the education. It is not a furry story, but there is an anthro fox girl and three catlike beings of varying importance.
If you haven't heard of the story, and you like reading, then maybe it is something for you. Please note that it will take a long time to go through all chapters that are already posted. During a relatively short time period, I obsessively read all of the existing chapters, it and lost a lot of spare time as well as some sleep ^^.

Just don't blame me if you become addicted, and please read the description on the home page. When you have read all 400 chapters, there is a side story with an additional 100 chapters or so.

Minnie Meme

jackalhound tagged me for this meme. I fail rule 3 miserably.THE RULES
1) Post these rules
2) Post 8 true things about yourself
3) At the end you must tag 8 people and post their icons
4) Go to their page and send them a message saying you tagged them
5) NO TAG-BACKS
1.) In my free time, I often find myself procrastinating, and can waste lots of time reading stories online instead of doing things that need to be done. I'm doing that right now.
2.) I'm trying to recover from massive over-geeking in my younger years, which left me with somewhat lacking social skills.
3.) I often find it very difficult to come up with interesting topics of conversation, and therefore I listen much more than I talk and rarely participate actively in communities. I try to work on this, but it is hard.
4.) Recently I've started to try to show my appreciation for artists and writers here that produce stuff that I like, and I try to put some thoughts into my comments. Sometimes I think I succeed.
5.) I first discovered the furry fandom through some webcomics, I think it was Jack (warning: contains mature themes).
6.) Both online and in real life, I rarely refuse a request for help and usually I highly enjoy helping others. It makes me feel needed.
7.) I registered with FA mainly to get access to the adult-related content, and therefore I chose a rather stupid user name. I don't exclusively read adult stuff, and I also like really sweet and innocent things, but I find that a little mature content can often spice up a story.
8.)
Edit: Tagged
coracleboat for teh silly meme!
