Europe report
Posted 14 years agoAs you may already know, I've returned from a short trip across the pond. The highlight of the trip was definitely the visit to Belgium, where I visited the Belgian Comic Strip Center in Brussels and the Hergé Museum in Louvain-la-Neuve. It was so inspiring to view the original sketches and plates of the artists which have inspired me over the years. Looking at an original Hergé page is a trip: You can see where mistakes were made and sections have been covered with new paper, so it almost looks 3D. And on his sketches you can see his doodles and notes unrelated to the main page content. It's a strong reminder that comics are a medium for reproduction, and that one shouldn't be afraid of a few mistakes on the way.
It was a pleasure meeting and attending these museums with the gracious and helpful Belgianfur
wonxi. You made my visit extra special!
Also, Europe is the land of airlines that sound fictional:
-JetairFly
-Tailwind Airlines
-Jet Airways
C'mon, Jet Airways? That's like the name of an unimaginative fake airline in a Van Damme movie.
I leave you with the most stunning imagery from my visit: A film clip from 1960 showing Hergé drawing Tintin and Snowy. When I saw this same clip in the museum, I was awestruck. I know that by this time he had probably drawn Tintin a million times and could probably do it in his sleep, but it's still fascinating to see it flow from his pen with such grace.

Posted 14 years agoI won't have access to FA for then next week. I look forward to the 500+ estimated submissions to binge on upon my return. See you then!
Meet "Redacteur" at the Belgian Comic Strip Center- July 31
Posted 14 years agoI've got a day (and night) to kill in Brussels on July 31st. Any Belgianfurs want to meet and look around the center with me? Last time I was in Brussels, I planned my one full day in that city around a visit to the Belgisch Centrum voor het Beeldverhaal / Centre belge de la Bande dessinée but I neglected to check ahead and see if it was open. It's closed Mondays, as I learned. Five years later, and I'm finally going back to finish the job! That, and for an unrelated trip to other parts of Europe. How fortunate that Brussels is one of the cheapest departure points from the continent to the USA. See you there?

My new porn account
Posted 14 years ago
nuzzleI started this several days back and I had fun seeing it spread viral-style, but it was never meant to be a secret. Here's an excerpt from a message I wrote in response to a viewer expressing interest in this new development:
"I've been considering starting a second account for a month or so. Since passing the one year mark here on FA, I looked over my first submissions and realized how far I had come in terms of skill, and realized I was probably ready to begin adult work. When I'm just drawing non-sexual cartoons and doodles, I don't care so much about the anatomy of the characters. However, since pornography is so heavily connected to the enjoyment of the body's form, I did not feel like I could attempt adult work competently until recently.
There was always sex in the Redacteurverse, but I just never drew it. I'll keep the same warmth and care in my drawings that I always try to convey, except now my characters will be expressing themselves fully. I also wanted to begin adult works because I despise the mentality of sex being "naughty," "dirty," or worse of all, "sinful." I don't want people to think that I avoid sex because of those things; it's because I just didn't have the skill to render their bodies in a sexually compelling fashion. Plus, I want to perpetuate scenes which depict healthy sexual activity among willing and loving participants... In a way, I'm broadcasting my own little utopia."
Streaming is weird
Posted 14 years agoI've greatly enjoyed the recent streaming sessions I've put on during the past few days. It's very strange, however, to be talking to a group of people and have them only type back at you. Stranger still is looking back at the recordings of the stream and hearing yourself speaking on only one side of the conversation. Also, I had no idea that I stuttered so much during the sessions. You viewers probably didn't notice, but upon playback I recognized those moments of hesitation and disfluency well. Not that I care- I'm heartened by my ability to work through these moments without bother.
One of my professors from my college years spoke of setting up a tape recorder in the room while one is working on art, because you do talk to your art, even if you don't think you do. The playback can reveal new insights into your process. The participatory and instant-feedback nature of this particular art community adds to the insight, and having live feedback whilst art making is an unforgettable and exciting experience. I look forward to continuing these sessions.

Surprise test transmission
Posted 14 years agohttp://www.watchtail.com/view.php?v=rediffusion
Just a camera pointed at a piece of paper, nothing special.
Also, my fingernail isn't black because of dirt, it's the remainder of a bruise I got last week whilst jumping on the ground to grind on scurrow.
EDIT: Transmission has ended, and watchtail is down for a few days. I might do this again on livestream or something in the next few days. Thanks to everyone who stopped by!

AC pre-report statement
Posted 14 years agoHow can I describe the level of joy I felt at AC? I would give any of my AC folks a kidney if you needed one. It was a sincere joy to share this weekend with all of you.
On Sunday night,
atmus23 and I were tucked away in a corner at a room party, where we waxed sociological about the origins and reasons for our peculiar shared interest. I'm fairly certain I've read the following in one way or another before, and I claim no originality here: I supposed that, since we've all taken so much interest in creatures that walk and talk like us, but aren't quite us, we found comfort in human-ish beings which allowed us a release from the pressures of humanity. And when all of us furry humans finally get together IRL on the dance floor, or a sauna, or at a room party, our shared desire makes us all click like nothing else does; I found myself opening up to people and trying new things like I haven't before. Pretending to be a wolf online has ironically helped me open up and grow more as a human person. I feel so privileged to have this experience in my life.
A poster-sized drawing reflecting the specific events of the weekend is forthcoming. You folks rock so much!

A special note about Anthrocon
Posted 14 years agoIn a journal I made for FWA, I wrote this:
"In all likelihood this won't be a problem, but I'm a person who stutters and stammers sometimes, and it might take a second to get a word out in conversation. If there's a weird pause in the middle of a sentence, know that I am not trying to make a weird dramatic point.
Also, because I take extra effort in forming my words completely and fluently, and the intonation is sometimes off, some people think I come from a foreign land. I'm from the US, though.
On a related note, if there are any other furs who stutter, I would *love* to chat. You can come up to me and stutter your way through your introduction all you want; Believe me, I know what that's like and I won't be made uncomfortable by it."
For the past couple of years, my speech has been consistently fluent, and the moments of disfluency have turned from long, nervous, self-compounding episodes into little road bumps in the middle of a sentence, and nothing more. The biggest part of overcoming disfluency was the act of "disclosure:" It's letting people know that I stutter, so there is no question as to what's going on when I, for instance, cannot speak my name or answer a waiter.
Anyways, my request of conversation still stands if there are any other furs who stutter, or if anyone is curious about it, feel free to ask, either here or in person. See you soon!

I very much enjoyed "The Body is a System"
Posted 14 years agoI know it's been out a while, but I just got this in the mail and I was greatly impressed:

Also, I re-read a bunch of lamezone comics afterward and I'm consistently taken aback at the author's ability to spook me.

 paranoidfurfagoidAC overview/Comics
Posted 14 years agoI will be in attendance at Anthrocon from Thursday to Sunday. I'm rooming with the coolness cartel:
 artdecade
 compfive
 jellooftheanticrumb
 goldenboiblaze
 hottapwater
 clup
 kilmo
 voln
 colnathanrjessup
 fabercastel
 cubetriangle
On saying hello: Some of you might expect me to be a free-love crotch-hugger, but that's reserved for my drawings (or close bros I already know(!)). A handshake is always nice!
I will not be drawing professionally (badges, commissions, etc.) My main goal is to hang out and talk with folks, and if I have time I shall gladly draw a little creature in your sketchbook/textbook.
If you would like to pick up one of my minicomics, please leave a comment here so that I may know how many I should print (if you are part of my group and don't already have one, rest assured that I have a copy set aside for you, should you so desire it). It will be released digitally after AC is over. This odd arrangement is the result of me promising everyone that my first comic would be a free promotional item for my new drawing blog, which is not yet set up. But it's fun anyways to give away a little token of appreciation to my followers.
I am so very excited for this event! I loved FWA to pieces, and AC is promising to be even better. The fulfillment of a years-long dream is finally happening. Is this feeling what it means to live in sincerity for one's self? See you in Pittsburgh!
