New Work Schedule - Commissioners Take a Look
Posted 9 years agoI've started giving myself deadlines so I have a better idea of how long everything's going to take.
If you're waiting on a commission please take a peek at this: http://www.silvixen.com/queue.html
I was shocked to see that reasonably my queue will push right back into November so I'm hoping to do better than what I have planned.
I will update regularly if there are any days that I know I can't work etc. I will also push people forward if I complete things ahead of time. This way, even if I jump the queue, you all have a date to look forward to. Some people might get theirs early, some people might not. But so long as I stick to this calendar (and any changes due to unforeseen circumstances), then hopefully there'll be no further confusion or issues with wait times. I will update it as I update my queue. I know I have some commissions still to add to both but they're not til the end anyway so you still have a pretty good idea on wait time.
Finally, this plan will only work so long as people are prompt at getting back to me about their sketches. That said it won't effect me so much, I'll just do someone else's work on your deadline day and you'll get pushed back. To be extra prompt about it, don't wait for me to come to you! Check my trello every Monday for fresh WIPs for the week ahead. This will also be a good indication of whose commission I'm working on if you spy me streaming.
And that's all. I hope you're all happy with the plan and as I said, I'll do my best to improve those dates where I can.
PS. Wherever it says 'AFK' that means I may not be at all contactable on those days. Please respect that. You may contact me of course but don't expect a reply right away.

For Real This Time
Posted 9 years ago
High res files are on their way. I have to sort out all my tax and stuff this week so I'll let it all upload while I do that.
I'll also give a shot at sketching a few more commissions however I'm afraid I've lost confidence in completing any at the moment. But that happens every now and again, and each time it does the next time I finish something it comes out 10 times better because I focus more.
Otherwise my day is just filled with trying to wear out an everlasting ball of puppy energy. And doing washing and mowing the lawn while it's NOT RAINING FOR ONCE!!!
Puppy

Just an update on why I won't be getting work done this week. The reason has changed somewhat. Apparently I now have a puppy.
This Week's Plan
Posted 9 years ago
I have been so humbled by your acceptance and patience lately. It's amazing and I can't thank you all enough.
To help myself out I am officially not expecting myself to finish any further commissions this week. That isn't to say that I won't, I'm just telling myself I don't have to if it gets too hard.
What I will be doing however, is working on side projects, prizes and free stuff that's either due soon or overdue. Stuff that I left on the sidelines because there was no direct money involved. Most of this I won't be able to post or talk about as a lot of it is for private clients or time sensitive but they also need to get done. I'd also like to do some stuff for myself so maybe some personal scribbles might appear. Should my muse return I'll get right back to work for all of you, but until then it's full steam into the ground and do whatever the hell I want.
I have a couple more YCH images I revived from old sketches and unused commission WIPs so I may post some of those later on as well.
Finally I just want to add, since I moved from the city life has been pretty damn lonely. My partner is gone 12 hours of the day and sometimes for a week straight. Everyone I know is either back in Melbourne or all the way back in my home town so unless I travel I can't see anyone and travel is becoming harder as I push my savings to help me finish my backlog. So if you guys ever want to chat, please feel free. I warn you that I'm terrible at conversation and rarely start an exchange without being prodded first (anxiety and stuff) but just the simple little buzz of my phone does lift my spirits and give me that tiny bit of social energy. You'll find me on telegram under the same name.
Thanks for reading.
Art Block
Posted 9 years agoTrying to push through but I'm struggling to like anything I've sketched over the last couple of days and I absolutely can't make bodies look right at the moment. Normally I'd just try easier commissions but I seem to have no interest at the moment, even though my card declined today thanks to buying all those con supplies with the pin up payments.
I may need some time, a day or two, before I can return to full productivity. Trying to finish the top 5 or so commissions on my queue but all I seem to be able to do is a little bit a day. I'll be updating the screenshots as I do those little bits so you guys can at least see that progress. Bah, I've never been good at working full time.

Remember the ol' Iron Artist sketches I was doing?
What's your opinion on those returning?
Let me know.
High Res Files
Posted 9 years ago
Sending out all owed full Res files today. Sorry to those who've waited two weeks.
Will also probably be working on the smaller commissions in my queue today due to totally messing up my hand/wrist yesterday (aches and blisters). Should be back to normal work on Monday.
Finally thanks to those who are taking my commission Slots. I can finally afford to get my ink and paper ready for printing fresh new prints for ConFurgence. No hassle this year as I actually have a printer! Remember if you have an issue with your commission being sold as a print you must tell me during the commission process. If you decide later on I'll gladly cease printing your commission but will sell what I already have.

Advice for Fresh Artists
Posted 9 years ago
Was just having a conversation about this and figured it'd be nice to write about it.
If you're just starting out with commissions I would like to offer one very solid piece of advice:
HAVE A TERMS OF SERVICE!
There are clients out there who will take advantage of young and inexperienced freelancers and I've seen this first hand. Having a ToS will not only protect you but it will also protect your clients. They know what they're in for in terms of your process and you know how to block out anyone who looks for holes in that plan. Some things I've seen and experienced include, endless changes/revisions/changes of mind throughout the commission, not paying before the completion of a commissions and thus never paying at all, manipulating an artist to charge less for whatever reason and forbidding an artist to post their own work.
1. Limit the amount of revisions someone can have to their commission. If they like your style this shouldn't be a problem, but often someone will commission the wrong artist for the wrong thing calling it a 'challenge'. State that if there are more than a certain number of revisions you'll charge more. This will protect you financially.
2. Get your payments upfront! I have never had an issue with this. No client has ever argued that they don't want to pay before they see their commission. Unless you charge by the hour (and let's face it... barely any of us do) there's no reason you shouldn't be able to see your money upfront. This DOES require you to be loyal to your clients though. Do not screw them over. Be trustworthy and get that work DONE.
3. Have a solid price list. Think of everything including complicated characters, image inserts (close ups), additional body parts etc. Do not get saddled with the most complicated commission ever and have it conveniently slot into one of your already set prices in such a way that you can't argue. Again, protect yourself. You don't have to list all these additional prices but state that they exist.
4. And of course retain your rights. Your artwork is YOURS. It's fine on a professional level if your client wants to keep their image secret, but get them to buy the rights to that image. Otherwise you have every right to do what you want with it. Respect people with time sensitive stuff (presents, holidays etc) but post it the moment you can. If someone complains that they didn't want their image posted online, direct them to the ToS you clearly wrote out that they were supposed to read BEFORE commissioning you. Then they can't do anything to you.
5. Always have a ToS, and always direct your clients to read it. Protect yourself and your clients and you'll have a smooth experience in the art business!

Sketching Day!
Posted 9 years ago
Running short on stuff to finish so it's sketching day again tomorrow. I'll be focusing on both the overdue queue and the general queue and I'll leave head shots alone until after hours as per usual.
Am pretty proud, technically I've finished 19 commissions since last Monday and while not all are large I still am loving the massive shrinkage of my queue. And I bet you guys are loving getting your art at last!
Some things I am still dangerously behind on however, I still have FurDU stuff to mail out (and shamefully.... a couple from Confurgence too). Due to this I don't think I'll be taking traditional table tops anymore... I'm terrible at the mailing thing. BUT they are all done. I have them in a pile next to me and am going to chase up the few home addresses I don't have soon. Makes me feel slightly better to know I'm also waiting on stuff from FurDU so I'm not the only one. Heh.
Also the prizes from my competition on DA in January... JANUARY! Good god I'm terrible. Plus my ref sheet raffle winner has also been waiting.
In addition to that I still have two personal projects to finish... or start... so I have a very solid reason for wanting my queue dissolved asap. I'll try and work solidly up until Thursday this week, I may need an early weekend to recover from working into the night the last few days. My hand actually hurts, it's fantastic.
Anyway that's my update stating how horrendously behind on everything I am.
Commission Type: Expressions of Interest
Posted 9 years ago
I'd like to open a small special later this week of busts/waist ups done in a similar way to my full detail head shots. Technically it would just be a full detail waist up but with more focus on character and colour, and the same bg I use for my head shots. I'd just like to know who'd be interested. I haven't decided what price yet but it would be cheaper than usual.
OR
I do the same thing but YCH buyouts instead. Or both!
Let me know if you're interested.
One Calendar Page Left
Posted 9 years ago
The last remaining calendar page is May. Should no one claim it soon I'll be keeping it for myself as it is my birthday month. That said I already have 50% of the cover and I don't want anyone to miss out. So if you want it let me know soon otherwise I'll be closing applications.
Post your Ref

Please.
Edit: Okay stahp. Those I used are up in my gallery, thanks!
Whee!
Posted 9 years ago
I can see the bottom of my overdue queue without scrolling! Yahoo!
Putting in some extra effort this week as I've somehow got more commitments coming up this weekend (never been invited to stuff 3 weekends in a row... I might splode) and so far I'm pretty happy with the progress. I have a few sketches I haven't sent out yet and a few that I'm waiting for feedback on. Other than that I'll be sketching for the rest of today and most likely the start of tomorrow until I either reach an artistic freedom commission or someone gets back to me. Head shots might take the side-lines this week as I seem to have annoyed some people by working on them as warm ups instead of doing older commissions.
That's all the update I have. It's not much but I have a lot to do that's not on my queue so I have to make time for those projects too.
Well... back to work!
A Mere 2 Calendar Pages Left! Cover Sold

What Adoptables Get Your Attention?
Posted 9 years ago
I love breaking things up with adoptable characters now and then, but as I'm not an artist who regularly does them and is expected to, I need to draw some attention to them when I do.
I've tried various methods from outlandish designs, re-using bases, creating original images and offering uncommon animals and hybrids.
None really stand out from the other in terms of attention (maybe I'm just bad at designing things, I dunno).
What do you look for in an adoptable character? Even if you don't buy them, what draws your attention?
Is it purely the design or do you like seeing them as original images? Do you prefer cookie cut bases that can be re-used and potentially shared with others for use?
How about original species?
If I could make a poll on this site I would, but I'd love your opinions!
While I'm not taking additional commissions I may need some extra income and this is a simple solution that I can do late at night outside of my regular work hours.
No More Commissions Until
Posted 9 years ago
Just for anyone who's asking, I'm not taking on any more commissions until my calendar pages are completely sold. I don't care if that means I struggle with rent this week or have to use my savings. Every other year it filled within 48 hrs and I don't see what's so different about now. So that's the deal for now.
I Have Returned
Posted 9 years ago
Not that you noticed I left but I'm back home now. Sickness from last week is mostly gone, I still have some muscle soreness but hopefully that will go in time. As for today I'm good and hungover so I may not make it to the old computer, but I'll be back in business tomorrow for sure.
If anyone has any queries or concerns about their commission I invite you to contact me. Otherwise just keep an eye on my queue as per usual. Full res files probably won't make their way out before next weekend but everything is posted on here and Forbiddenvixen so if your commission is complete you can access a submission friendly file now :)

This Is What I Get
Posted 9 years agoFor saying I haven't been sick in like a year.
Small possibility you won't get much or anything from me until next Tuesday. My back and one half of my head feels like it's been hit by a truck.
Yaaaay
