Somewhere Out There...
Posted 17 years ago... There is a graveyard, populated by everyone who ever got KO'd by a Smart Bomb. And if you look closely at those lonely graves some moonlit night, you will find that perhaps half of them bear this inscription:
I THOUGHT IT WAS A POKÉ BALL
*Ahem* About what I said earlier...
Posted 17 years agoOkay, so, I do the bulk of my work on the internet, a medium which, as much as I enjoy and rely on it, I have frankly never fully trusted. There's a part of me that's always looking over my shoulder waiting for this whole shebang to come crashing down. Consequently, when I saw that article on Orphaned Works over at the AWN site, which I normally find helpful and trustworthy, I was inclined to panic along with everybody else and start running around squawking about the end of the world. Turns out I was probably a little hasty.
BioRebel has been good enough to point me to this article:
http://maradydd.livejournal.com/374886.html
It discusses, in a very civil, levelheaded manner, what an orphaned work is and why people are trying to create legislation that will let people use them (It's actually perfectly reasonable). They're just trying to make it so that people can use hundred-year old photographs and stuff where the original creator is unfindable and not be afraid of getting sued. There is no legislation in the works that will force people to register all their crap. The US is not pulling out of the international copyright convention. The AWN article is, in the words of the above blogger, "miserably poorly researched." The legislation he talked about apparently died in 2006, anyway.
So yeah, lat that be a lesson to me about doing my homework before getting all riled up. I urge anyone who becme similarly worried to read the blog.

Only in America
Posted 17 years agoI imagine most of you have heard about this already, but just in case:
http://mag.awn.com/index.php?ltype=.....605&page=1
The gist of the article - and I urge you to read it yourself - is that there is a new law going before Congress. Under this law you will no longer automatically own the copyright to your creative work, they way you do now. Instead you'll have to pay a company an exorbitant amount to register your work - every single piece, past, present and future.
Even if you do register, some other registry can find and claim your work, and unless you find out about and contest it within a certain period of time the ownership will pass to them. You could end up illegally using your own work.
I'm not American myself, so anything I do to stop this will have to be in a more roundabout way. I'm currently writing my various Ministers, asking what I can do, but in the meantime I figure the best I can do is spread the word.
If you are American, I urge you, please, take the columnist's advice and stop this in its tracks! Write to your representatives in government, make a fuss. There's a reason we have the system we have now, and it's because anything like this coerced registry will inevitably turn into a massive cluster fuck where artists lose all control of their work. It needs to die before it gets stronger.
Sincerely,
Slate

Brawl Meme!
Posted 17 years agoCouldn't resist :D
Who is your primary character so far?
- Ike, though I play on Random most of the time, so...everyone?
Secondary?
- Lucario, though see above :P
Character just for fun, not competitive play?
- I only play for fun, but I like ROB for his spastic style and absurd recovery.
Favorite series in which a character was used for Brawl?
- Metroid, or possibly Kirby.
If you could add one character from another Nintendo game, who would it be?
- Midna, riding Wolf Link
If you could add one character from any other video game ever, who would it be?
- Bub and Bob, as a two-man team, or Ameratasu :D
If you could add/change one thing about an existing character, what would it be?
- Make Toon Link's Final Smash the Hurricane Slash from Wind Waker. Also, Dedede needs tweaking.
Coolest looking character?
- Sheik
Worst looking character?
- Snake. I don't know if those other costumes are from the games, but they all look ridiculous.
Biggest let-down character?
- Dedede. Hammers are for hitting, not spinning. Silly Penguin! Move faster!
Cheapest character?
- Pit. Hands down. I've never had so much fun being annoying :D
Best looking effects/weapons?
- Giga Bowser looks awesome. So does Ganon for the three seconds you see him.
Favorite Final Smash?
- Ike. So freaking ridiculous.
Dumbest Final Smash?
- Peach. It should either put them to sleep in the air or just last longer.
Best outfit?
- Dark Link.
Favorite stage?
- Green Hill Zone is a lot of fun.
Favorite boss in the Subspace Emissary?
- That big mech-looking guy with the axe for a face.
What did you think of the Subspace Emissary?
- It was fun, though I wish it had been a -little- harder to unlock all the characters.
Did you get it at midnight release?
- Nope. Didn't have it here.
Did you dress up as any of the characters?
- A-Nope
Did you get a Japanese Wii and game to play it early?
- Boy, did I ever not.
Do you use the Wiimote or the Gamecube controllers?
- Wiimote and Nunchuk. Embrace the future!

Commission Edit
Posted 17 years agoIf you've approached me for a commission and I haven't gotten back to you, please know that I WILL. I've been going through my mail, but I got a LOT of messages and I'm having a hard time sorting out which ones I've already responded to.
So if you're feeling ignored, please don't. I'm working on it, but I'm frankly a little swamped :P

On the Subject of Finished Animations
Posted 18 years agoSince completing "A Change in Plans," I have to say I've been blown away by the amount of positive feedback I've received. I've gotten litrally hundreds of comments, shouts, private notes and e-mails from people who want to tell me how much they enjoyred it (and only a few who think I'm sick and depraved).
Along with all the overt compliments have come praise of a different species; people who loved the animation so much they want to see it finished. This journal is a communal response to the multitude of these requests, and I'm sorry for not responding to each of you individually. There are a LOT of you, and doing it like this may help answer future questions before they're asked.
The short andswer is, it's not going to happen.
It's not a question of time. If it were, I'd be working on it now, as commissions seem to be a bit scarce at the moment. Nor is it a question of money. I've received several offers, some of which had the potential to be EXTREMELY generous, particularly by non-professional standards (You know who you are, and I'm truly flattered). These offers were enough to make me take this long to reply as I weighed my options.
At the end of the day, though, it's mostly a question of career. Animation is not only a hobby, but a signifigant part of my professional career. Finishing the animation would take months, at least, and I would want to make sure it was of the highest possible standards. At the end of it, however, I would be unable to use material of this nature in my demo reel. Making a project this big that I can never use to promote myself just doesn't make professional sense.
So thank you all for your support, but Im afraid it just isn't in the cards.
Sincerely Yours,
Slate
PS - What ever happened to all those people who wanted prints?

Posted 18 years agoHoly cow, 2000 watches!
it seems only yesterday I was up here thanking everybody for my first thousand. I hope I can keep doing whatever it is I've been doing right!
Also, would there be any interest in buying prints of my art? Nothing fancy, just photo-paper printouts. If there's a demand I'd be more than happy to give it a whirl.

The Seeker in a nutshell
Posted 18 years agoImagine that you have a big, matal bucket. Inside this bucket swims every idea that J.K. Rowling, C.S. Lewis, and Steven King ever decided to throw out of a novel, mixed liberally with liquified Essence of Anime. Now imagine that you load the whole concoction into a six-pound powder cannon and fire it at a movie screen, except the noise gives you a concussion, so everything is jerky and unsteady when you sit down to watch, and your vision keeps jumping from muddy darkness to blinding light.
And that's how you make The Seeker: THe Dark is Rising.

Posted 18 years agoI am attempting to run SWAT 4 on a laptop under Windows Vista, but it only works occasionally. Most of the time the little loading icon comes up for about three seconds and then nothing happens. I'm already running it in XP compatability mode. Does anyone know what might be causing the problem?
Also, is there anyone who knows where I can get new maps/weapons, or who wants to game multiplayer?

Comissions
Posted 18 years agoOkay, so:
I'm finally ready to get started doing commissions. For more information please see my Commissions Info page.
I only want to take one commission to start off, however, and the only way I can figure to do that fairly is on a first-come, first-served basis. Any latecomers will be gotten to in order, though please understand I don't know how fast I'll be able to get to you.
So please drop me a line at slate4000@hotmail.com, with a complete description of what you'd like, as clear as possible. Also include if you have Paypal or not, so I know if I need to send the payment request.
Thatnks, all!

Moving is Difficult and Time-Consuming
Posted 18 years agoOkay, there's been a lull in the art, and it's because I've been settling into a new place. Settling is now done, so hopefully the flow of art will be starting up soon.
Also, I figured out how to work within Paypal's rules. Turns out it's only against their rules to deal in adult material if it's solely digital, so my commissioners will be receiving a nice printed version of their pic, just to keep things on the up-and-up :)
Comission system more or less set up. Will post details in a few days.

Paypal Alternatives
Posted 18 years agoHi Everyone!
In my ongoing attempts to start doing comissions, I have at last reached the stage where I figure out how to get paid :P
My first thoughts ran to PayPal, but for various reasons it looks like that's not going to pan out. Their shady business practices nonwithstanding, they have a no-spooge policy that might render the comissions I do kind of boring :P Even if the policy only applies if someone rats me out, I don't feel comfortable violating their terms of service.
Right now I'm looking at MerchantInc.com, but does anyone know of any other viable alternatives? (Viable here meaning "Free to set up" and "Available to residents of Canada").
Thanks a lot!
