Is this thing still on?
Posted 7 years agoI haven't messed with FA in a long time, so whats going on?
I haven't been to a con since TFF earlier this year, and I dont know when I will attend another one. AC and Megaplex are a no go. Maybe MFM or ACFI.
I started re-editing and uploading older con photos to Flicker from Anthrocon 2009 and 2010 last month, but they are halfway done. So I need to get on the ball and get them uploaded asap because now that Smugmug has bought Flicker, who knows what will happen? I'd like to get all my convention photos from 2006 to 2018 on there too..

Alamo City Furry Invasion con report!
Posted 8 years agoACFI was a nice big surprise. I didn't know about the con until a few months ago and after looking at the website I didn't expect much out of it besides being in what looked like a cool downtown hotel. I thought even if the convention sucked the rest would make up for it. But ACFI was a very well organized and well ran con. And surprisingly 737 attendees showed up. That's more than TFF's first year (around 550) and from what I heard was just 14 away from breaking BLFC's first year attendance. Pretty good for a con that I didn't see get much attention around the fandom.
I loved the El Tropicano's retro 60's design and vibe of the place but it's 16 dollar for 24 hr a day parking was high compared to Dallas hotel self-parking. The wi-fi was disconnecting all the time or super-slow for most of the weekend (thanks to everyone who brought their X-Box or Playstation). I had to crank the shower knob all the way to full hot and the water still wasn't very hot even at 1-2 am. And my room's AC vents were dirty (I have asthma so that really matters). The staff was super nice and helpful though there wasn't any good restaurants in walking distance.
And my gripe with the con itself was with the schedule. The one printed up in the con book was confusing to read (and made me miss closing ceremonies which I thought was at 6 pm Sunday) with the openings, panels and events all crammed on the same page. It needed to be spread out on 2-3 pages along with the event/panel descriptions. I hope the ACFI staff uses Sched.com (TFF, AC and MFM use it) for next year. And I heard some gripes about not having a dance on Friday nights so I hope they'll add more DJ's. And nobody wanted to have a pool party with that nice big pool outside?
Everyone seemed well behaved and friendly. It was good to see some old friends and fursuiters from TFF and to make some new ones too. It seemed most of the attendees were local or from Austin or Houston. Getting 737 attendees just shows there was a need for another convention in Texas. With the way word gets around now in this fandom ACFI could grow really fast.
I've had a busy week back at home, so I haven't done any editing on my photos and videos. I hope to get my ACFI photos on Flickr and a few favorite photos here on FA this week. It's been too long since I've used FA!

And YES if I took a photo of you, you can repost it here on FA, Flickr, Facebook etc..
Note: the yellow incandescent lighting in the hotel played hell with my camera's white balance. I color corrected many of them but some of them just didn't turn out as perfect as I wanted them to be.

Megaplex 2016 MEME Thang!

Where are you staying?
Embassy Suites Orlando Buena Vista South (whatta name!) - Main Hotel
When will you be arriving and leaving?
I will be arriving in Orlando late weds night, around 10:30-11 PM (and praying for no weather/maintenance delays so I can catch a Mears shuttle that late) and leaving monday morning.
How are you traveling?
Flying via Delta (Shreveport-Atlanta-Orlando)
Where will you be most of the time during the day/s?
Checking out the con and partying!
What/where will you be eating?
Never been to this area before. I prefer American fare and fast food so I can get back to the con in a short time. Any suggestions in walking distance?
Will you be having a room party?
Nope, but if you're having one, tweet me up!
Will you be drinking and/or getting drunk?
Drinking yeah - getting drunk nope, unless someone gives me something like the drink Skippyfox gave me a couple of year ago at MP. (I think it was a mudslide - yum but WOW!)
What is your gender?
Male
How tall are you?
6 Ft
If I approach you, will you chat with me?
Yep!
If I see you, how should I get your attention?
Dive off a balcony, oh wait just yell at me!
How many furry conventions have you attended?
Megaplex will be my 50th CONVENTION and my 10th Year attending Megaplex! This is very appropriate because Megaplex was also the first furcon I attended in 2006!
Do you own a fursuit?
Nope, I will be taking lots of photos and some video of you crazies.. Smile!!!
How can I find you?
I'll be around either in my room (I have arthritis so I may be upstairs to get off my feet and to check my photos and video) or around the con.
Can I buy you drinks?
Absolutely!
Can I visit your room?
If I know you and you inform me.
Can I draw in your sketchbook?
I got this blank book being a SuperSoaker oop Sponsor at Anthrocon this year.. maybe I should put it to good use?
Can I take your picture?
No Prob, just dont send it to the FBI :)
See Ya There! Who's goin'?

Anthrocon 2016 Con Report!
Posted 9 years agoUpdate! Here's my AC 2016 photos: https://www.flickr.com/photos/wbtx/.....19230756/page1
It never fails - although I try to arrive in Pittsburgh early and make an almost week-long vacation out of Anthrocon, the con always blows right by me and soon its time to go home. It was another blast of big time furry fun with so many things going on in a beautiful city that loves us. I arrived around 10pm after a couple of rain delays in Atlanta, ate a big burger at Bill's Burgers and hit the bed early. Wednsday I spent almost two hours in Eide's Entertainment looking at vinyl and CD's. I bought about 5 45's (a couple of Elvis Sun 45 reproductions) and a couple of CD's. I also checked out the Exchange (right by Fernando's) and bought a couple of used CD's for 5 bucks each to replace some CD's that have somehow disappeared in my collection over the years (aka "Can I borrow this CD? - I'll bring it back tomorrow...").
Anyway the con was well ran and I have no major complaints. I usually try to snag a room at the Marriott Courtyard as soon as registrations go online, but this time the place filled up in like 7 seconds this year. I was told a few years ago by someone on staff that the Courtyard's room block is only 70 rooms, so no wonder. Anyway I got a single room at the Westin, and had the usual fears about the elevators not working or taking 20 minutes to get on one. But the Westin had upgraded the elevator system last year to a computer ran system that worked smoothly and I don't remember spending much time waiting in line in the lobby for it, maybe 10 minutes.
The highlight was the outdoor public fursuit parade. I saw photos and video of last years parade (which I missed) and freaked at the huge turnout of people who wanted to see it. So after the supersponsor lunch I arrived about 30 minutes before the parade and found the city sitting up chairs around the DLCC. So I took the opportunity to get a good seat and then slowly a huge mob of parents and their kids showed up and the parade began. It really felt like a parade at Disneyland/World. I'm surprised I got some good video of it because of all the distractions of kids running to the fursuiters to get high-fives or pictures and their parents trying to control them, or get selfies themselves. Anyway it was a lot of crazy fun and I'm glad to finally experience it.
My only disappointment about AC this year was there was some people who attended in the past I wanted to see again but didn't make it, or I just didn't run into them. With 7100 furries its so easy to see someone for a few minutes and then never see them for the rest of the con. But I still had a great time, and I hope to make it back next year!
Next events I'll be attending is Furry Siesta (a overnight furmeet in Dallas at the old TFF hotel) and then Megaplex and MFM. Hope to see ya there.

Fursonas Documentary Review
Posted 9 years agoFursonas - My Review
I paid for (via Vimeo) downloaded and watched the Fursonas documentary this week and came away with disappointment. While it was well produced and had several entertaining interviews with well known and infamous furries, it fails in its argument that all Furries should be honest and open to the media because of it's mean-spirited way it treats Uncle Kage.
The documenting team did to Kage what bad TV reporters have done to cons and furries for years who deny interviews or anything else they want to film - they Google the internet, take random video clips from YouTube and carefully edit them to give a bad impression or to shock viewers. It overall winds up being a smear job designed to make Kage look bad, and makes our fandom look bad too.
Because of scenes of furries smoking pot and a (cringe inducing) Bad Dragon product demonstration, I wouldn't recommend showing Fursonas to anyone as an introduction to the fandom. While watching this documentary I got the feeling the people who made it haven't been involved in the fandom very long, haven't gone to enough conventions and talked to enough furries to get a good idea about us, learned about the past history of the fandom and its dealing with the media, and how to put together a documentary about the fandom that doesn't shock or mock anyone.
I was also disappointed that they interviewed mostly fursuiters. With all the money they generated they could have easily interviewed fursuit builders, comic and book writers, musicians and artists. These people in our fandom hardly ever get interviewed. NOTHING was talked about the charity work Anthrocon and other fur cons around the world have done to raise millions of dollars for people and animals in need.
I hope this documentary doesn't wind up hurting Anthrocon (especially relations with the city government of Pittsburgh) because Kage and the AC staff have done a fantastic job helping to improve the image of our fandom. It's sad the people who created this documentary didn't understand that.

TFF 2016 Con Report!
Posted 9 years agoI had another great time at Furry Fiesta this year! Unlike last year the weather was better.. a lot of rain but no ice or snow.
My Likes:
The Malachite ballroom was great for concerts like Pepper Coyote & Fox Amoore's show, The Circus Freaks, and The Furry Drama Show. The acoustics sounded great in there.
I had a lot of fun at the GOH Zootopia Lunch, having it at a movie theater was a great idea. Best moment: When everyone howled at "that" part.
I enjoyed the "Where You At TFF 2009?" panel. I discovered a lot of things behind the beginning of TFF that I didn't know. To make it short - the con organizers and staff lucked out finding a great hotel and having more than expected attendees (they expected around 200 but had 550). It's still kind of hard for me to believe that TFF has been around for 8 years now.
I also thought the Food Trucks (first time I tried them) were great for lunch. The Chicken sandwich and BBQ chopped brisket sandwich I bought on Friday and Sunday were hot and fresh. I wish more cons could have them.
My dislikes:
The first 3-5 rows in the ballroom need to be reserved for Sponsors & SuperSponsors. This is something TFF had for several years but dropped the ball this year.
Main events still need to start closer on time. Too many started 15-20 minutes late.
Matthew Ebel's show was at a bad time (6 pm) while most of the con was out having dinner. Next year have it at 7 pm or later!
The dance competition really needs to move onstage. I sat in the back and all I could see were fursuiters heads bouncing up and down. Another idea would be moving the dance floor to the center of the ballroom and having the chairs arranged in a sports arena style.
I noticed in Kempi's (the convention lounge) there were ads for the DJ sets on the TV's, but most didn't mention what genre of music they were playing.
And I hate to complain too, but please fix that down Escalator! I have chronic arthritis and its painful to walk down it. Put a big sign saying dont jump on the damn thing. Or maybe have a con staffer watch at the end and threaten people who do it with their badge taken away..or shoot them (hey this is Texas!).
My biggest gripe was the con just blew by me this year. I wanted to take it easy but the schedule was packed with things I wanted to see, so the weekend went so fast. I miss the days when TFF was a small "relax-a-con" where there weren't as many things to do. (Same for Megaplex and FWA too.) But the fandom is still growing fast, and with the huge success of Zootopia we may have a huge boom of new furries getting involved in the fandom soon.
I just uploaded the TFF 2016 Fursuit Parade here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wPaedZxSdY and my photos will be uploaded to Flicker as soon as I sort, color correct and edit them....Later!!

Zootopia Review (No Spoilers!)
Posted 9 years agoWow, just got back from seeing Zootopia. But was it "the ultimate movie for Furries" as some movie and fan culture writers and even I thought it might be? I'll get to that later....
Too many CGI animated movies follow a "Animals VS Stupid Humans" formula. Kids love it and when done right (Madagascar) it can be super-entertaining. But too many studios have run that formula right into the ground (Here lies "Norm of the North"...). So I'm thrilled that Zootopia did something different. After seeing the whole movie I believe this was a daring movie for Disney to make. It doesn't look like it from the characters, poster and trailers, but Disney took some big chances with storytelling, animation while making a serious comment about bias in modern society, and it succeeds wonderfully.
Most Disney animated films with anthropomorphic characters have always existed in "a long long time ago" and not now so they wouldn't age for future generations. I recall it may have been something Walt Disney deliberately wanted for his films. (btw one of the few exceptions was 101 Dalmatians, and that was released in 1961, the year I was born) So seeing so many modern pop culture references all over the place and technology like cell phones was fun and different for Disney. I just wonder what future audiences will think of things like "Zoogle"...will they be outdated or look silly in 20-40 years... Who knows? I hope it won't date that badly and become a classic.
With its high-tech modern society, Zootopia felt like a Dreamworks movie in many ways. I think this was Disney's way of showing Dreamworks, Illumination and other studios "hey we can make a modern animated movie too". There's even a funny scene where a main character makes fun of and debunks the "if you wish upon a star" fantasy that so many Disney classics have. That shot of serious adult reality is something I thought Disney would never put in their movies.
And the Predators (white?) vs Prey (minorities) bias message that has been written about in the press so many times was nicely handled. Though it was talked about a lot, it never felt preachy and shoved in your face. But at the same time because of the super-fast pacing and sometimes very violent action will anyone remember that message, especially kids?
The animation and character design just explodes off the screen (go see it in 3D). I wish I could have saw more brown bears except for just a few seconds though!
Zootopia could have used another main song after Shakari's "Try Anything" which gets played twice in the movie. It's fun, lightweight and catchy Top 40 pop but it doesn't make that classic Disney musical impact in the plot like Frozen's "Let It Go" did.
Just like every Disney film Zootopia is made for a general audience, but I don't believe this movie would have been made without the furry fandom's influence. From what I've heard from other furries (especially from the Orlando area) in the past Disney has wanted nothing to do with our fandom for years. But after buying Lucasfim and Marvel perhaps Disney brought in the right people or finally figured out how to deal with and market to fandoms, especially online.
I think Disney wanted to create a huge internet buzz for the movie so they went right after Furries. That first Zootopia trailer was a huge shock to me and so many other furs. It's explanation about anthropomorphics was almost a love letter to our fandom. And that the company, the animators and directors were friendly to furries, artists and fursuiters via Twitter and Facebook was refreshing after so many years of Disney putting up a virtual brick wall between fans and creators.
Our fandom has been saying "Cartoons don't have to be for Kids!" for years. We have been creating our own adult, smart, serious and yes sexy anthropomorphized "Furry" characters for decades because Disney and other animation studios never did that very often. The furry fandom has been steadily building up a fan base of adult fans worldwide, and after being just a internet joke for years with a bad rep has finally started to be taken and marketed to seriously. Who knows what will happen to our fandom in the future, but I hope its a good thing. I don't want to see furcons like Anthrocon become trade shows like some anime and superhero cons have.
Zootopia hints at a future where movie companies don't always have to make G and PG anthropomorphic movies. I'd love to see a animation company really push the limits of CGI storytelling, animation and design with anthropomorphic characters in a PG-13 or R rated movie in serious adult situations and not have to make it cute and cuddly for the kids, marketers and the toy makers.
Oh yeah, so is it a Furry Movie? Absolutely! Go see it now!
Comments welcome!

And if this video has been blocked in your country try this link http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3.....t-two_creation
I had some leftover video from TFF 2015 still on my computer, so I put together another video of more random moments from a great con! This was captured February 21-22, 2015 at the Intercontinental Hotel in Dallas Texas! Why only 2 1/2 days..? I had to leave TFF early this year because of an approaching winter ice storm, so I missed all of Sunday's activities. Bummer, but I hope the weather at TFF 2016 will be much warmer!

Megaplex 2015 - Quick Con Report!
Posted 10 years agoWow! I had another blast at Megaplex this year! Unlike some of the earlier MP's I've attended I had no problems with the con, my flights or the hotel this year. I'm sure the staff had the usual BS and problems but as an attendee I never saw them. Everything went smooth for me.
My only disappointments with the con was not the con itself, but with those who didn't show up this year. If you had the time and money to go and still blew this con off, you dummies missed a great Megpalex! And I woke up Sunday morning at 9AM feeling like hell after getting about 5 1/2 hours of sleep. So I took two Tylenol's, laid back down and slept until 11am.. Which meant I missed the CARE Foundation presentation, which I heard was awesome and also had a baby tiger you could pose and get photos with! (Damn!!!)
It's been a thrill to see this once small and put-down con grow into one of the best ran and themed cons in the fandom. Yappy, KP and the MP staff have done a hell of a job. (in comparison, my first Megaplex in 2006 had 257 attendees, nine years later it's 1,472!)
Next year's theme "The British Invasion" should be fun, since I love 60's British Rock and Pop music! And that NEW HOTEL! It makes the Marriott look like a Motel 6. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILfrAIavOLw
See ya at MFM!

About this FA/IMVU thing, I have one thing to say...
Posted 10 years agoWell a couple of things:
I'm staying here for now just to see what happens. If IMVU improves FA with fast servers, lots of free space for large photos, images and music, FOLDERS, a better web interface with lots of useful features and imbedding for streaming media from YouTube and Vimeo, and better security from hacks and DDOS attacks the new FA might be great.
On the other hand I've been using the internet since '95 and seen so many free websites get bought out by companies and corporations and everything turns to shit because they want to spam us with ads, they remove and change features that were once free, they start screwing over a lot of users without explanation, or worse of all, they try turning it into a all-pay site = BIG MISTAKE.
So to wrap it up, if IMVU pisses off the majority of this fandom big time, FA as a relevant important website for the furry fandom will be over. Bye!
BTW I do have a Weasyl website at: https://www.weasyl.com/~wildbilltx
If FA goes south I may be moving everything I posted from FA to there.
BTW MCFC and FWA are no-gos for me! Sorry, I may try to make it to Megaplex and MFM. I just have to wait and see what happens in my life.
