Taro is born from a powerful family that has a link to the great tree of life, Yggdrasill. Hence the last name. With being born into this family gives him an incredible advantage as he possess the a genetic legacy called the Yggdrasill Grimoire, which normally appear in a single family member per generation.The Grimoire manifests as a pair of red eyes, or in Taro's case, only one is red. It lets him see and manipulate the ebb and flow of mana and energy around him.It's primary nature is to store the knowledge of all previous holders of the Grimoire, which then holds hundreds of years of magic.(Though it takes a loooong time to unlock that knowledge bit by bit). Its sought after by many people. Groups with their own agendas, the government trying to make a weapon out of it. Scientific communities hoping to study and maybe reproduce the Grimoire. Even when past attempts have all met with failure. His family used him as a means to an end. As a single but reliable source to magical information that had been previously thought lost, they would sell this knowledge to the highest bidder. He was a great way for the elders to keep the family swimming in luxury. The elders went even as far as making him a prisoner in what was supposed to be his home. They had ways to control him. After overhearing his family talk about putting him into a coma to ensure his cooperation, Taro had had enough. With the help of friends, a scarce few family members he could still trust, and some outsiders, He managed to get away. He tasted true freedom. Now his family is looking for anyway to get him to come back, even by force. But Taro knows better then to return!
