It’s not like I’m going to be the first person to post this, and I’m not trying to say that if you’re still there that you’re the worst person in the world or you’re directly giving the owner a billion dollars or whatever.

Please get off X, because it is a network effect, and the more you post there, the more incentive other people have to use it. We all know the vibes there are getting worse and worse, and the owner does use it to spread racist/sexist/fascist propaganda, and the sooner everyone builds up communities elsewheres, the better. It’s easier to leave a sinking ship before it’s totally underwater, you know?

I know that for commercial artists, it might be a valuable market. But for everyone else, there is no real crucial reason. Yes there are a lot of people there. But if your friends won’t stay in touch with you if you leave a website, then I am sorry, but you are not in a real community. You are a bunch of barflies, and the bartender keeps spitting more and more in your drinks.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a clear cut replacement. I really wish it was as easy as “everyone go here, and it’ll be perfect!”. Nowhere is perfect. Honestly I’ve bounced off of mastodon, bluesky, and cohost myself, so maybe I don’t have a clear path forward at all. Even though, the sooner the fun furries get off of X, the sooner we will starve that crowd of jerks, and they’ll start biting each other for entertainment`.

If you really think you can’t leave, try just not reading or posting there for a week. Not as a protest, but as a way to check yourself, to see how you feel without it. I felt so, so much better.
