What the heck is a kemonomimi?

As you sit there, gazing at the member list and the crazy long name, I'm sure you're wondering what a kemonomimi is; or perhaps you're not, I'm not really all that good at reading minds. At any rate, let's pretend you are! Perhaps you are even saying to yourself, "aren't these people just nekomimis?" Firstly, nekomimi is already plural, so HA! Secondly, let me not be a crazy grammar nazi and explain. Nekomimi literally translates to cat ears. It refers to a character that is primarily human in appearance with cat traits integrated. Kemonomimi, however, is a much broader term. Kemonomimi literally translates to animal ears, and includes every human character with animal traits; so that means that a kemonomimi can have cat ears and a tail, but also raccoon, dog, rabbit, squirrel, chipmunk or anything else your mind can imagine! Isn't that a whole lot cuter and more special than a group just for cat eared people? We do love our nekos, but we're all about covering a wide target here!

Wait a minute, isn't that just a furry?

As some of the more Japanese subculture conscious or fandom aware may already know, there is a pre-existing fandom in Japan by this name. Some people argue that kemonomimi is just the Japanese equivalent of furry. Some people argue that the adored characters by said fandom are too human to be considered as such. Regardless of which side you take, we don't want to take an official stance on the issue. For the purpose of this group, we merely focus on characters and fursonas that are mostly human in appearance without any sort of alignment on that age old argument. Whether you consider yourself a furry, a kemonomimi, or a kemonomimi character in the furry fandom, you are welcome equally.

How do I join?

We are, at our core, a group for kemonomimi pride and for fans of we crazy eared humans. If you watch us you are a member, and we will definitely watch you back. We hope, in all good conscience, to favor excellent kemonomimi art that we come across and perhaps to post a piece or two donated by artists. Heck, we may even throw in a discussion journal or two; just don't judge us too harshly if we don't do a whole lot of that, it IS a pride group after all. How can we be expected to update this page every hour when we're so busy being cute and confusing the general furry population with our vastly human appearance!? It would also be super swell if you linked us on your profile!
