Why is uploading stories so hard?

I'm trying to upload a couple of stories to this site. I use microsoft word 2011, which uses a .docx format as its default. Apparantly FA doesn't support .docx, so I changed it to .doc.
It still doesn't work.
I change it to .rtf.
It still doesn't work.
I change it to txt.
Now it works, but it has replaced all my apostrophes with diamonds.
Am I doing something wrong?
