What happened to Pooka
13 years ago
To my family, friends, and other animals;
As some of you are aware, but most are not, I have been involved in a serious legal battle over the past 18 months. I have lost. I was sentenced to 210 months, 17 1/2 years in federal custody. Currently I am in Texas' illustrious FCI Beaumont Low Security prison, home of six former Louisiana senators. (I met O'Keefe, nice guy.)
I was forced to plead guilty to distribution of child pornography. I do not care to make explanations or justifications here, except to state that the courts and media do not acknowledge the difference between real correspondence and mutually consenting fictitious role-play between adults. So don't believe everything you Google about me. If you have questions you can ask me directly.
I have asked for this to be posted on my behalf so that my disappearance will be explained and loved ones will know how to contact me. I will also allay some concerns and curiosity.
Everyone has superstitions about prison, and the particular treatment given to sex offenders. The truth is that every facility is different, with very few generalities that apply everywhere. Here you can think high school TV drama for the level of violence, racism and abuse I have to deal with.
In recent years the federal government has cracked down on child pornography and "non-contact" crimes. The result is a rather significant number of sex offenders, and very few of us fit the stereotypes you might expect. The possible exception is the number of intellectuals. I have met many doctors, lawyers, professors, etc. As one recent acquaintance said "Once they started arresting people for thought crimes, prisons started getting a lot of people who would think."
Consequently, I am not the only furry here, sadly, far from it. I mention this because there are likely some in the community, some who will read this, who have done what I once did. I may be stating the obvious but I highly encourage those people to stop! All politics aside, the current laws are ridiculously unjust, and the enforcement of them is absurdly corrupt. If you are suspected of anything, they will lie, they will cheat, they will threaten your family with bogus legal action, and much worse to get a conviction regardless of evidence or truth. And they won't stop there.
I could have had five years taken off my sentence for giving just one name of just one person I suspected might have one questionable picture. Now, whether I have that information or not, I will always choose personal suffering over inflicting harm on another. But I hope my choices will encourage others to make better choices, I care for the well-being of all creatures and I do not ever want to have to see another furry in chains. Except, you know, recreationally.
Whether you are a passing friend or someone I have loved with all my essence, I would love very much to stay in contact with you. Postal mail is the preferred method, it might be read by the authorities but honestly they don't really do that except for the known crime kingpins and celebrities. I also have access to phones and email, which is only slightly less private. I hope to hear from you, but if not, I thank you for the memories and wish you a happily ever after. Stay furry my friends.
Light the world on fire,
-Pooka
