That guy with the giant camera | Registered: August 17, 2008 09:07:53 PM
Hey, I'm Protius.... you may know me as that guy with the giant camera. I do medium (6x6) and large (4x5) format photography, usually black and white, with a Hasselblad and a Crown Graphic. I also shoot video, and make holograms with my home-made holography setup.
After much effort building a film scanner, I've put my con films and videos up at http://www.bobdbob.com/~protius/con_films/ . Historically I have only shown my stuff at other cons, and not posted it on internet. I want people to be comfortable that when I take your picture it is not going to appear somewhere undesireable, and thats hard to do when its on the web. Unfortunately, people don't want to watch other cons at a con... so I've relaxed the criteria, but in hopes of keeping the files off comercial media I have put a password on it. The userid and passwd are "furry" and "papercliparm" respectively. To be pedantic, I'm giving that passwd to furries on FA, and /only/ furries on FA.
I have also put full resolution files of my con pictures at http://www.bobdbob.com/~protius/con_pictures/

Furthemore 2026
I am pondering doing my holography panel again at the next Furthemore.
The current advertisement is:
Bring an interesting object about the size of your fist (holograms are life-size), and we will walk you through arranging it in the holographic apparatus, exposing a piece of film, and then developing that film to make a white light viewable hologram of your object to take home and amaze your friends with.
The fine print: This is approximately a high school level physics lab, there will be lasers, film, chemistry (not especially toxic, but it sure stains), and darkness. I would not recommend it for very young children, or people in fursuits.
It will start with going over the process, safety, and pondering what order people will be in (draw a number from a hat, trade as desired). Then it is unfortunately a lot of waiting, a hologram takes 15 minutes, with one starting every 5 minutes (3 stage pipeline), but must be done one at a time, so the 10'th person will end up waiting for 50 minutes. People can come and go as it runs, between exposures.
I am looking for a second person to help out with the processing or drying/finishing stages of the pipeline. Anyone interested?
Or, does anyone have a better idea for how to implement the queue?
