Just a little idea that came into my head and I put into a little short story. Will probably continue it with a sequel later.
Hope you all like it.

A Surprise
“Owwww!” Ashley held his hands on his raised shin, wincing as pain shot up his leg as he lay on the ground. It took a moment for the pain to subside and he rubbed his shin with his hand as the pain started to dull to a faint throbbing.
“The heck was that?!” He yelled out to the world in general as he looked around for what had taken his leg out from under him. What he saw made his eyes go wide, an egg. He rested his leg on the ground, glad that it wasn’t a break, and looked at the egg more closely.
It was pretty big, he wasn’t sure what bird or lizard could have laid it. It was pure white and seemed to be intact despite having hit him and the ground. He looked around for where it came from but didn’t see anything.
“Now where did you come from?” He mused as he looked around, frowning a little. Still there was nothing around that he could see so he got up to his feet, wincing from the pain in his leg as he put his weight on it. He limped over to the egg, looked it over again before he picked it up with both hands. It was roughly the size of a small dog, perhaps a little bigger.
“What are you?” He thought out loud, still he didn’t see a nest around and wondered if the egg could have rolled down from the hill. He started to limp up the fairly steep, grass covered hill, carrying the egg under one arm.
However once he reached the top there was no sign of a nest or anything else and he frowned.
“Maybe I should take you back home and figure out what laid you…” He muttered as he started back down the hill and towards the single house in the area. He lived on his own on a farm in the middle of nowhere, well practically. He was a good 20 minutes drive from the nearest city, not that he minded. He had been taking a walk in one of the fields before being knocked down by the mysterious egg.
He arrived back in his house and he started up the computer he had there and placed the egg down on a blanket. He figured he should keep it warm or something, if there was still something growing inside he didn’t want to be the cause of its death, whatever it was.
He sat down at the computer and started to search online for any species that matched the description for the egg. Still he didn’t find anything, it was too big for any bird and apparently there were no lizards capable of laying it in his area.
He frowned as he sat back in the chair, massaging the bridge of his nose. Well according to what he could find this egg shouldn’t exist. Maybe it was someone’s idea of a joke? Probably not, the egg looked real and didn’t feel like it had been put together or anything. It sure as heck hurt when it hit his leg.
“I suppose I’m gonna have to hatch you and find out then.” He muttered, none too thrilled at that prospect. Sure he was used to looking after animals, farm animals like cows and horses. Usually if he saw a lizard around he chased them off!
Still he looked back to his computer and started to research what he would need to do in order to hatch the egg. It took a while but he eventually put together a small environment for the egg with a heat lamp and blanket. With that done he left to go take care of the other animals he kept in the farm.
He came back several hours later to check on the egg, not that he expected anything to have happened. Still as he walked over he checked it and could have sworn he saw movement. He sighed, figuring he was just seeing things.
“Must be more tired then I thought…” He mumbled to himself as he walked to the kitchen to make himself a sandwich. After a few minutes he heard what he thought was movement and he looked back into the living room and spotted the egg actually shaking.
“What the…” He muttered as he walked over, a single crack forming in the egg.
“Whoa that was fast!” He practically yelled as he went and got a noose and several blankets just in case it was from one the lizards that sometimes prowl around.
By the time he got back several more cracks had formed in the egg and he stood ready, as ready as he could be, to face whatever hatched. For now he just watched though something finally pushed out from inside the egg and it was rather scaled to say the least.
What he saw was a…muzzle he supposed of some kind of lizard, eyes still closed and it let out some kind of squeak. He very carefully lifted a piece of the egg from its head and inspected it carefully. He still wasn’t sure what lizard this was, it certainly wasn’t any species he was familiar with.
As the rest of the egg was broken by its feet he got his first good look at the creature. He was pretty shocked to say the least. It was scaled and definitely looked like a lizard but on its back were a pair of wings, quite large for it’s size. On the back of its head were two tiny horns pointing backwards and on its toes were quite sharp looking claws or talons. Its tail was laid out behind it with a pyramid shaped…spike?...on the end. Its scales were a deep shade of orange changing to yellow under its chin, down it’s chest and stomach and the underside of it’s tail.
It opened its green, slitted eyes and looked up at him from its position of lying down on its stomach. As it did his own eyes opened wide as he realized what it was, or what it looked like anyway and he couldn’t believe it.
“You gotta be kidding…” He said out loud, there was no way this was possible! It had to be a dream!
“You can’t be a dragon!” He practically yelled as it looked up at him and he could have sworn it was smiling. Then again it could have been his mind playing tricks on him.
There was no way it could be a real life, living dragon, it was just impossible! They were myths! They had to be…yet here it was, laying in front of him.
As it started to struggle up onto its clawed feet he was brought back to reality and he watched it very carefully. Still it seemed to be struggling and he very cautiously helped it up onto its feet. It seemed rather wobbly on its legs as it looked around, wincing as it looked directly up at the heat lamp, blinking its eyes before looking back to him.
It squeaked before taking a first, tentative step towards him. He had to admit he practically flinched as it did though he realized it wasn’t going to attack him. He just sat down next to the table it was on and watched it carefully as it wobbled a little as he tried to walk towards him. As it did he very, very cautiously, his hand was shaking a little, petted it.
The Dragon seemed to squeak and leaned against his hand a bit. He raised his eyebrows at that, kinda surprised that it would like that though he figured most creatures did. Still he really had to wonder what he was going to do with it. He couldn’t exactly toss it out into the wild, sure he knew of legends about Dragons being vicious and powerful beasts but looking at the little Dragon he had a hard time believing those stories.
He was brought out of his thoughts as he caught the hatchling nibbling at the table and he frowned.
“Hey! Stop that!” He practically yelled at it and the Dragon whimpered and backed away as if he had struck it. He kinda felt bad and he figured it was hungry.
“Alright…stay there.” He told it though he doubted it understood him. He stood up and walked to the kitchen and taking out some ham he walked back to the little Dragon, who had walked to the edge of the table and was looking down over the edge.
“Careful there.” He told it as he walked back over though it seemed to smell the ham and practically jumped on him as he sat down.
“Whoa! Hey!” He called out in surprise and a little fear as it climbed up his shirt using its little claws. Interestingly enough it didn’t actually claw his skin though he saw it looking very intently at the ham. He broke off a small piece and held it in front of it and it happily took a huge bite out of the ham, practically tearing it from between his fingers, and gulped it down.
“Hungry little guy aren’t you?” He chuckled nervously as he fed it another piece of ham which it happily and pretty quickly devoured. After several pieces the Dragon seemed to be full and climbed up his shirt, leaving holes in it from its claws. It made its way up to his face and nuzzled his cheek, well he figured that’s what it was doing. He figured it was its way of showing affection and he petted its head and neck.
“I guess I’m going to have to come up with a name for you huh…”
Hope you all like it.
