Sometimes, it's not so much "dark and light." Sometimes, it's "gentle and aggressive." Maybe there's a dichotomy within a dichotomy there. Diplomacy (associated with the "gentle" side) is the way to go when dealing with potential allies, but it's the wrong approach when dealing with violent enemies (defeatism being an example of the "dark side" of an otherwise diplomatic mindset). I often use Eisenhower as an example because he fought when it was time to fight, but preferred diplomacy when it was viable.
In Trigun terms, I characterize it as finding balance between Vash's idealism and Wolfwood's realism.
