I've been thinking a lot abt him since he's described as a priest and I feel like with what I know about the properties of opal, he's very much a leader/mentor type figure in his community of Mythiri. He's very stern and serious but always plays a warm mediator and tries to resolve conflicts.
Since opals also have healing/protective properties, I feel like he is often sought out for blessings (in the form of his opals) for quick recovery or to ward of danger or evil.
Something like that.
Also his name is Spina Upalus. Often just called Father Upalus by his hive.
