That wasn't ever really confirmed by Nintendo, though. All we have to go on for that theory is old cover art and fan speculation. With all of the redesigns the Star Fox crew has had up until now, if their legs really were amputated they could very easily design really interesting cybernetics for them. They never did though. Sure they could simply be hidden underneath their clothing and boots for show but I honestly doubt it. If it was actually a thing at any point, I'm sure it was retconned. But still, that is not officially confirmed. At the end of the day it is a rumor that you will not find confirmed on an official Nintendo site about Star Fox by any of the creators and Star Fox 64 did, indeed, retcon a bunch of things from the original Star Fox and cancelled Star Fox 2 game.

Know what this might mean?
Either A. Nintendo wasn't thinking of how many arguments would eventually happen, when they designed the boots (more likely)
Or...
B. The Starfox characters ARE amputees, BUT since they are futuristic and advanced enough for voluntary amputation, they are futuristic and advanced enough for LIMBS THAT REGROW AT WILL!!

It doesn't hurt my feelings, I just noticed a detail is all. Looking up a wiki article could have resolved this near instantly. The issue is about a defining detail to the character, though. It's the equivalent of someone taking your character, drawing the fur bright orange and then having others shrugging it off as "It's just furry porn so it doesn't matter, still the same character". Again I'm not taking this too seriously, it's just a note that I instantly saw when I looked at the piece where the legs were wrong.
At least it's not canon from StarFox Adventures onward. In SSBB. Falco's Boot texture reads "FalcoBoots001." There, straight from the developers. Now if it still were canon, I wouldn't follow it, because that theory kills my childhood just as much as my Falco artwork kills most peoples' childhoods.

I apologize, I just saw this and got skeptical for a second, thinking you might have just colored it or something, but when I compared it to some works of other people who could have drawn it, I did notice fine details eliminating the options, and I can't really find artwork of a zerosuit wearing Fox or Falco (male at least) elsewhere, so I now feel certain you made this all on your own.
I'm sorry, I've been in the fandom for long, met people of various kinds, so now I try to keep an eye open for who's really responsible for a picture, but I now see that this is truly yours alone! Sorry if this sounds like an insult, it was really not intended as one!!!
