It was cool and all, but it still bothered me. Mostly because it wasn't really established, so it seems it was a deus ex machina that was shrugged off as the power of friendship or something

Unless I missed something... (Hope this post isn't too spoiler...ish)

Well, Hiccup's mother did point out that every dragon has it's secrets and showed him how to access Toothless' back scales, so this is probably just one of those things neither of them knew about because Toothless never needed to use that much power before.

I guess he was exerting power he hadn't had to use until that point? In the first movie he did fight off the monstrous nightmare for the cause of defending Hiccup but all he had to do was scuff it up a little, and the Red Death was beyond reasoning and was only indirectly influencing behavior, so..

Still felt it should have been explained or at least foreshadowed better that with a cheap "you don't know everything" line, as that's always true.

A brief mention, short legend, or even a throwaway line of something similar happening, withholding details. Rampaging beast was actually just desperate mother protecting/avenging young or something.

Perhaps make some loose connection to the effect of Eel Pox on dragons, and that Toothless is either purposefully experiencing it or forcing a similar chemical imbalance in himself.

Right now, it kinda feels like someone said, "the Night Fury isn't cool enough, let's make it a Saiyan." and instead of explaining it, just said, "You'll never guess what we decided it can do now"

Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed the movie. This being my biggest criticism, I feel like I'm nitpicking. Feeling only slightly more justified than someone just saying Toothless is OP.

*Clings Alpha Toothless* *Squeals* The movie was awesome, and I can't wait for it to come out on DVD so I can own it and watch it a couple hundred times, not even kidding about that number... (I watched HTTYD a couple hundred times and still love it to death, lmao)

Maybe after some time, I'll be able to watch the people instead of noticing all the dragons and stuff going on in the background.

I watched HTTYD2 in IMAX 3D on June 13 and it was amazing
