Def use wires, you can use a wire hanger from your local store or you can just use fabric for the trunk if you're going to have it point downwards.
Personally, for more character personality, I'd make the trunk look like an "s" shape like this http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped.....ised_trunk.jpg that way the foam will just flop and morph.
