I only have the Hair plugin that was included with Max 8 which is totally impractical for rendering that many tiny hairs, and I would assume there aren't any plugins available for my Older version of Max, so haven't considered trying to do anything about it. However, I suppose the edges are the biggest giveaway, so I experimented with a multiple layer shell and transparency maps applied to the edges via falloff and it seems to be doing a good job of at least breaking and softening the edges.
Using the fall off map in a blended material to add a soft edge to the silhouette is a brilliant way to implement the Fin & Shell sor fur, is brilliant. I might suggest using a contrast manipulated AO Bake map, with her clothes on, to keep the "fur" from clipping through the fabric. Put it in a step before the Fall off mask. I love the way you can nest materials and steps in 3ds Max. (Even the old versions fo max could do this)
