Nope, those are eyes and he can actually see with them. Not very good as they don't work when there's no light available (so no, he can't see his own insides when retracting the tongue) and he can't see colors with it... still, he sees just fine enough with those eyes to aim his tongue at something and hit the chosen target with a high percentage.

In lupus form, he likes to play "catch the rat" with packmates: Somone tosses a rat and Was snatches it out of the air while he's sitting, using only his tongue XD
