I'm not sure if Maya has a skin modifier, but it would help if you used that. It pretty much takes bones and forms skin around them and you can modify the shapes. It would look much smoother and more organic. Otherwise, I'd try modifying the normals for better lighting. I don't know much about modelling, I only have a handle on level design, so I can't give much critique here. Good luck mate!
