I've only read the mangas, and watched like 2 episodes? Was hard to get into the anime after reading most of the manga so far. But yeah Togashi can makes some great characters.

you should try it again!!! both versions r rly good i think, but i prefer 99' for the first arc of the series. 2011 was rly good tho, tho it had its flaws. i need to read the manga sometime tho, i havent actually.. done so...
